The Laker trap team took to a smokey background field at 8 in the morning on Tuesday, June 10 to compete in the Class 2A Championships in Alexandria.
There were 64 schools and 986 shooters on day 2 of the nine day tournament, which is the largest day for the whole tournament. Visibility was not ideal, and the morning light makes the targets hard to see, but the kids had a great first half carding four 25-straights.
Koda Noyes shot his first ever 25-straight for 48 in the first half, Levi Schultz broke a 49×50 that included a 25 on the first box, and August Reichmann crushed a perfect 50-straight. The team shot 50 targets each and then rotated with the other schools.
The Laker team was back on the field at 1 p.m. to finish. “It was amazing to see the turnout of spectators for our team,” coach Jennie Stone said. “There had to be over 100 fans there to cheer the team on. In between rounds, we had a huge pot luck lunch back in the campground and fed them all.”
The second half of competition brought more big scores as the team circled seven more 25-straights. August Reichmann broke them all in the second half giving him his first ever 100-straight. Onyx Johnson crushed the last 25-straight to add to his three 24’s for an impressive 97. Levi Schultz broke a 47 on the back half to match with his 49 for a 96 on the day. Rounding out the scores for the team total were Hunter Kalb with a 25-straight and 94 overall and Dylan VanZee with a 94.
At the end of the day, the team finished in third place with a 481×500 behind Wheaton with a 487 and Ortonville with a 485.
Individually, the team did very well. August Reichmann broke a 100 straight and tied with two other shooters for high male varsity out of 385 in that category. He received a 1st place medallion as well as high overall medallion. Other varsity shooters finished as follows: Onyx Johnson (tied for ninth), Levi Schultz (tied for 20th), Hunter Kalb and Dylan VanZee (tied for 40th), Jon Hagen and Sam Jones (tied for 67th), and Matthew Longtin and Isaac Hennen (tied for 83rd).
For female varsity, there were 45 shooters and we had Tabbi Durand and Kendra Schultz tied for 15th and Holly Hennen tied for 41st.
Jr. Varsity males category had 273 shooters. Koda Noyes broke a 92×100 to tie for 1st place, and in a reverse run tie breaker, he was awarded second place. Landon Weber and Carter Katzenmeyer tied for 53rd, Zach Olson tied for 137th, Garrett Blair was tied for 182nd and Gabe Maasjo tied for 221st.
Meanwhile, Madeline Reents tied for sixth in the Jr. Varsity female division with a score of 83. In addition, Novice male category (those with a season average 14 and under) had 177 shooters. Liam Wagner went on to tie for 41st, Decklin Johnson was tied for 46th, and in the Female novice division, Breuklynn Beene tied for 42nd.
The team currently sits in 3rd place after two days of the tournament. After all nine days, the top 40 teams move on to the MSHSL Championship in Prior Lake on Friday June 20. Dylan Van Zee has already secured his spot in the top 100 shooters in the state to compete for State Champion. We are hoping the team can accompany him, but for that we will have to wait and see.
