The Minnewaska boys’ tennis team has set the bar high for future Laker teams to try and match. In their first state tournament in school history the boys’ team played very well, winning one match while losing two matches by the slimmest of margins.

In singles’ play Tate Reichmann went further into the tournament than any individual Laker, reaching the semifinals before eventually coming in fourth place.

Rock Ridge 4 Minnewaska 3

In the opening match for the Lakers at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis on Tuesday morning, Minnewaska faced Rock Ridge High School of Virginia.

Tate Reichmann won in a tough match at #1 singles, the only singles win for Minnewaska.

Nik VanDyke and Damon Uhde won in straight sets at #1 doubles, while Noah Palmer and Alec Larson bounced back from a first set loss to win their match at #3 doubles.

Two of the four matches the Lakers lost went to three sets, so Minnewaska was close to winning.

In the consolation bracket match later in the day on Tuesday, Minnewaska went up against Luverne.

The Lakers won the match, 6-1, with Ethan Quelle and Konner Hanson winning at #3 and #4 singles in three sets. Minnewaska’s other four wins were in straight sets, setting up a match on Wednesday for the fifth place match.

June 8 at Minneapolis

Litchfield 4 Minnewaska 3

The consolation title match pitted Minnewaska against Litchfield. The Dragons had lost their first match against St. Paul Academy, the eventual state champs, before defeating Foley to advance to the fifth place match.

As in their match against Rock Ridge, the Lakers were only able to get one win at singles, with Tate Reichmann taking a two-set victory.

The Lakers were able to get a three-set win from Nik VanDyke and Damon Uhde at #1 doubles, while the #2 doubles team of Connor Quelle and Tenzin Dahl won fairly easily, 6-1, 6-4.

The match came down to the #3 doubles teams, which went three sets. The Dragons won the tie-breaker set, 10-8, with a close call near the end helping Litchfield to a 4-3 win.

Tate Reichmann state tournament Tate Reichmann qualified for the state tournament as an individual based on his second-place finish in the section tournament.  

On Thursday morning Reichmann began his journey at state, taking on Kai Sih of St. Paul Academy. Reichmann took a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set win to advance to round two.

Reichmann faced Jared Delich of Rock Ridge. The two had met in the first round of the team tournament, a match won by the Minnewaska senior, 7-6, 10-8. The individual match also went to Reichmann, who won with a 6-1, 7-5 decision. 

The semifinal matches took place on Friday morning, with Tate Reichmann matched up against Evan Fraser of Mound Park Academy. Fraser was the #2 seed and would go on to win the state title after slipping past Reichmann, 6-2, 7-6, 6-1 in the semifinal.

In the third place match later in the day on Friday, Reichmann took on the #1 seed, Marian Veldic, of Rochester Lourdes.

Reichmann won the second set to forse a tie-breaker, which Veldic won, 10-7.

It was the best individual performance by a Minnewaska boys’ tennis player in school history. And by placing fourth at state, Tate kept alive the string of Minnewaska athletes (including doubles and relays) that have placed in the top four at state, extending back to the 2001-2002 school year.
