From June 18, 1915
Iver Hagen died at his home Tuesday evening. Mr. Hagen was born in Lesje Gulbrandsdalen, Norway, in 1949. In 1976 he came to Pope County and bought a farm a few miles East of Starbuck. Mr. and Mrs. Hagen had eight children, two of whom died infancy. Besides his wife, the following children survive him: Marie, Arthur, Ruth, Edith, Hulda and Irene.
A beautiful wedding was celebrated at the Troen home June 14, when Miss Olava Troan was given in marriage to Prof. M. Casper Johnshoy. The wedding ceremony was performed in the Indherred church. Miss Selma Ranum was organist, and aksi rendered a vocal solo. Groomsmen were Peter Troen and Casper Gorder. Matrons of honor were Mrs. Casper Gorder and Mrs. J. W. Johnshoy. The maid of honor was the brides sister, Miss Ellen Troen. J. Walter Johnshoy was the best man. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Troen of Minnewaska township. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Johnshoy of this village. The happy couple expect to spend their honeymoon at the Worlds Explosition in San Francisco, Cal.

Marvel Louella Wesen and Milo Hagen were married on Wednesday, June 17, by Rev. Kleven at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wesen. The Misses Florence and Violet Wesen, sisters of the bride; and Lloyd Wesen, brother of the bride, and Sidney Anderson, cousin of the groom, were groomsmen.
Miss Valborg Stadsvold and Leo W. Hagen were united in marriage on Saturday, June 6, at Ben-son, Rev. Chr. Pederson performing the ceremony. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stadsvold of Rolling Forks, and the groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Hagen of Barsness township. Miss Alice Hagen, sister of the groom, was bridesmaid and Oscar Stadsvold was grooms-man. Little Rosella Stadsvold was flower girl. The newlyweds left for a honeymoon trip to Hatton, N. D.
It was a big day for members of the Boys and Girls clubs when most of them piled into six cars with the drivers on Monday and went around to visit homes of the different members in the country and looked over their pigs, chickens and gardens. Miss Gladys Ness, as president of the club, with H. R. Giberson, assistant state leader of Boys and Girls clubs, were in the pilot car. They concluded their trip by having a lunch at the tourist park at noon.

A road is being built at the tourist park to the kitchen and bath house. This will make it possible for all cars to get down to the beach from the bath house and kitchen without driving on private property. The two patches of land near the swimming hole, known as the gravel pits, are to be filled in and made into roads. This property was donated by Ole Tharaldson and Christ Brevig to be used as a means by which farmers could have access to the lake 50 years ago. In those days, farmers would polish their plow shares and set their wagon wheels in the lake. Pioneers can tell of how they would congregate there to water their horses and put their farm equipment into shape.
Miss Ethel Smedstad, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oluf Smedstad, and Joseph Gandrud, son of Mr. and Mrs. e P. G. Gandrud of Glenwood were united in marriage at the / Fron church on Saturday 1 evening by Rev. M. C.
Johnshoy. Mrs. Arnold Frandeen was matron of honor, and Pearl and Cora Gandrud were bridesmaids. Ardis and Deloris Smedstad were flower girls and Donald Gandrud was ring bearer. The groom’s attendants were Rudolph Gandrud and Ovid Smedstad.
From the hottest days so far this year on Thursday and Friday of last week the thermometer dropped Sunday following a heavy rain to near freezing temperatures on Monday and Tuesday nights.
Miss Anna Moe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Moe and Eugene Paulson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Paulson of Wolverton, were united in marriage at the Indherred Church on June 8 by Rev. Melvin Moe, brother of the bride. Mabel Moe was bridesmaid and Raymond Paulson was the groom’s attendant.
The erection of the screening and washing plant of the Starbuck Construction Co. was completed last week, and operations are in full swing, supplying the factory with screened and washed sand for their cement products. Five silos have been erected by the company recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Stadsvold are the parents of a baby boy born on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Nels Stenson are the parents of a baby boy born on Wednesday. Miss Gladys Weeks of Thief River Falls and Mr. Clarence Nelson, son of Mrs. Minnie J. Nelson of Northfield, formerly of Starbuck, were married at Mason City, Iowa on June 12.

