Two points.  That’s all that separated BOLD and Minnewaska Area during a WCC volleyball matchup, Thursday night at Olivia, won by the Lakers 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15.  It was the third-straight conference win for the Lakers, who improved to 5-4 in the WCC and 6-6 overall with their latest win.

Minnewaska, which is tied for third in the WCC with Melrose and West Central Area, has two big matches set for this week.  The Lakers were set to host Montevideo, Tuesday (tomorrow) before playing at West Central Area, Thursday.

The Lakers are also set to take part in the Alexandria Invitational, set for Saturday.  “It was a huge boost for the girls to fight hard and play steady all night,” coach Michele Johnson said.  “In the sport of volleyball, that in itself is a great accomplishment.  I am very proud of the way the team is playing right now.”

Minnewaska 3, BOLD 2

Minnewaska and BOLD went back-and-forth for over two hours before the Lakers escaped with a 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15 victory over BOLD, Thursday.

Avery Fier, Dacia Fleury and Dreya Barsness combined for 45 kills with only 10 errors on 131 attempts for a 27 percent kill percentage.  As a team, the Lakers had a 20 percent kill percentage with 18 errors and 55 kills.

Barsness led the Lakers with 18 kills on 58 attacks, while Fleury had 14 kills with only two errors and Fier had 13 kills with two errors. “Our attack game was very effective,” coach Johnson said.  “We did a great job passing and setting the ball and the girls were all on in our attack game.  It was fun to watch.”

Miaya Guggisberg chipped in with seven more kills while leading the team with three of her team’s 10 blocks, while Barsness had 2.5 blocks, Fier had two, and Haley Shea had 1.5 blocks to go along with a season-high 49 set assists.

The Lakers did a great job controlling the ball as Fier had only three errors in 53 pass attempts and Barsness had three errors in 24 attempts.

Five Lakers had double-digit digs for the night as Barsness had 21, Fier had 15, Fleury had 14, Shea 12 and Haillie Schultz 10.

The Lakers also had a good night serving, going 100-for-112 with 12 aces. 

Fier led the way, going 17-for-17 with an ace, while other top servers for the match were Shea (17-for-18 with two aces), Barsness (20-for-22 with two aces), Schultz (15-for-17 with an ace) and Brooklyn Meyer (15-for-17 with two aces).
