Emma Poegel had a two-run homerun and Mataya Mix pitched a complete-game two-hitter for her third win of the season to lead the Minnewaska softball team to a 4-1 victory over Yellow Medicine East, Friday night at home,

Earlier in the week, the Lakers were swept in a doubleheader at Melrose, 10-0 and 12-4.  Melrose and Morris currently lead the WCC with unbeaten league records.

This week, the Lakers have five games scheduled beginning with a game at Morris, Monday (today), a home doubleheader with WCA, Tuesday (tomorrow), a game at Osakis, Thursday, and another game at home against BOLD, Friday.

Melrose 10-12, Waska 0-4 

The Lakers were swept in a doubleheader at Melrose Area last Tuesday night, losing by a shutout in the first game, 10-0, and also losing the nightcap, 12-4.  Melrose rapped out 28 total hits in the two games combined, scoring at least one run in 10 of its 13 at-bats.

In the first game, Minnewaska Area was outhit 16-2 as Melrose scored at least one run in five of the six innings to end the game early due to the 10-run rule.

Mataya Mix took the loss on the mound while Lauryn Stryhn and Berlynn Green had the only hits for the Lakers.  Stryhn’s hit was a triple.

•  In the second game, the Laker bats came alive with eight hits and four runs.  However, Melrose kept up its offensive pressure, scoring four runs over the first two innings to lead 4-3 and then adding eight more runs over the next three innings to go up 12-3 before the Lakers scored their final run in the seventh.

Haillie Schulz led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases, while Emma Poegel was 2-for-4 with an RBI-double, and Norah VanZee was 2-for-3.

Adding one hit was Berlynn Green, while Avery Lewison had a run scored and base on balls, Ella Roering had an RBI-sacrifice fly and Emma Hawkinson scored a run.

VanZee took the loss, pitching a complete game and giving up 12 hits, 12 runs (only three earned) and five walks.  She was hurt by six Minnewaska errors leading to nine unearned runs.

Minnewaska 4, YME 1 

The Lakers got a great pitching effort from Mataya Mix and some timely hitting to beat the YME Sting in a non-conference game at home, Friday, 4-1.

The Sting were up 1-0 through three innings before the Lakers scored a run in the fourth to tie it up and then added three more in the sixth for their third win of the season.

Emma Poegel, who went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, had a big two-run homer during the sixth inning. Lauryn Stryhn added two more hits, going 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Eliana Marthaler had an RBI-double and Mix added a single, scored a run and also walked.

Mix, who improved to 3-3 for the season, gave up just two hits, one unearned run and one walk while striking out four.  Ella Roering also had a walk and RBI for the Lakers and Berlynn Green had a run, walk and stolen base.
