Growing Green

By Robin Trott, Extension Educator

Landlords, farmers and agri-business professionals are encouraged to attend one of the University of Minnesota Extension’s farmland rental contract meetings, held across the state. Farmland rental rates are a significant cost for farmers, and determining a fair rental agreement can be challenging in today’s economy.

Negotiating a rental rate that benefits both landowners and farmers is not easy. Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educator in Ag Business Management, will provide practical examples, worksheets, and factsheets to help determine fair rental rates for both parties.

Topics at the meetings will include local trends in farmland rental rates, current land values, and sales. Attendees will also learn about input costs, current corn and soybean prices, and flexible rental agreements. A key focus will be determining affordable rent that farmers can pay while providing landowners with a fair return.

The meeting in Alexandria will take place on Thursday, Nov. 19, with two sessions, 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., at the Douglas County Public Works meeting room (526 Willow Drive). A separate entrance and parking are available. Meetings will last approximately two hours. No pre-registration or fees are required.
