The sale of M.O. Lia’s place in Walden abut a week ago, brought out a very large crowd and everything brought a good price, especially the stock. Cows went as high as $57. A bunch of 10 small calves came to $20 each. 

Building for rent, east of Gaarder’s Jewelry shop. Suitable for offices or small shop. Six dollars a month. I.M. Kalnes.

Our spring stock of ladies and misses coats are here. We show coats in 3/4 length and full length at $8.50 to $18.00. Farmer’s Store.

Services were conducted in the West Zion Church Sunday. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Hagen was christened, receiving the name of Maurice Kenneth.

Miss Esther Lybeck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lybeck and Mr. Clifford Opheim, son of Ole Opheim were married at the Cyrus Lutheran Parsonage on Feb. 21.

Funeral services were held at the St. Petre Church in Cyrus on Tuesday for John Stensby. He is survived by his widow and six sons; Ernest, Lester, Ray, Floyd, Harold and Willis. 

A crop show was held in Starbuck last week, sponsored by the Community Club. There was a prize a total of 202 entries for prizes; 100 entries for baked goods and 102 entires of grains, seeds, etc. The first prize winners in the baking contest were: Mrs. L.E. Finstad-soda biscuits; Mrs. Iver Hagen-cinnamon rolls; Mrs. N. Forde-sprut bakkelser; Mrs. H.L. Gorder-fruit cake; Mrs. J.O. Sando-Dairy butter; Mrs. L.E. Finstad-Angel Food Cake; Mrs. Oluf Haugen-mince pie; Mrs. Ole Overstad-lefse; Mrs. L.E. Finstad-bran muffins; Mrs. L.E. Finstad-graham bread; Amelia Spangrud-brown cookies; Mrs. P. Arnold Erickson, well know Minnewaska farmer is in the local hospital from an injury received on his right eye while sawing wood Saturday afternoon.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Howell Skoglund at Minneapolis on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Skoglund are the paternal grandparents.

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knutson on Washington’s birthday.

  A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Vinge on Feb. 21.

The “Bucks” ended their basketball season with only three wins this year.

Harold Tilman Johnshoy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman M. Johnshoy recently graduated from the Aviation Metalsmith School and was promoted to Corporal. He is presently stationed with the Marines in Jacksonville, Florida. 

Agnes Hagen-Tollefson and Edward Reveling, both of Starbuck, were married Feb. 21 at Fron Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home on the groom’s farm. 

Mr. and Mrs. Thilmer Rosten are the parents of an 8-1/2 pound baby boy born Sunday at the Glenwood hospital. 

Luther Nelson, who enlisted in the Navy, left Tuesday morning for Northfield where he will go to college for three months before entering training.

Mr. and Mrs. Tinus Feigum had their infant son baptized at Indherred Church Sunday. He received the name Richard Carl. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barke, Marceline Akers and Lloyd Gorder. 

Ten little girls helped Diane Stewart celebrate her 9th birthday Saturday.

An 8 lb. 2 oz. baby girl was born to the Gary Roers Saturday, March 7 at the Glenwood Hospital. 

Mr. and Mrs. Urness Larson are the proud parents of a 10 lb. baby girl born March 4. They now have three boys and a girl. 

A number of relatives and friends gathered at the Odin Barsness home Sunday afternoon to help Odin, Jr. celebrate his 10th birthday.

Several little girls helped Marcia Johnshoy celebrate her 2nd birthday Tuesday. 

Mr. and Mrs. Peter Veum moved to St. Paul Friday. Mr. Veum, who sold his interest on his farm to his brother, has accepted a position as second herdsman at the University farm. 

Mrs. Lloyd Landmark entertained some mothers and little children Saturday afternoon in honor of Susan’s first birthday.

Funeral services for Mrs. Elmer Wilke, 50, were held at First Baptist Church in Benson Saturday, February 16. She is survived by her husband, Elmer; her parents, and five children: Lloyd, 21, of Moorhead; Larry, 20, of Goldsboro, North Carolina; Lance, 12, Lorna 11 and Lisle, 5, all at home.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Sylvester, Hopkins, are the parents of a son, Steven Guy, born Saturday, February 23.

