From July 12, 1912

Clara Knutson, Dena Aslakson, Hannah Engebretson, Enger Landmark, and Selma Ranum were in Starbuck and vicinity over Sunday, returning to summer school at Glenwood Monday morning. The Times reporter saw Mr. Carl Knutson with these pedagogic persons loaded all into a single buggy as he left town for Langei Saturday evening and wondered if the vehicle would stand it. It appeared there was some trepidation on their part also, for when they came back Monday morning, a part of them was in a double rig and the help of Mr. Emil Dokken had been secured to convey the other part, and the suitcases, and so forth.

The brick layers finished their work on the new hospital Saturday and went Monday with Emil Larson to Kensington to work on the new school building there.
The storm of Monday was accompanied by much wind, which did a great deal of damage in this vicinity. At the Ole Lorvig farm, the barn was badly twisted and Bennie Smedstad lost both the barn and windmill.
E.E. Lobeck was nominated for governor on the Prohibition ticket at the State Convention held last week in St. Paul.

A deal was made this week by which the drug store and W.R. Case residence was sold to George C. Arneson of Montevideo. Mr. R.F. Case came to Starbuck in 1898 and purchased the drug business from O.J. Johnson. For seven years his brother-in-law, L.B. Stocking, was in partnership with his father ever since. The Cases were moving to California where they own a chicken and fruit ranch.
The Pope County Health Association would have a demonstrating nurse in Pope County for one week in August. Miss Olivia Peterson would speak and show moving pictures in all sections of the county. A special generator attached to the moving picture machine permitted not only sufficient electricity to show motion pictures, but also permitted the lighting of buildings or halls where pictures were to be shown.
90 YEARS AGO
From July 14, 1932
Damage from a wind gust in Starbuck resulted in tearing down the massive chimney on the Starbuck school house, uprooting and snapping trees over the entire village and tearing down telephone poles.
Two silos on the Hans Gorder farm, one mile west of Starbuck, was wrecked. Emil Anderson’s barn in eastern Minnewaska was twisted.
Catching fire from a passing auto while on the trunk highway south of Starbuck, a load of hay and rack belonging to A.J. Nordberg, Blue Mounds farmer, were entirely destroyed. Those riding on the load were Mr. Nordberg, Arthur, his son, Oluf Smedstad and Grant Thompson.
Talking pictures at the DuGlada Theatre! Mssr’s. Munford and Airy of Minneapolis had leased the DuGlada Theatre and would be showing their first talking picture, The Mystery Train, Sunday evening, July 17, 1932.

Thirteen Starbuck men were among those from Pope County who would be inducted July 23. They were: Julius Haugen, Gordon Finstad, Warren Baukol, Arlane T. Brandvold, Elmer T. Torgerson, C. Tilman Torgerson, Marvin A. Haugen, Norman Hagen, Ole B. Swenson, Clifford E. Hippe, Ralph B. Norland, Palvin M. Lukken and Archie Otteson.
The Barsness Lutheran Church would celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding July 19.
John Merrill received his commission last week as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army of the United States. At the present time, he was working on the farm of his parents in Glenwood Township.
Relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Stadsvold July 10 to honor them on their 25th wedding anniversary. They had one daughter, Lillian.

Avonell Engebretson, honor student of the May graduating class at the Cyrus school, enrolled at the Minnesota School of Business this week for a course as medical secretary-technician.
LouAnn Barsness entertained some girls at her home in honor of her ninth birthday and Mary Kathleen Roiland celebrated her sixth birthday Monday.

A community dinner was held at the Boyd Bredeson home on the Fourth of July to help Gary celebrate his fourth birthday.
The Allan Hagestuens entertained a group on Friday in honor of Janet’s first birthday.
Births: A son, Jerald Merlin, to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Aaberg July 7; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Opdahl July 6.
There would be a confirmation service at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Cyrus Sunday and at Minnewaska Church in Starbuck. Confirmed at St. Petri would be David Boyer, Danny Hovendick, Barbara Jenson, Cheryl Jergenson, Susan Larson, Linda Mix, Cheryl Tollefson and Mary Wiger. Confirmed at Minnewaska would be Lorraine Brown, Dennis Knutson, Shirley Olson, Bonnie Rasmusen and Ruth Sorensen.

Rev. John Maim installed as pastor of Cyrus church.
Margery Burns, Milan, announced her candidacy for the office of State Senator for district 15.
The Nora Church would observe their 100th anniversary.
Arnold Opdahl, Starbuck, had been named secretary of the Pope County Historical Society to replace Reuben Eiden, who had resigned after serving in that position for the past 31 years.

A Lowry man was charged with second degree murder after an incident that occurred while the man was babysitting. An eleven-month-old was brought to the Starbuck District Hospital with a blow to the head that caused him to be pronounced dead on arrival. The 18-year-old male who was watching the child said in his voluntary statement to the Pope County Sheriff’s Department that when the child wouldn’t stop crying and he saw the face of someone he recently had an altercation with.
President Clifford Mork of the Lowry State Bank was on hand during the Expansion-Remodeling Open House at the financial facility to greet all visitors.

From July 15, 1992
Andre Fuhrman who lived near Lake Minnewaska during the summer months had completed her four-book series on Princess Minnewaska. Fuhrman wrote children’s stories and would be hosting Children’s Hour at the First National Bank park on July 16.
A Starbuck native and her husband were instantly killed when the Cessna 172 they were flying collided with another Cessna airplane over Interstate 94 just east of downtown St. Paul as both planes were preparing to land at Holman Airport.
In the election of District #614 officers for the 92-93 year, the following were elected, all by unanimous ballot: chairman – Tom Beuckens, vice chair – Bruce Bastin, clerk – Vicki Bösl, and treasurer – David Thompson.
Births: A daughter, Laura Katherine, to Fred and Mary Bucher of Maple Grove July 1; a daughter, MacKenzie Jo, to Marla and Ernie Watson July 9.
West Lake Johanna Church of rural Brooten would celebrate their 125th anniversary August 22-23.

Among those serving as lifeguards at the Starbuck beach for the summer were: Kylie Hyland, Jenna Johnshoy, Jenny Johnsrud, Brittany Tostenson, Joe Swartz, Melissa Koos, Cal Weispfennig, Breeana Zaic and Shanna Danielson.
Come mid to late September CSAH 3 would have its new bridge in place. The bridge was damaged last year in an April rainstorm which fell on frozen soil. Heavy runoff into the west fork of the Chippewa River created high water flows that were more than the bridge supports could handle. The new bridge had a wider span of 73 feet and was five feet higher than the previous bridge
The Minnewaska Area Showstoppers would present “Some Enchanted Evening…The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein” at three performances during Waterama week.

Peddler Dan’s opened for business in Starbuck on Saturday, July 21. Owner Dan Jahn was excited to be part of the Starbuck community. Peddler Dan’s was a discount store that would sell tools, toys, tackle, gift bags and ladies things just to name a few.
The group trying to find money to save the old hospital building told the Starbuck City Council in their regular meeting on July 9 that they were working on getting grants, but having trouble finding a use for the building if it were to be saved.
At the District 1 Sons of Norway biennial convention at St. Cloud in June the local Mjosen Lodge delegation was awarded the 2010 Lodge of the Year for small lodges in District 1. The award is based on lodge activities and growth. Rose Meade, Pauline Hoffman and Sue and Jerry Wright attended the convention.