Gordon Steen of Starbuck has been ordered for induction on June 22.
S/Sgt. Clarmont Dahlseng is at present located i Germany and was recently awarded a bronze star medal and citation.
On the evening of June 4, Ruth E. Pearson of Paton, lowa, became the bride of Glenn C. Hoplin of Lowry.
T/5 Edwin Helgeson arrived home Sunday evening after a year and three days as prisoner of Germany as a tank driver. He was wounded in both legs and left arm, being the only survivor of his crew the day he was captured in Italy, thirteen days before the invasion of France.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hawkinson was baptized Monday afternoon at their home. She received the name Mary Francis.

At a candlelight service performed by the Rev. Joseph L. Knutson of Concordia college on Friday evening, May , 27, Marla Jean Peterson and Donald Francis Lund spoke marriage vows. The service was in Elim Lutheran church. The young couple flew to New Orleans for their wedding trip. After June 10 they will be at home in Moorhead.
Mrs. Elmer V. Erickson and Eunice attended the commencement exercises at the University of Minnesota Saturday evening, June 11, when Marjorie Erickson Hamonda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Erickson, was one of the 2490 graduates.
Diane Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stewart, became the bride of Gene R. Savelkoul, Minneapolis, in a double-ring ceremony at the Cathedral of St. Mark, Minneapolis. After a short wedding trip, Mr. and Mrs. Savelkoul will be at home in Minneapolis.
A lovely wedding took place at the Indherred church on May 7, when Helen Marie Rosten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Rosten of Glenwood, and Virgil L. Hagen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hagen of Starbuck, exchanged marital vows. Rev. G. O. Forde performed the double-ring ceremony.

The “Beatle Chips” consisting of Judy Teigen, Jane Gorder, Faith Sumption and Eloise Amundson of the White Bear Lake 4-H Club, who were winners in the Share-the-Fun festival held in Glenwood on May 4, will compete in the Dist. contest to be held in Alexandria on July 20.
The Starbuck Cub Scouts, 10 years old and their fathers were invited to attend Webeloes Day Saturday at Camp Wilderness to get acquainted with the camp, as they will be a Boing camp there next year as Boy Scouts. The following fathers and cubs attended: Don Espenson and Barry, Arthur Erickson and Steven, Lyle Disrud and Ronald, Harry Erickson and Paul, Norman Hagen and Craig, Robert Deaner and Mark, Arlo Fahje, Vernon Jergenson and Roger, Julius Aaberg and Jeffrey, Odell Braaten and Royce.
Hilda M. Hagstrom will retire on July 2, 1965, after 32 years and two months with the Post Office Dept. at Lowry, Minn.
Winners of the Swifty Flyers Sweepstakes contest which has been under way at Mortenson’s Shoe Service for the past two months were selected Saturday evening. Miss Elaine Opdahl made the drawings. Betty Olson received the Chain-Drive racing car, and Dale Andeson won the polyethylene paddle-wheeler boat.

Midsummer Eve Festival to be held Sunday at Lakeshore Park.
Starbuck Jaycees formed: Jim Maki is first president.
Two torn down buildings put a large hole on Main Street when the former Walt and Vi’s Cafe was taken down by Harold Mortenson, board by board.
The former Thorstad Hardware building which was located west of the cafe building went down and was cleaned up in two days. The First National Bank purchased the former cafe and Chuck Blocher bought the Thorstad building.
An open house bridal shower in honor of Marlene Braaten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Braaten, will be held at the East Zion Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be a short program at 2:30 p.m. Marlene is the bride-to-be of William (Bill) Kennedy.
There will be an open house bridal shower honoring Charlotte Maclver, bride-to-be of Ronald Disrud, Monday, June 30th from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fron Church parlors. Everyone is welcome.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Watnaas representing Starbuck Creamery Co., Starbuck, Minn., attended a 3 day Manager Seminar at Lake Okoboji, Iowa June 15 to 18 as part of the 24th annual Lakes Conference sponsored by Land-O-Lakes Agricultural Services.
Mr. and Mrs. Roger Larson announce the birth of their second child, a 7 lb. 5 oz. daughter, Kara Michelle, born Monday, June 16th at the Minnewaska Hospital. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Earl Larson of Starbuck and maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy P. Knutson of Glenwood.

