Care Providers of Minnesota announced today that Dave and Barb Ask, volunteers at Glenwood Estates, were presented with the Volunteer of the Year award at a statewide senior care convention held earlier this month in Minneapolis.
The Volunteer of the Year award honors those who have made contributions to the quality of life for residents or to the working environment for staff at a senior care facility.
Dave and Barb have been volunteering at Glenwood Estates for more than two years. They volunteer on average four days a week for many different activities. On Sundays, they lead a church service for residents who are not able to leave the facility to attend worship. Other days Dave leads bingo, while Barb plays the piano for sing-a-longs and social hours, and a host of other activities.
The joy that Dave and Barb bring to Glenwood Estates goes far beyond performing activities. Dave and Barb are considered family by certain residents, whose actual relatives live too far to visit often. In turn, they have become more than volunteers, as Dave and Barb frequently join Glenwood Estates for holiday meals and gatherings. They are always full of joy, a shoulder to lean on, and a voice of reason when residents and even staff are going through a hard time.
“We feel so blessed to have Dave and Barb here at Glenwood,” commented Joycelin Steidl, Housing Manager at Glenwood Estates. “They are such great people and give so much of their time to the residents and take a genuine interest in the lives of everyone here at Glenwood Estates.”
Dave and Barb were presented with their awards during the opening keynote session, which was part of the three-day educational convention for long-term care providers. Presenting the award was Patti Cullen, president and CEO of Care Providers of Minnesota; and Sharon St. Mary, Board of Directors Chair, Care Providers of Minnesota.