A meeting of the combined hospital boards and Steering Committee from the Minnewaska hospital, Starbuck and the Glenwood Community Hospital, Glenwood was held in the nurses dinning room at the Glenwood hospital, Wednesday, February 21 for open discussion concerning the present conflicts of and planning for the possible merger of the two existing hospitals to provide more adequate health care to the area. 

It was resolved by the group that in order for us to arrive at an equitable solution to our problem all the people of Pope County must become involved in the planning process. 

A first in the history of Starbuck athletics occurred last Saturday when 98 lb. Brad Swartz qualified for the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament.

Paul K. Jorgenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. LuVerne Jorgenson has enlisted in the Army Delayed Program and will report for One Station Unit Training May 3 at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri.

Funeral services for Julia Billehus, 92, were held from the Fron Lutheran Church Feb. 26. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bryant (Gerdes) Ulseth of Moorhead and Mrs. Erwin (Dorothy) Bachler of Winona.

Mark Fredrickson of Fredrickson’s Hereford Farms of Starbuck showed the Reserve Junior Champion bull at the Red River Falls Shows held in Crookston in February.

Dr. and Mrs. Foster O. Bucher of Centralia, Washington, announce the adoption of Sarah Kim, born in Seoul Korea. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Donald DeGier and Dr. and Mrs. F.D. Bucher of Starbuck. 

Funeral services for Eilert Braaten, 50, were held from the Starbuck Funeral Home Feb. 26. He is survived by his mother, Magda Dalager of Glenwood, and two sisters, Alice Hansen of Morris and Mrs. Clinton (Millie) Estenson of Benson.

Rick Anderson, a teacher at Angoon, Alaska, was recently selected for the third time in the past four years as an official for the Alaska State “AA” Boys basketball tournament in Anchorage, Alaska. He is the son of Maurice and Lorraine Anderson of Starbuck.

Minnewaska’s Glenn Frisell is the only Laker to advance into the weekend Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament in St. Paul. Frisell is a freshman at MAHS.

Funeral services for Amy Maanum, 72, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church February 3. She is survived by one nephew.

Pope County Extension Educator John E. (Jack) Morris of Glenwood will be inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Hall of Fame March 18.

Ben Hippe, a 6th grader at Starbuck Elementary was featured in the February 23 issue of the Minneapolis Star and Tribune in a special feature entitled “KIDSWORKS” in which girls and boys from the Upper Midwest respond to the problem/question proposed in the article. He is the son of Cathy Hippe and Allen Hippe.

Meeting on the day Gov. Tim Pawlenty released his proposed cuts for balancing the state’s 2003-04 budget – and less than two weeks after his unallotments from this year’s budget – the Pope County Board of Commissioners responded to the budget crisis with both action and words.  

Virgil Coziahr learned to make dentures while in the Navy, but hadn’t used the skill for more than twenty years, when he was recently called upon to use his skills to help people in need. He was invited by the Christian Dental Society of Illinois to embark on a trip to Jamaica to help those who normally would not have access to this type of dentistry. 

While attempting to close a $4.2 billion gap in the 2004-2005 state budget, Pawlenty is proposing an almost 29 percent cut in Local Government Aid payments which could cause headaches for many cities, including Starbuck.

The Minnewaska Area Schools (MAS) Board of Education discussed options for the superintendent search at their monthly meeting on Feb. 19. The school board was informed that the top candidate it hoped to hire for Superintendent had turned down the position due to family reasons.  

Based on recommendation by interim Pope County Assessor Farley Grunig, county commissioners set the starting public auction price of three derelict downtown Glenwood buildings at $1 each. However, that bargain price tag comes with strings attached; the buyer will have to remove the buildings dispose of the debris and level the lots.

Representatives of Glenwood area groups packed the board room at Tuesday’s county board meeting. They were there to show their support of the Comprehensive Community Improvement Initiative (CCII) project, slated for 2018, that would revamp Glenwood’s downtown street plan and update its aging utilities.
