Phyllis R. Harstad, 90, died on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 20, at West Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hancock. Interment was in the West Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Arrangements were with Zniewski Funeral Home.
Phyllis Regina (Schliep) Harstad was born on April 28, 1927, in Fairfield Township, Swift County, the daughter of Christ Albert and Augusta Catherine (Thielke) Schliep. She was baptized at home by the Rev. C.W. Ristow on July 31, 1927. She was confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson by the Rev. R. P. Albrecht on April 2, 1944.
Phyllis grew up in Hegbert Township, Swift County, until her family moved to Clontarf in 1939. She attended District #35 Swift County, Clontarf School and graduated in 1944 from Benson High School. On May 3, 1946, Phyllis was united in marriage to Oliver Harstad by the Rev. Erwin Vaudt at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with more than 54 years of marriage, three children, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Phyllis worked as a waitress in Benson, and then at Northway Grocery from 1963 to 1971, and Wigfield’s Department Store from 1971 to 1989. She was the clerk of Hoff Township, Pope County, in 1974. Phyllis was a member of West Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and fishing.
She was called from this life on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. She attained 90 years, 5 months and 10 days of age.
