Girls golf team sweeps WCC meets to easily win title

The Minnewaska Area girls golf team won the final two WCC meets last Wednesday at Benson and the Minnewaska Golf Club. That gave the Lakers a clean sweep of all eight conference meets this season.
The Lakers, coached by Tony Janu and Jenna Janu, ended the year in first place again with 56 points, followed by Melrose (46), Benson (28), BOLD and WCA (both 23), Morris Area-CA (22), Montevideo (17) and Sauk Centre (15).
That’s at least the fourth-straight conference title for the team and four-straight seasons of winning all the WCC meets during the season.
Arivia DeBoer earned medalist honors during the meet at Minnewaska with a round of 39, with Anna Kollman placing second and Annika DeBoer third, while Kyra Nelson led the Lakers at Benson with a 39 to place second overall, followed by Arivia DeBoer in third and Annika DeBoer in fourth.
Minnewaska Area has two more meets left on the regular-season schedule. The Lakers are set to golf at the Brainerd Invitational, Wednesday, May 14 before hosting the Minnewaska Area Girls Invitational, Friday, May 16.
After that, the team will prepare for the Section 3AA Prelims, set for Wednesday, May 21 and the Section 3AA Finals, set for Wednesday, May 28, at Buffalo Lake.
• The 2025 varsity girls golf roster at Minnewaska Area includes senior Arivia DeBoer, junior Ava Kollman, sophomore Annika DeBoer, and ninth-graders Kyra Nelson, Anna Kollman, Lillie Ogdahl and Michaela Johnson. Coaches are Tony Janu and Jenna Janu.
WCC at Waska-Benson
The Lakers completed their eight-meet sweep of the WCC by winning a pair of conference meets at Minnewaska and Benson last Wednesday.
The Lakers opened up the day with the team title at Minnewaska, shooting a team total of 169 to win by 22 strokes over runner-up Melrose.
Arivia DeBoer led a one-two-three finish for Minnewaska Area with a nine-hole total of 39 to earn medalist honors, while Anna Kollman was second with a 40 and Annika DeBoer was third with a 42.
The Lakers had all seven golfers in the top-18 as Lillie Ogdahl added a 48 to place 10th, Kyra Nelson had a 49 to earn 12th, Ava Kollman carded a 50 to place 14th and Michaela Johnson came home with a 53 to earn 18th.
• After a short break and a drive to Benson, the golfers competed again at the Benson Golf Club where the Lakers had a 165 team total to win again by 13 strokes over Melrose.
Avery Braegelmann, of Melrose, earned medalist honors with a one-under 35, while Kyra Nelson had a 39 for the Lakers to place second, Arivia DeBoer had a 40 to earn third and Annika DeBoer had a 41 to place fourth.
This time, all seven Laker golfers were in the top 13. Michaela Johnson had a season-low 42 to place sixth, Ava Kollman had a 45 to earn ninth, Anna Kollman carded a 46 to place 10th and Lillie Ogdahl shot a 47 to end up in 13th.
The Lakers were a model of consistency this year with team scores of 166, 165, 163, 154, 161, 167, 169 and 165 over the eight conference meets. The 154 team low was recorded at Morris.
