•  Thorfinnson-Randt in “Final Four”

The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team ended its season in the Section 6A semifinals with a 5-2 loss to NLS last Tuesday at Rogers.  The Wildcats went on to earn the section team title with a 4-3 win over Osakis in the finals.  The Lakers ended the season with a 12-7 record, which included a perfect 8-0 record in the WCC to earn the Lakers their ninth-straight conference title.

Minnewaska also competed in the first two rounds of the Section 6A Individual Tourney last Wednesday at Rogers.  Katy Vold and Rachel Rankin competed in singles, while the teams of Olivia Danielson-Avarie Uhde and Megan Thorfinnson-Alia Randt competed in doubles.

Still left in contention for state berths are Thorfinnson and Randt, who won their first two matches and will now play in the “Final Four”, Tuesday (tomorrow) in Rogers.

Minnewaska Area coach Tara Reichmann now has an unofficial 493 wins in her career coaching both boys and girls tennis and could pick up win No. 500 this spring during the boys tennis season.

The Lakers were eliminated with a 5-2 loss to NLS in the Section 6A semifinals last Tuesday at Rogers.  Minnewaska Area ended the team portion of its season with an overall record of 12-7 and WCC mark of 8-0.

It was a very close match as NLS pulled out two three-set matches to earn the deciding points.  The Wildcats also went on to win the Section 6A title with a 4-3 victory over top-seeded Osakis in the championship match later in the day.

Alia Randt earned one point for the Lakers with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at first singles, while Addy Heid won 6-4, 6-2 at fourth singles.  Heid and Randt, both sophomores, have two of the top records for the Lakers this season at 16-5 and 15-6, respectively.

NLS won a three-set match at second doubles over Katy Vold and Katie Sorenson, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, to earn its fourth point and the Wildcats also won 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 tiebreaker at second singles over Megan Thorfinnson for its fifth point.

In the other matches, Rachel Rankin lost at third singles (6-1, 6-3), Olivia Danielson and Avarie Uhde lost at first doubles (6-1, 7-5) and Norah VanZee and Kaylen Blair fell in two sets at third doubles (6-2, 6-3).

NLS played with a lineup of five seniors, two juniors and three sophomores, while the Lakers had four juniors, three sophomores and three ninth-graders.

Section 6A Individuals

Six members of the Lakers competed at the Section 6A Individual Tennis Tournament at Rogers last Wednesday.  The doubles’ teams of Alia Randt-Megan Thorfinnson and Olivia Danielson-Avarie Uhde competed for the Lakers.

Randt and Thorfinnson won both of the matches last Wednesday to earn a berth in the “Final Four” where they will play a team from Litchfield.  Randt (17-6 record) and Thorfinnson (16-7) beat a team from St. John’s Prep in the opening round, 6-0, 6-1, and also beat a team from Melrose in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3.

Teams from Osakis and NLS are in the other bracket and two of the teams will advance to the state tourney.  There is a true-second format for Section 6A.

Danielson (13-10) and Uhde (13-10) also won their first match, 6-2, 6-0, over a team from BBE, before falling to the top-seeded team from Osakis in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-4.

In singles play, Rachel Rankin and Katy Vold competed for the Lakers.  Rankin (16-7) upset Emma Wuotila, of Litchfield, in the first round, 6-1, 6-3 before losing to Amyra Gamez, of NLS, in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

Vold (13-9) fell to Ella Wieland, of NLS, in the opening round, 6-1, 6-0

In the “Final Four” are Gamez and Wieland, both from NLS, along with the top two seeds, Leah Maddock and Bria Hoffarth, both of Osakis.
