Henry Nelson and Alma Rust were married one day last week. A wedding reception was tendered them at Syver Syverson’s home Saturday night. 

Herman Engebretson goes soon to take a position in a bank in the town of Drake, N.D.

J.O. Nelson was in Starbuck yesterday and made a few calls between trains. 

The directors of the White Bear Telephone Co. met at the Power House Friday, Oct. 18. It was decided by the directors to put on one more girl operator and have 24 hour central service including Sundays and Holidays. 

100 YEARS AGO

From October 5, 1922

Last Sunday, on their Golden Wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Tranae were honored at the Arthur Ranum home in White Bear Lake where some three hundred of their friends gathered to help them celebrate the event. Mr. and Mrs. Tranae were both born in Norway, married there, and lived there until 1889, when they came to America. Three sons and one daughter died while they were in Norway. 

Items of interest from the High School news: Thursday, Sept. 28, a program was given in honor of Frances Willard who was the national leader of the W.C.T.U. The law passed by the legislature of Minnesota regarding the observance of Frances Willard Day in all public schools was read by Otto Nordstrom. Harriet Kirkwold read the story of her life. Helen Nordberg gave us five pictures of Frances Willard as a child, and an article showing one of the good effects of prohibition was ready by Verna Erickson.

Construction of a combination print shop and residence, in which the “Times” will be housed in the future, has begun. Elmer Erickson and his assistants, John and Benard Erickson , are doing the carpenter work, and John Larson is making the window and door frames. Bill Hancock of Morris is laying the tile.

Miss Myrtle Smedstad and Joseph M. Kleber were united in marriage at St. Cloud on Saturday, Oct. 8th, Rev. Bernard J. Wedenhorg performed the ceremony. The young couple will make their home in Cold Spring, Minn. The Times joins with their many friends in wishing them happiness and success. 

The A.N. Thorstad store will sponsor an Aladdin program at the town hall next Saturday evening, Oct. 15th. A short program consisting of piano solos by Paul Johnshoy, Ruby Hanson, Eldred Nelson and Harriet Thorstad, songs by LuVerne Thorstad, and Tracy Ann Thorstad and music by the Young People’s Orchestra. 

The members of the Magnus Grondahl Post held a business meeting last Wednesday evening and the following were elected to serve the Post during the coming year: Commander – Supt. W.A. Peterson; first vice commander  Arnold Dullem; second vice commander – Tom Thompson; adjutant – A.T. Sanvik; treasurer – J.A. Billehaus; chaplin – Oscar Frisel; sgt. at arms- Oscar Thompson; historian and service officers – Dr. W.W. Larson; employment officer – Gilman Heegard; child welfare – Oscar Olson; membership – W.J. Peterson.

The Bucks got back on the victory trial last Friday by defeating Ashby 13-0. Ernie Ranum again looked good, especially on defense while Ellsworth Thompson’s and Chet Olson’s blocking led directly to the scoring. Little Ted Ross showed again his generalship at quarterback and fine tackling.

Men from Starbuck to be inducted October 14 are: Glen Jenson, Elvin H.L. Nordaune, James M. Johnson, Melvin C.R. Edmunds, Odell C. Ronnie, Henry Brostad, Eli Christianson and Johannes B. Bustad.

Miss Esther Lenora Berg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Berg and Samuel Olson of Spain, S.D. were married October 4th at Bethany Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in Minneapolis.

Fron congregation and friends honored Pastor and Mrs. Oscar Rem on Sunday afternoon, by celebrating their silver wedding anniversary at Fron church parlors. 

Miss Mary Anderson 73, died unexpectedly at the Minnewaska hospital Tuesday afternoon . 

Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Nygaard were guests of honor at the Indherred church parlors last Sunday afternoon on their 25th wedding anniversary. 

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Berge the past week at the Minnewaska hospital. 

A blustery snowstorm hit the area Sunday evening, but the flakes did not register on the ground. The first killing frost was on Saturday, when the mercury dropped to 18º above zero.

Since the area was hit by a hard frost Sept. 20 , temperatures have continued much below normal. Sept. was the coolest in several years. 

A large crowd attended the 95th celebration of the Rolling Forks church last Sunday. The following pastors were present; Rev. Paul S. Reque, Gilbert Iowa; Pastor O. A. Olson and Pastor Youngquist.

1972 Bucks Homecoming crown King Steven Gorder and Queen Linda Andert at coronation ceremonies at SHS.

Ambulance board purchased a new 1973 van type unit. Ambulance drivers are Norman Biers, Elmer Wilke, Vernon Jergenson, Phil Landgraf and Henry Ras. 

It was announced this week that Helen Falta is the new extension Home Economist of Pope County. She replaces Jeanne Krogh. She stated that her home town is Pine City and graduated in June from the University of Minnesota.

Funeral services for Rudolph Bye, 88, lifelong resident of Swan Lake Township, were held from the Nora Lutheran Church Oct. 4. He is survived by his wife, Ellen; two sons, Raymond of Cyrus and Gordon of Kensington; and two daughters, Mrs. Chuck (Irene) Blocher of Starbuck and Mrs. Walter (Gladys) Griener of Morris.

Nancy C. Barsness of Cyrus has been awarded a scholarship from the Carl E. MacPherson Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Minnesota. Barsness is a 1963 graduate of Starbuck High School and is a junior in Political Science/Pre-Law at UMM.

Helping parents talk to their teenagers about sex and sexuality is one of the objectives of the four week Values and Choices unit to be taught to the 8th grade at Minnewaska Area High School. 

Continuing with their concerted efforts to seek positive ways to provide names of potential Family Physicians to locate their practice at the Minnewaska District Hospital and Starbuck Clinic, the Minnewaska District Hospital Board of Directors gave approval to offer a reward, in the amount of $10,000, to anyone who submits the name of a physician who is recruited and stays in practice for at least one year. 

An end of an era. Last Friday afternoon, shortly after the photo was snapped, the “Samuelson Rexall Drugs” sign came down and was replaced on Monday morning with a “Family Pharmacy” sign.

Minnewaska Regional Health Care System and Dr. Robert Bösl have signed a letter of intent which will lead to the purchase of the clinic business by the hospital. 

During harvest, farmers become more visible as they move combines, grain wagons, tractors and other farm implements down Minnesota’s roads more frequently. Commissioner Hugoson reminds drivers that safety is everyone’s responsibility during this busy time of year. 

After Oct. 13, there will be no question that motorists are entering the town of Starbuck. After several years of work, the Starbuck Gateway will finally make its first appearance. The gateway will be the first project to break ground after recommendations by the Minnesota Design Team were made in April 2000.

Sculptor Environmental Artist Philip Rickey made a two day trip to Starbuck on October 2 and 3 to take a look at Holly Skogen Park, get the plat and gather other materials for the design process.

The Lowry Council met for about an hour on October 2. Jeremy Anderson of Design Tree gave the council an update on the pond decommissioning project. He said the bid opening will be at 1 p.m. on October 9 at the Lowry Community Center and on October 16 at 6:30 p.m. the council will meet to award the big. 

The Minnewaska Strikers Women’s Soccer Club defeated Melrose 6-0 Thursday night at the Museum Field. This is the second time that the Strikers have shutout the Dutchmen this season.
