Benson 8 Minnewaska 7  Game 1

The Minnewaska softball team was in Benson on a chilly Monday afternoon to play a doubleheader against the Braves.

The Lakers scored in each of the first four innings, building a 6-0 lead, only to see their advantage evaporate in the bottom of the fourth inning. Benson scored six times to knot the game at 6-6.

It looked like the Lakers were going to get out of the bottom of the sixth inning with the game still tied, but with two outs a pair of wild pitches with runners on base allowed the Braves to score twice and take an 8-6 lead.

Minnewaska was able to get one run across in the top of the seventh inning,  but they couldn’t get the big hit to tie the game.

Minnewaska 13 Benson 6  Game 2

Batting as the home team in game two of the doubleheader Minnewaska scored three times in their first at bat to offset the solo run pushed across by the Braves to start the game.

After four innings of play the Lakers again had a nice lead, this time 6-2. Benson scored twice in the fifth and two more times in the sixth to get within one run.

With the tying run on base and no one out in the top of the sixth, Grace Larson gunned out a runner attempting to steal second base. Now, with no runners on base and one out, the Lakers were able to settle down and finish out the inning with the lead.

Minnewaska put away any doubt of their first win by scoring six times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 13-6 lead with one inning to play.

Starting pitcher Brenna Larson tossed a scoreless seventh inning and made the final out of the game on a diving catch of a short pop up.

Minnewaska had their first victory of the year thanks to some good power hitting. The Lakers ripped four doubles and two triples among their 10 total hits to back the pitching of Larson.

Maddy Meulebroeck had a huge game at the plate, going 3-4 with a double and triple, scoring twice and driving in three runs.
