As Starbuck prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Starbuck Lakeshore Park in 2026, a grassroots idea has grown into a meaningful citywide effort. The Adopt A Shelter program, launched in 2023, invites families, civic groups, alumni classes, and local businesses to adopt and care for one of the park’s four picnic shelters or the bandshell.

The goal is simple but powerful: preserve and enhance a beloved community space while fostering civic pride and stewardship.

A Community-Driven

Initiative

First introduced to the city council in early 2023 by Starbuck resident Roger Aaberg, the Adopt A Shelter concept quickly gained traction. By that spring, a framework was in place allowing groups to perform twice-yearly inspections, address basic upkeep, and submit a wish list of improvements for city review and approval.

Council Member Mary Baukol noted, “This is a great idea.”

The program complements the city’s regular maintenance by inviting residents to take an active role in keeping the park in excellent condition. It’s not meant to replace city efforts, but rather to expand what’s possible through shared responsibility.

How It Works

Groups that participate in the Adopt A Shelter program commit to:

•Performing two inspections per year

•Submitting inspection reports with notes on conditions and suggestions

•Cleaning and performing light maintenance

•Creating a wish list of improvements for city review

•Organizing volunteers or obtaining bids (if desired)

•Participating in fundraising (optional)

Typical projects include power washing, painting touch-ups, weed control, bench and table cleaning, and minor repairs to fixtures. Any major upgrades require city council approval to ensure safety and consistency with park standards.

Participation is flexible—groups aren’t required to fund improvements themselves, though some may choose to raise funds or seek matching support.

A Model for Involvement: Shelter #2

The Starbuck High School Class of 1968 was the first group to officially adopt a shelter. At their 55th class reunion, members decided to adopt Shelter #2 and continue gathering twice a year to care for it. They raised $1,000 and got to work in 2024, completing projects such as power washing the building and bathrooms, caulking cracks, painting interiors and posts, cleaning fixtures, and replacing shelving.

Their example illustrates the positive impact a small group can make through shared effort and commitment to the community.

Honoring the Park’s Legacy

Since its founding on May 21, 1926, Starbuck Lakeshore Park has hosted reunions, celebrations, and cherished summer memories. The Adopt A Shelter program ensures this treasured space remains welcoming and well cared for as it enters its second century.

Supported by The Friends of Starbuck Lakeshore Park and the Park and Recreation Committee, the initiative seeks to see every shelter adopted and looking its best by the 100th anniversary celebration.