The Starbuck Stars will travel to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis on Sunday, June 23 to play the Alexandria Clippers in Pomme de Terre League action. The Stars-Clippers game will be played following the Minnesota Twins vs. Texas Rangers game.
A chartered bus will leave from the Starbuck school parking lot at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning and will return immediately following the conclusion of the Stars contest.
The Starbuck Airport was the site of the Annual Pope County Flyers’ Fly In last Sunday. Approximately 425 persons, including Earl, Wade and Shaun Stottler, above, took advantage of the good egg, sausage and pancake breakfast that was served. More than 20 planes landed at the airport for the annual event. Winner of the grand prize drawing was Fr. John Caskey of Morris.
Mr. and Mrs. Don (Donna) Lilienthal of Quamba, MN (near Mora, MN) took over the ownership and operation of the Cyrus Red Owl recently. They purchased the business from Mr. and Mrs. Harold Lykins. The Lykins had purchased the business from Mr. and Mrs. Pat Olson. The Lykins moved to Menagha and plan to go into business there.

Reigning Little Miss Starbuck Ashley Brown and Princess Allison Freeman will relinquish their titles as a new Little Miss Starbuck and Princess will be crowned on Sunday, July 2 at the Starbuck Lakeshore Park bandshell.
This marks the tenth coronation of the Little Miss Starbuck Pageant.
This year there are seven young ladies vying for the 1995-95 crowns.
Those candidates are: Courtney Brosh, daughter of Keith and Karen Brosh; Kayla Dell, daughter of John Dell and Judy Marrin; Cassandra (Cassie) Kay Hauglie, daughter of Loren and Jackie Hauglie; Ashley Holte, daughter of Milo and Karen Holte; Rachel Lundebrek, daughter of Joy DuBois and Allan Lundebrek; Tina Marie Meulebroeck, daughter of Jerry Meulebrock and Linda Schoen; Sarah Jean Pederson, daughter of Blaine and Karla Pederson.
Members of the Pleasant Hill Troopers 4-H Club, along with the volunteer help of Sue Frass, Elsie Meyer and Ron and David Feigum planted 4,000 flowers in the Morning Glory Garden, near the Minnewaska House on Highways 28 & 29 east of Starbuck. The flowers were donated by the First National Bank of Starbuck.

Matthew Anderson, son of Paul and Faith Anderson of Starbuck, pictured on the left, was one of 159 graduate and post-graduate candidates who received degrees at Luther Seminary’s 136th commencement ceremony held at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis last month. He is a 1996 graduate of Minnewaska Area High School and a 2000 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead. He is currently working with synod personnel in seeking his first pastoral call. He is pictured here with his grandfather. Rev. James Sumption of Starbuck, who graduated over 50 years ago from Luther Seminary. Anderson and his wife, Lacee, currently live in St. Paul. Matthew will deliver the sermon at his home church, Fron Lutheran in Starbuck on Sunday, June 26, at the 8:30 and 10:45 services. Justin Neugebauer, the current intern pastor at Fron Church, and a classmate of Anderson, will lead the liturgy for the two services.
Karly Watson, daughter of Ernie and Marla Watson and soon to be a senior at Minnewaska Area High School, was named by the Starbuck American Legion Auxiliary to the 59th Annual Girls’ State, which was held last week. The event was held on the campus of Bethel College. The program is a practical application of Americanship and good citizenship.

Bike winners at the Lowry Bike Rodeo on June 13 were: Dietrich Reidenbach, Selah Beecher, Peyton Kirkwol, Dane Madsen, Olivia Logan, James Nichtern, Sophie Boll, Marshall Nichtern and Annika Boll, and Police Officer Andrew Pederson supervised the biking in a straight-line drill at slow speed.
Reversing a decision made in May 2012, the Minnewaska Area Schools Board of Education reinstated boys’ soccer as an official Lakers sport. To balance the boys’ and girls’ sports opportunities, the board also voted to add a girls’ dance team beginning in the 2016-17 school year.
Approximately 100 people took to the paths of Glenwood City Park on June 12 for the 15th annual Relay for Life event, including 21 cancer survivors. Lining the walkers’ path were 634 luminaries honoring those who have battled cancer.
