Lakers baseball drops a close one on the road
BOLD 2 Minnewaska 1
The Minnewaska baseball team was on the road Tuesday, taking on BOLD in a West Central Conference game. The Lakers had been scheduled to play on Monday against NL-S, but the game was postponed due to poor weather.
The Warriors entered the game with a 2-0 record, not only shutting out both opponents but only surrendering one hit in both games, combined.
Minnewaska was able to score the first run of the year against Warrior pitching in the first inning. Connor Westberg led off the game with a single. A stolen base and advancing on an out allowed Westberg to get to third base, where he was driven home on a sacrifice fly by Matt Gruber.
Minnewaska starting pitcher Colin Richards was able to hold the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Warriors pushed across a run to tie the score.
With the score tied at one, Richards was lifted with two outs in the fifth inning. Shawn Stumpf took over and kept BOLD scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings.
The Lakers were having no luck scoring off of BOLD pitcher Reed Stadther, and the game went into the seventh inning tied, 1-1.
BOLD came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning and was able to drive home the winning run with a two-out single, giving the Warriors an exciting 2-1 victory.
The win pushed BOLD to 3-0 on the season. The loss was the first of the season for the Lakers, who are now 1-1 heading into the upcoming week. Minnewaska will play three conference games. First up is a road trip to play a doubleheader at ACGC on Tuesday, followed by a home game against Montevideo on Thursday.
