Minnewaska softball absorbs first loss
Montevideo 3 Minnewaska 2
After having their home game postponed by wet, cold weather on Monday, the Lakersí softball team was in Montevideo on Tuesday for a WCC matchup against the Thunderhawks.
The game was scoreless until Minnewaska pushed across two runs in the fourth inning. The big hit was a single by rightfielder Kaitlyn Lange that drove in two runs as Carley and Bailey Stewart crossed home plate. Both Stewarts had reached base on walks.
Minnewaska starting pitcher Morgan Hess was cruising as the game headed into the bottom of the sixth inning. Hess had surrendered just two hits and had retired 12 straight batters as Montevideo came to bat in the sixth.
A Minnewaska error with two outs kept the sixth inning alive for the Thunderhawks and allowed a run to score. A following two-out single drove in another to tie the game, 2-2.
The Lakers loaded the bases on an error and two walks in the top of the seventh inning, but a pop-out on the infield ended the threat.
Two walks and an error loaded the bases for Montevideo in the bottom of the seventh, and only one out. A line drive at Hess eluded the Lakers hurler, allowing the winning run to cross the plate.
The loss was the first of the year for Minnewaska following four wins to begin the season.
The Lakers have a busy week ahead but wonít have to get on a bus for any of the games. Minnewaska plays at home on Monday against BOLD, followed by a doubleheader at home on Tuesday against ACGC and a Thursday matchup with Sauk Centre at the MAHS softball complex.
