The Christ Brenden dwelling house, when completed, would be one of the most modern structures in this vicinity, Larson Bros. are doing the work.

Olga Finstad entertained the 8th grade class at a party. All report an enjoyable evening.

The morning train last Friday was pretty crowded with graduates and friends going to Glenwood to attend the 8th grade commencement exercises.

100 YEARS AGO

From June 2, 1922

The board of directors of the Minnewaska Hospital Clinic met at the bank last Saturday, O.N. Stomseth, president, presiding. It was decided to buy property from P.P. Kleven and Simon Kolstad for the site for the building, which would be 28 x 50 feet with a 10-foot ceiling, full basement, and would have six office rooms, a waiting room, X-ray room and a dark room with lavatories in the basement. Larson Brothers were awarded the contract and work would commence immediately.

Miss Inga Grinager, who had been Supt. of the Minnewaska hospital for two years, had resigned her position to take effect as soon as the matter of a successor had been selected.

Dr. W.W. Larson delivered the Memorial Day address at Herman Tuesday. Dr. Larson, who was the seventh District Commander of the American Legion, was acquiring a considerable reputation as a public speaker and was being called on quite often to make speeches in various parts of the district.

Miss Charlotte Buesing was the valedictorian and Miss Margaret Quammen the salutatorian of the Cyrus Senior Class this year.

The following seniors received their diplomas at the high school graduation exercises: Helen Aune, Hazel Aronson, Torbin Brenden, Carlton Brevig, Frances Erickson, Alma Gorder, Ernest Gorder, Florence Hagen, Harriet Hagestuen, Howard W. Jorgenson, Herbert Kirkwold, Clara Kjanaas, Russell Knutson, Elvera Mickelson, Louise Nali, Arthur E. Nordberg, Franklin Noyes, Mable Nelson, Melvin Olmein, Reuben Olmein, Arnold Opdahl, George Pederson, Cora Pederson, Calvin Pederson, Olive Runquist, Myrtle Runquist, Myrtle Skaaden, Ovid Smedstad, Ralph Swenson, Inez Sylvester, Kermit Wollan.

Dr. A.I. Arneson moved his office equipment to Morris on Monday. His new office was over the Vinji clothing store. The Arneson family would continue to make their home in Starbuck for the summer at least.

A recital was given last Thursday evening by the pupils of Miss Astrid Flack. The following young people took part: Violin – Gordon Moe, Clara Voigt, Edith Anderson, Eldred Nelson, Ruth Arneson, Margaret Larson, Joy Nelson, Ebba Swenson and Helen Hustad; Piano – Geneva Larson and Gladys Nelson.

The Starbuck Community Band, under the direction of M. Casper Johnshoy, would open their outdoor concert season at the Lakeshore Park on Monday, June 6.

80 YEARS AGO

From June 4, 1942

The rainfall for Starbuck for May breaks all former May records. The total rainfall – 7.44 inches, according to the weather report submitted by P.P. Klevann, official weatherman for this territory.

Summer instrumental instruction in music offered by Starbuck Public Schools  would be open to grade and high school pupils and also to those who would enter school in the fall. R.S. Forde, instructor. 

The troops of the Triangle District gathered near the Lakeshore Park last Monday and Tuesday for the annual camporee. Glenwood, Morris, Benson, Kerkhoven and Starbuck had troops represented. Altogether 60 boys had an overnight camping experience.

From June 5, 1952

The following from Starbuck received Bachelor of Arts degrees at Luther College: Helen Hanson, Lyle Hanson, Howard Olson, Paul Ranum and Donald Rem.

E.C. Landaas would leave June 11 for New York and on the “Stavangerfjord” for Oslo Norway, where he would visit relatives for three months.

60 YEARS AGO

From May 31, 1962

The annual Pope County 4-H Field Day will be held this Saturday, June 2 in Starbuck, sponsored by the Starbuck Chamber of Commerce. Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. At 1:30 p.m. the big parade will start with the Starbuck Band, under the directions of Joe Fennie, taking the lead. There are a total of twenty clubs in Pope County, with a membership of around four hundred and sixty who will compete for the awards, plaques and trophies.

Mrs. Astrid Forde would present her pupils in two recitals during the next week. The following would take part: Victoria Behl, David, Marcus and Joan Baukol, Linda Dahlseng, Dorothy Hagestuen, Bonnie Klevann, Kathryn and Karolyn Lee, Helen and Sylvia Odegaard, Elaine and Margaret Opdaul, Steven, Linda, and Darlene Otteson, Mary Roiland, La Vonne Svenning, Susan Smedstad, Priscilla Thorstad, Ruth Tollefson, Carolyn Tolo, Judy, Kathleen and Mary Ann Teigen.

50 YEARS AGO

From June 1, 1972

Fifty-four seniors received their diplomas at graduation exercises at the Starbuck High School. Instead of the usual commencement speaker, four honor students gave short addresses. They were Laurel Knutson, Sandra Samuelson, Sandra Husta and Linda Schultz.

Arthur Finstad, Livestock Inspector with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture at Starbuck, Minn., recently received a certificate of successful completion of the Technical Development School held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

40 YEARS AGO

June food specials: Red Baron pizza, $2.99; Kemp’s vanilla or New York vanilla ice cream, 5 qt. pail, $2.89; carrots, 2 lb. bag, 59¢; broccoli, 69¢ per lb.; Gerber chunky baby food, 2 for 95¢; Rice a Roni, all varieties, 69¢; Hellman’s salad dressing, $1.09; Hunt’s tomato sauce, 15 oz. 55¢; Nabisco Oreos, 19 oz., $1.69; Creamette italian spaghetti noodles, 2 lb. family size, $1.29.

Appointment of Thomas H. Beuckens as Postmaster at Starbuck, MN, effective June 12, 1982, was announced by Paul N. Carlin, Regional Postmaster General for the 13-state Central Region. Mr. Beuckens began his career in the Postal Service in 1974 in Starbuck. He has also worked in the offices in Lowry, Glenwood, St. Cloud, Cyrus and Morris.

Seventeen graduates would receive their diplomas at the Cyrus High School on June 4. The Cyrus concert band would play the processional and recessional. Four honor students of the graduating class, Michael Carbert, Dan Cowger, Karla Engebretson, and Laurie Larson, would be the speakers for the evening.

A solemn and stirring ceremony was held at the Starbuck Lakeshore Park in honor of Memorial Day. Tribute was paid to all of the men and women who had given their lives during the wars that the United States had been involved in. An honor guard from the Starbuck firing squad fired three volleys to make the occasion. Wreathers were placed on a cross and cast on the waters of Lake Minnewaska to honor those who perished by land and by sea.

30 YEARS AGO

The chimes of the tower clock at Minnewaska Lutheran Home were working again after several months of silence. The tower clock had been donated to the home in the early ‘60s by Bill Torguson of Starbuck.

The first-ever graduation ceremonies at the Minnewaska Area High School were held last Sunday afternoon before a near capacity crowd. The weather cooperated as the temperatures remained in the upper 70’s, along with a cool breeze and no rain. Erin Elliot, with a perfect 4.0 GPA was named valedictorian and Gregory Nelson was the salutatorian with a 3.98 GPA.

At their regular monthly meeting, the Minnewaska District Hospital Board of Directors, the Board heard Chief of the Medical Staff, Dr. Robert Bösl give an update of the urgency for the two entities to work harder to recruit at least two more family practitioners.

Starbuck Skate Park would soon be located on the waterfront, just south of the softball field, in the city park. The skate equipment was being custom made by True Ride in Duluth.
