Playoff time is fast approaching and it looks like Minnewaska Area will be seeded fourth in the upcoming Section 6A Team Tourney.

During last week’s action, the Lakers earned sole possession of the WCC title with a 6-1 win at Sauk Centre last Tuesday to finish the conference schedule with a perfect 8-0 record.

The Lakers also played at Osakis, Thursday, losing to the state-ranked Silverstreaks, 6-1.

Minnewaska Area was also set to compete in the WCC Individual Tourney, Saturday at Alexandria, and results from that competition will be highlighted next week.

The Lakers were set to close out the regular season with a match at home against Staples-Motley, Monday (today), before getting ready for the start of the Section 6A Team Tourney, Thursday, Oct. 6.

Minnewaska Area will be seeded fourth in the section tourney and will host a home match in the opening round against the fifth seed at 4 p.m., Thursday.  The team tourney continues Tuesday, Oct. 11, while the Section 6A Individual Tourney is set for Oct. 12 and 18 at Rogers.

Six Lakers have double-digit wins heading into the final weeks of the season — Grace Jensen (14-3), Zoey Elwood (13-6), Avarie Uhde (12-7), Jayda Kolstoe (12-7), Katy Vold (11-8) and Sydney Dahl (10-9).

Minnewaska 6, Sauk Cen 1

The Lakers improve to a perfect 8-0 in the WCC after winning at Sauk Centre last Tuesday night, 6-1.  Minnewaska Area won its eighth-straight girls tennis conference title despite playing with only three seniors in the starting lineup.

Sauk Centre won its only point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at first singles, but Minnewaska Area gave up just 13 total games in the other six matches combined to win easily.

Alia Randt earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second singles, Olivia Danielson won 6-2, 6-2 at third singles and Jayda Kolstoe earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fourth singles.

In doubles, Olivia Bleick and Sydney Dahl prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles, Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood earned their ninth-straight win together at second doubles and Katy Vold and Avarie Uhde picked up the Lakers’ sixth point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at third doubles.

Osakis 6, Minnewaska 1

The Lakers came up short of upsetting state-ranked Osakis, Thursday, losing two third-set tiebreakers on the way to a 6-1 loss.

Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood continued their recent surge with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 tiebreaker win at second doubles for the Lakers’ only point.

Minnewaska also lost a three-setter at fourth singles as Jayda Kolstoe fell in a close match, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 tiebreaker, and Avarie Uhde and Katy Vold lost in three close sets at third doubles, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 tiebreaker.

In the other four matches, Osakis won in straight sets and did not give up more than three games in any set.
