Celebration set for June 21–22
The historic Terrace Mill will celebrate its grand re-opening next weekend, June 21–22, marking its official return after closures prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent organizational changes.
The event, free and open to the public, will be held on the Terrace Mill grounds, with donations encouraged to support participating artists and the foundation.
The Terrace Mill Foundation’s new board of directors announced a full season of programming, beginning with art exhibits featuring the work of Orlando Haugland, Gerald Solbreken and Jan Devick—all of whom have personal ties to the Terrace area. Haugland’s “Terrace” mixed media sculptures, Solbreken’s wood carvings, and Devick’s mixed media pieces and paintings will be on display throughout the summer.
Among the weekend highlights is the return of the popular Ordway Prairie tour, led by Ralph Hanson. Attendees should meet at the Mill at 10 a.m. for a carpool to explore the region’s native flora and fauna.
A memorial dedication for longtime volunteer Robert “Bob” Greenfield is scheduled for Saturday, June 21 at 2 p.m. Greenfield served the Terrace Mill Foundation for over 30 years. Family and friends are invited to attend the ceremony honoring his legacy.
Those attending can also enjoy food from the Terrace Mill Kitchen, including pulled pork sandwiches and chips sponsored by Mamma G’s of Lowry. Local artist Sabrina Andersen will offer face painting for all ages. She will have her own designs as well as be recreating popular designs of Jan Devick, who did face painting for over 40 years, and created many totem designs, with her sample board being on display for the celebration.
On Sunday, June 22, the Sunburg Trolls Classic Car Club will showcase classic vehicles on the mill grounds. At 11 a.m., visitors can take part in a yoga and sound bowl session led by Barb Ostrander and Amber Dauner Bartlett, offering a relaxing, all-levels yoga practice and sound bath experience beside the millstream.
In addition to re-opening festivities, the Terrace Mill Foundation will offer a series of summer art classes:
•Woodcarving Class:
On Saturday, June 14, from 1–3 p.m., participants ages 14 and older can learn to carve a wooden feather from cottonwood bark. Led by Roger Thalman and the Prairie Woodcarvers of Alexandria, the $40 fee includes tools, supplies and a carving glove.
•Songwriting Workshop:
Fred Keller of the folk duo The Skally Line will lead a songwriting session on Sunday, June 29, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Mill. Designed for all levels, the $30 workshop will focus on storytelling through music, with an emphasis on Minnesota’s past.
•Beginner Rosemaling:
Artist/instructor Carol Braaten will teach Rogaland-style rosemaling on Saturday, August 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church. Open to ages 16 and up, the $60 course includes instruction and materials for painting a sandwich board.
The Terrace Mill will be open to the public from June 1 through Sept. 7: Fridays from 3–7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Additional hours are available by appointment.
