September 8 @ Minnewaska

Minnewaska Golf Course was the setting for the Minnewaska Invitational cross country meet on Wednesday afternoon. Sunny skies, a nice breeze, comfortable temperatures and a well-manicured course greeted the runners and fans that were in attendance.

The girls’ varsity followed the last of the junior high and JV races. The other four teams in the field also sported solid teams, as the final scores would indicate.

Minnewaska’s Olivia Danielson was setting the pace for the Lakers after about 1/3 of the race had been run. At that point she was in fourth place. Danielson had moved into second place after about 2/3 of the race, but trailed the leader by about 30 yards. Danielson overtook Kyanna Burton of Staples-Motley over the final 1/3 of the race. Burton put on a strong kick over the final 50 yards but came up just short as Danielson won by a scant .07 of a second.

The win by Danielson would turn out to be the difference in the match. The Lakers won by one point, the difference between first and second place.

Lauren Ankeny and Sydnie Chevalier finished in the top 10, taking sixth and seventh places respectively.

The boys’ team finished fourth in the five-team field. West Central Area fielded a strong team and took first place.

Minnewaska’s Maeson Tank had the top finish for the Lakers, taking 11th place.

Every runner for the Lakers improved significantly over their times the previous week in Morris.

“Our boys ran exceptionally well, placing fourth against two of the top teams in our section in West Central and Staples, as well as Redwood Valley, a team with a powerhouse program. It was a huge feat for our team,” said head coach Jennifer Johnsrud. “I look for our boys’ team to continue to improve and be quite competitive by post season.”
