From May 24, 1912

The play “Galligher” was given by the high school seniors. The leading part, Galligher, was taken by Carl Nordstrom. Other characters in the play were Anna Horjem, Ruth Stenson, Evelyn Englund, Olga Nordstrom, Mary Horjem, Myrtle Olson, Magna Peterson, Oscar Thompson and George Fossen.

Peer Stromme, famous Norwegian lecturer, would speak in Starbuck, May 28.

A Height Social would be held at the school house by Gustav Engebretsons in New Prairie. Ladies put on your high heeled shoes and bring a lunch for two.

A bunch of young folks made use of the section hand car by riding on it to Glenwood to attend the home talent play.

100 YEARS AGO

From May 19, 1922

At a meeting at the Fron Lutheran Church Sunday after services, Rev. Koefod’s resignation was accepted to take effect Dec. 1. The following committee was appointed to look into the matter of securing a new pastor. They were Simon Swenson, John Hagestuen, Dr. O.V. Opheim, Henry Kirkwold, John Skaaden, Ole Overstad and Ed Chalenburg.

On Saturday, May 13, the juniors of Starbuck High School entertained the seniors of 22 and faculty at the annual Jr-Sr reception. The banquet was served at the Hotel Minnewaska, where the dining room was decorated in the class colors, purple and white. The president of the Jr. class, Otto Nordstrom, was toastmaster. The following was the program: Response – Grace Kirkwold, Class Will – Helen Kyvig, Class Prophecy – Dorothy Drackley, Developments – Supt. Jorstad, Jr. and Srs. – Dagney Luem, My Associates with the Jr. and Srs. – Lester Friedman, Goodbye to Seniors – Harriet Kirkwold.

Ole Olson and John Overson, who were appointed to look after getting a well for tourists camping ground and park, drilled a well 12-feet deep, struck good water, and the same evening installed a pump. 

90 YEARS AGO

From May 19, 1932

Contracts for a new school house to be built in District 95 were let at a meeting of the board. The lowest bidder was John Hilla of Donnelly.

The newly organized baseball club annexed their first victory of the season against the team from Hoffman. The score was four to two.

The annual meeting of the Starbuck Study Club was held at the home of Mrs. E.V. Erickson. Among the achievements of the year: presenting a home talent play “West of Broadway” on which the club realized $108.50; 38 Christmas stockings were prepared for needy children; $75 given toward the purchase of shades for the auditorium; presentation of a loving cup and two copies of Merle Potter’s “101 Best Stories of Minnesota” to the High School; planting of a Washington elm and three zinnia beds at the park.

Friday and Saturday were the warmest days so far this year. The thermometer registered 95 at noon on Saturday.

80 YEARS AGO

From May 21, 1942

Jeneva Skoglund was awarded the Louise M. Powell prize at the University of Minnesota Cap and Gown Day. It was awarded annually by the alumni association of the School of Nursing to two seniors who had attained the highest degree of efficiency in practical work.

According to a newspaper clipping received by Hans Skaret, his son, Sgt. Monnie, took part in a paratroop invasion at Fort Bragg, N.C. when 20 troopers bailed out into a cotton field.

Betty Ann Christenson of Cyrus became Queen of Pope County at Glenwood on Friday evening at the Old Tyme Program sponsored by the Pope County Historical Society.

Erling Linde had been engaged to teach SH School music at a special meeting of the school board.

Valedictory honors this year go to Helen Billehus and Salutatory honors to Diane Stewart at the High School this year.

Rose Marie Feigum would graduate from the Fairview Hospital School of Nursing May 25.

60 YEARS AGO

From May 17, 1962

Much property damage was reported as a result of a severe storm which struck about 10:30 Monday night. It appeared there were many twisters which dropped down damaging buildings at farm places, then skipped others. At the Joe Vilde farm all the buildings except the house were flattened. Considerable damages were reported at the following farms: Boyd Gandrud, Joe Gandrud, Clarence Cihlar, Raymond Barsness, Martin Barsness, Lundsetter brothers, Vernon Pederson, Julian Pederson and Fred Knutson.

“Sayonara” was the theme for the Jr.-Sr. Prom at the Starbuck High School. A banquet was served at midnight. Jack Douma was master of ceremonies for the evening. The program consisted of welcomes and a selection sung by the Buck-N-Aires.

Representatives of Pope County 4H Clubs gave a program on May 8. The three winning numbers were: a vocal number by Lavonne and Cheryl Jorgenson of the Cyrus Boosters club; a ukulele-vocal act by Mary Ann Teigen, Susan Smedstad, Robert Olson, Tommy Smedstad, Mary Lou Martinson, Kathy and Steven Dahlseng of the White Bear Lake club; and a baritone solo by John Morton of the Sedan Sparklers.

Saturday, May 20, Star Motor Company would have been in business under the same ownership for 25 years in Starbuck.

Dawn Sievert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sievert, would participate in the State Teenager Pageant August 4-5 at the Holiday Inn Central, Minneapolis.

40 YEARS AGO

From May 26, 1982

Rhonda Syverson and Kate Wahlquist were named the top two scholastic students in the class of 1982 at graduation ceremonies. Forty-two seniors graduated.

Dr. Ted Hammer was installed as president of the Starbuck Lions Club.

30 YEARS AGO

From May 20, 1992

Two Starbuck teachers, Audrey Amundson and Arnold Pederson, were honored at a retirement party at the Minnewaska House. Mrs. Amundson had been the science teacher for more than 20 years and Arne had been the math, physics and science teacher for more than 20 years.

Dr. Doug Prochaska announced his resignation of his practice at the Starbuck Clinic and Minnewaska Hospital, effective June 5.

Bill Pederson, manager of the CSS Region of EPE Technologies, a subsidiary of Merlin Gerin, Inc. in Los Angeles, California, was named as Manager of the Year by the company. Bill was the son of Conrad “Cornie” Pederson of Starbuck.

The Starbuck City Council heard a request by Minnewaska Lutheran Home to vacate a half block of Bingham Street between Sixth and Seventh Streets in order to allow for expansion of the nursing home. MLH administrator Mark Anderson told the council the home wanted to add more private rooms to the nursing center, move and enlarge its physical therapy department and add assisted living. The expansion would run between one and two million dollars.

Michael Moore would become the editor of the Starbuck Times, effective June 1. Moore would replace Beth Hendrickson who was resigning to spend more time with family. 

10 YEARS AGO

Good weather greeted people at the annual Lefse Dagen celebration. Warren and Gine Hagestuen got dressed up and were pictured in the Times. They helped show people around the buildings in the afternoon. Lefse, Varm Pulsa, Rommegrot and rhubarb pie were served in the Depot building.

Motorists on Highway 29 between Starbuck and Benson would experience delays when a road resurfacing project and detour began.

The Minnewaska girls’ golf team swept through conference play undefeated, closing out the regular season schedule  in New London-Spicer.
