The Minnewaska baseball team began a busy week on the road in Spicer to take on the New London-Spicer Wildcats.

The Lakers’ offense was quiet, having fallen behind by a 6-0 score, before scoring a run in the top of the sixth inning.

The loss was just the second of the year for the Lakers.

Minnewaska 1 Game 1 

Melrose and Minnewaska hooked up for a doubleheader at Marthaler Field on Tuesday.

In game one the Minnewaska offense was stymied again as the Lakers dropped their second game in a row.

Despite only getting two hits  through the first four innings, Minnewaska held a 1-0 lead after Jack Majerus got a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth, then stole second and scored on a single by Jack Larson.

The Dutchmen tied the score in the top of the sixth, then scored three in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 victory.

In game two Minnewaska batted as the visiting team. Despite recent troubles scoring runs, the Lakers scratched out single runs in four different innings.

The four runs were more than enough as PJ Johnson spun a three-hit shutout. The pitching gem helped Minnewaska break a two-game losing streak.

In the first, fourth and fifth innings the Lakers’ lead-off batter reached base and scored. Jack Majerus and Noah Jensen each had two hits, accounting for half of Minnewaska’s eight-hit total.

PJ Johnson went the distance for the win, surrendering just three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Johnson was never in trouble, with just one runner reaching second base the entire game.

Minnewaska 10 BOLD 0 Game 1 

Minnewaska continued their busy week with another doubleheader at Marthaler Field on Friday, just a day after heavy rains had soaked the area. 

The Minnewaska batters soaked the Warriors pitchers for nine runs in the second inning on their way to a 10-0, five inning victory. 

BOLD pitchers gave up six walks, which combined with the Lakers’ 12 singles, led to their 10 run tally. Torii Johnson had three hits, while Jack Majerus and Nathan Dell had two knocks each.

Torii Johnson one-upped brother PJ’s shutout on Tuesday with a whitewashing of his own, tossing a no-hitter over five innings. Torii gave the Warriors nothing, facing the minimum 15 batters without allowing a base runner while striking out 8 of 15.

Minnewaska 13 BOLD 1 Game 2 

Batting as the visiting team in game two, the Lakers continued to pound away at the Warrior pitching staff, piling up 13 runs in five innings as the Lakers pasted BOLD, 13-1.

In the top of the first inning the first six Minnewaska batters reached base, with five of them scoring, and the Lakers were well on their way to another victory.

Hunter Johnson was the third Johnson brother in a row to start on the mound for the Lakers. He didn’t let the family down, giving up just one run and one hit over four innings to get the win. 

Ryland Martin mopped up in style, striking out all three batters in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Minnewaska 7 Fergus Falls 1 

The long week for the Lakers ended on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Marthaler Field. Playing their sixth game in six days, Minnewaska welcomed Fergus Falls to their baseball stadium.

Minnewaska struck fast, scoring all seven runs in the first three innings.

Starting pitcher Alex Pantizke showed off the Lakers abundance of quality arms as he pitched four scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and no walks while stiking out three batters in his stint.

Nathan Dell and Ryland Martin worked the final three innings to preserve the win.  

Four Minnewaska batters had a pair of hits each, Torii Johnson, Dylan Alexander, Jack Majerus and Noah Jensen all had two hits, with Alexander and Jensen mixing in a double amongst their hits.

Another busy week lies ahead for the Lakers, with home games on Tuesday against Morris and on Friday against Paynesville. In between will be a doubleheader on Thursday at Montevideo.
