Ankeny, Kolstoe, Tank, Hagen, Oeltjen, Luetmer win titles for Lakers

The Minnewaska Area girls track team won the WCC title last Tuesday night at Montevideo, while the Laker boys team placed fourth of eight schools in a meet won by Sauk Centre.

The Laker girls won eight events and the boys’ team had two titleists.  Winning WCC championships for the Lakers were Lauryn Ankeny in the 300 hurdles (47.94), McKenzie Luetmer in the 400 (59.44), Elsey Hagen in the 3200 (12:43.15), the girls’ 1600 and 3200 meter relays, Jayda Kolstoe in the shot put (34-1 3/4) and discus (92-3), Phemie Oeltjen in the pole vault (8-0), Maeson Tank in the 400 (51.99) and the boys’ 3200 meter relay.

“It was a beautiful day for the West Central Conference Meet,” boys’ coach Zach Traphagen said.  “The boys finished fourth overall behind some very good competition which will only make us better. We saw some very good results from kids hitting new PRs, but saw some inconsistencies in other areas.  I’m really proud of the progress this team has made. Now, we can focus on cleaning up a few things, get some time to rest and get healthy, and be at our best for the Sub-Section meet next Tuesday.

“The girls are really starting to hit their stride and it’s a huge point of emphasis to stay focused and stay hungry going into this Saturday’s State True Team meet. It’s a very exciting time of the year, and we believe the best is still yet to come.”

The sub-section meet is set for Tuesday (tomorrow) at Maple Lake while the Section 5A Track and Field Meet is set for Wednesday, May 31 at St. John’s University.
