The Minnewaska wrestling team took part in a quadrangular in Morris on Thursday. In the opening match the Lakers downed Benson. The match against MAHACA was not wrestled.
In his match at 126 pounds, sophomore Easton McCrory’s win was the 75th of his career. Congratulations, Easton!
ACGC 34 Minnewaska 28
In the second match on Thursday in Morris the Lakers took on ACGC, the #2 ranked team in Class A. The Falcons downed the #3 ranked Lakers in a close, exciting match, 34-28.
ACGC jumped out to a 26-0 lead after winning the first six matches. Decisions by Mason Blair, Max Reichmann and Nathan Rankin, along with pins from Ryan VanLuik, Tyson Meyer and Tyler VanLuik, pulled the Lakers to within two points with one match left. ACGC won the final match and took the victory.
January 11 @ Minnewaska Invitational
On Saturday the Minnewaska wrestling team hosted their own 10-team invitational. The Lakers racked up six first place finishes and won the team title by a nice margin over second place Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus.
Jacob Blair, Mason Blair, Tyson Meyer, Tyler VanLuik, Dylan Jergenson and Jakob Swalla all took first place. Three Lakers, Easton McCrory, Max Reichmann and Ryan VanLuik all took second place.
Jacob Blair took an 8-2 decision to win the 120 pound division. Mason Blair was fired up after taking a 9-4 decision to win at 145 pounds. Tyson Meyer put on a wrestling clinic in winning an 8-2 decision over a very good wrestler at 182 pounds. Tyler VanLuik made quick work of his opponent with an early second period pin to take the 195 pound division. Likewise, Dylan Jergenson’s second period pin led him to a title at 220 pounds. In the final match of the tournament, Jakob Swalla took an entertaining 8-7 win to win the 285 pound division. Swalla trailed by a point early in the third period. A take down gave Swalla the lead and he held his opponent in check over the final half of the period to get the win.
