The Minnewaska Area girls track and field team won the Section True-Team Meet at Holdingford last Tuesday while the boys team placed third and had to wait to see if it qualified for the State True-Team Meet.

Two nights later, both teams placed first at the Melrose Invitational.  It was the third title this season for the Laker boys and eighth in nine meets for the girls team.

This week, the Lakers have two more meets, including the WCC Track and Field Meet, Tuesday (tomorrow) and the State True-Team meet at Eden Prairie, Saturday.

Section True-Team

The Minnewaska Area track teams competed at the Section True-team Meet at Holdingford last Tuesday with the Lakers girls placing first of 11 teams and the boys earning third.

The Laker girls now advance to the State True-Team Meet, set for Saturday, May 17 at Eden Prairie while the boys team will have to wait a few days to find out if they also qualify to the State Meet.

“The Lakers had a great day at the section true-team meet,” boys coach Zach Traphagen said. “The girls placed first and the boys ended up taking third place and will be entered into the Wildcard Virtual Meet that will determine whether or not we qualify for State True Team as a Wildcard entry.

“I feel like we put ourselves in a pretty strong position as a potential wildcard team, but we will see how the other section results shake out.”

The Lakers set three school records during the meet as Jeythan Quirindongo was timed in 22.56 in the 200 meter dash to break the 32-year old school record of 22.7 set by Christian Johnson in 1993; Lauryn Ankeny broke Shiona Beecher’s 2004 record of 16.1 in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.95; and the boys 400 meter relay team of Quirindongo, Carter Meyer, Tristan O’Neil and Asante Adams also broke the old school record of 44.29 set by Jacob Lien, Gage Rogers, Isaac Meyer and Deshon Boyd in 2022 with a time of 44.27.
