2012 Laker Classic a success
July 12, 1962 – Clara Bjerke, county superintendent of schools, announced that she would file for re-election to that post. She was completing her first term in office.
A group of beginning swimmers were pictured in the Tribune during their lessons at the Glenwood beach. Participating in the training program were Gail Setter, with help from Barbara Carlson, Marlys DeBoer and lifeguards, Jerry Ogdahl and Luiana Lewis.
Women were among the top reported fisher-people in the area. Mrs. Earl Anderson, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, landed walleyes up to 6-1/2 pounds. Mrs. Harry Dankers, of Red Wing, was fishing with her husband when they caught crappies up to 2-1/2 pounds and blue gills at 2-1/4 pounds. Average walleyes were running at 2 to 2-1/2 pounds.
July 13, 1972 – Jack Morris, Pope County extension agent, received a promotion that recognized contributions toward the objectives of extension work.
Filings for the biennial primary election were underway. Only three county board positions were up for election on the county level. Incumbents in those positions were Mel Heggestad, Otto Solbrekken and Tommy Wrolson. On the state level, Delbert Anderson was expected to run for his house position and be challenged by Bill Shores of Murdock. Senator Cliff Benson, of Ortonville, was also expected to file for re-election. Rep. Bob Berglund was expected to be opposed in his bid for a second term in Congress by Jon Haaven of Alexandria.
New businessmen welcomed by the chamber of commerce included Jim Banhart, of Shorty’s Barber Shop, and Steve Nestor, of the Glenwood Theatre. Making the presentations was Chuck Bullock.
July 15, 1982 – Representatives of the city of Glenwood and Glenwood Township “fine tuned” plans for the construction of a sewage treatment facility in the township.
Orin Flom, retired mail carrier, received a gold membership card from the Postal Carriers’ Union. Gil Voerding presented the card to Flom, who had carried mail for 42 years through the Glenwood office and had belonged to the union for 50 years.
Ethel Christenson, of Glenwood, was one of 37 adults who received their high school equivalency (GED) certificates at ceremonies at the technical school in Granite Falls. Christenson was also one of the six in the group over the age of 60.
Five county 4-Hers won state fair trips during the annual Demonstration Day. They were JoAnn Opdahl, of the Wayside Club; Chris Morris, Kathy Morris and Patrick Morris, of the Pleasant Hill Troopers; and Carolyn Bryce, of the Lakeview Club.
July 13, 1992 – Fifty Pope County employees, who were members of the Public and Law Enforcement Teamsters Local No. 320, voted to strike.
Construction began on a $535,257 project to improve Highway 28 from the Glenwood city limits east to the Pope County line.
The Glenwood City Commission decided that a zoning change request should be submitted instead as a planned unit development, delaying, for a while at least, a proposal for a 52-unit development on South Lakeshore Drive.
Eric W. Halvorson, 40, was found guilty by a jury of two counts of kidnapping.
Pictured in the Tribune was Linda Juusola explaining how to treat injured swimmers to an intermediate swim class at Minnewaska Area High School. The swimming program offered through the community education program at MAHS had a mushroom effect. The number of participants in swimming lessons and other pool programs had grown rapidly.
July 15, 2002 – Severe storms caused flash flooding in parts of Glenwood, while high winds meant serious crop and farm equipment damage in the rest of the county. Dave Perryman said, “We figured we had somewhere between 5 and 5-1/2 inches of rain within 20-25 minutes.”
Mike Juvrud, a former Minnewaska Township treasurer, plead guilty to two of the 13 felony counts against him in Pope County District Court and was facing up to 30 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine. He was charged with swindling about $14,000 from the township since being elected as township treasurer in March 2001.
July 16, 2012 – Officials from the Department of Natural Resources were at the DNR landing near Glenwood on Lake Minnewaska last week, checking boats and educating boaters about ways to stop the spread of invasive species like Eurasian milfoil and zebra mussels.
Outgoing Glenwood Rotary President John R. Stone handed over the gavel to incoming president Kristi Mertens at a recent meeting of the Glenwood Rotary. The new board was also named at the meeting. Board members were pictured in the Tribune, they included Tim Douglass, Ron Cin, Geri Krueger, Mike Claunch, Kristi Mertens, Rod Olson, John R. Stone, Jeffery Ozanne, Dave Peterson and Kevin Klimek.
Troy Lien of Glenwood placed first in Machine & Small Engine Mechanics as part of the 48th Annual National Skills USA Championships. Thirteen student competitors from Alexandria Technical & Community College attended this conference in Kansas City, Mo., June 25-28.
Xcel Energy sponsored the winning team at the 2012 Laker Classic. The team consisting of Casey Vangsness, Emily Roering, Pat Roering and Sarah Roering, shot a 20-under par 52. Sunny skies and warm temperatures made for a perfect day on the golf course. Nearly $16,000 was raised thanks to the generosity of participants. The money raised would financially assist with supply, equipment and special project purchases for MAHS activities.
