Eberhart Arneson brought a load of live porkers to Glenwood the latter part of the week.

A commodious coal shed had recently been erected at New Prairie and the Elevator Company intended to handle all kinds of coal in the coming year.

In this issue of the paper, Prof. Munck had written an interesting letter on his canoe trip to ST. Paul. Launching the canoe on the Chippewa River about ten miles west of town and following it until it reached the Minnesota River and thence to St. Paul. The trip took ten days and they estimated they had gone 600 miles.

Carl N. Nelson last week traded his farm in Blue Mounds for a grain elevator in Mohall, North Dakota.

V.F. Orth, formerly a grain buyer at Alberta and Morris, had been engaged by the Farmer’s Elevator Co. as manager of their elevator for the coming year.

Notice: All ladies interested in a hospital auxiliary would meet at the Minnewaska Hospital, Saturday evening, July 29, for the purpose of perfecting an organization. C.R. Christenson.

The Immanuel Congregation would celebrate their Golden Jubilee and also dedicate the new church next Sunday.

Miss Elaine Gaader, daughter of Mr. S.L. Gaader, graduated in June from McPhail School of Music. Miss Gaader now had a private class in music in Minneapolis. Her name appeared as one of the artists in the radio program in the Tribune on July 24.

Larson Bros., local contractors had a crew of men working on the school house, repairing the damage done by the storm a few weeks ago. A new chimney was being erected and the large hole in the east roof repaired.

Wednesday Market: wheat no. 1 – 41¢, oats – 12¢, barley – 15 to 19¢, durum – 32¢, flax – 78¢, rye – 17¢, eggs – 10¢ dozen, sweet cream – 17¢, sour cream – 15¢.

The School Orchestra of Dist. 37 motored to Terrace Sunday evening where they played several selections at a Young People’s program in the Terrace church. The following were members of the orchestra: clarinets – Arlane Brandvold, Maurice Anderson, Boya Bredeson; violin – Edith Anderson; cornet – Clayton Billehus; trombones – Delbert Anderson. They were accompanied by Mrs. A.G.J. Anderson at the piano.

Roy O. Evans was reported missing in action, according to a letter received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Evans last week from the War Department. He had not been heard from since the fall of Corrigidor May 7.

An accident which might have been very serious took place near Milton Sheldons on the Starbuck-Glenwood road at 12:30 on Tuesday of last week when a pickup truck driven by Eugene Ophaug collided with a horse belonging to Milton Sheldon. The horse was killed on impact. Fortunately, neither Mr. Ophaug or his wife, who was with him, were hurt, but both were badly shaken up.

A group of children and their mothers were entertained at the Bob DuBois home Thursday in honor of Joy’s sixth birthday.

Stan Behl, service sales manager for Star Motors Co., had been presented the first annual Golden Circle Award by Ford Division of Ford Motor Co. for outstanding his managerial duties.

David Tank, local high school basketball coach fore the past two years, announced his resignation. He accepted a position with the Anoka high school as assistant varsity coach.

Diane Berge, daughter of Arnold Berge of Starbuck, the Lake Region Honey Queen, came in second in competing for the title of Minnesota Honey Queen at the Minnesota Beekeeper’s convention held in Alexandria. Betty Blatnik of Spring Valley was named queen.

Five area girls were candidates for Waterama queen Sunday evening. They were Kathryn Aaberg, Mara Totushek, Jane DuBois, Mary Stadsvold and Susan LaQua.

Supt. Janisch announced that Mrs. Maurice Amundson had been hired to teach one of the first grade classes for the year 1972-73. She replaced Mrs. Carlquist who resigned last May.

Nora Lutheran Church of rural Kensington would celebrate its 100th anniversary on the weekend of August 4-6.

The Starbuck District #614 Board of Education met at district offices and re-organized for the 1982-83 term. The meeting marked the initial meeting for three new board members, elected to their positions in May. The new members were Harold Hagen, Barb Lamski and Nancy Olson. Jackie Johnsrud was re-elected as chairman of the board.

Ruth Anderson of Starbuck was crowned the 1981 Waterama Queen. Princesses were Patricia Morgan and Carol Bowen, both of Glenwood.

Due to the financial crisis the city of Starbuck was experiencing, city council members terminated the position of Community Developer, which was presently held by Tom Kinn, effective July 31.

Teresa Wencil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Wencil of Glenwood, was crowned 1992 Glenwood Waterama Queen Sunday evening. April Moller was named First Princess while Lori Listug received Second Princess honors. Miss Congeniality selected was Ann Guggisberg.

Paul A. Lamski, son of John R. Lamski of Starbuck, and Barb Booth of Alexandria, had completed a US Air Force ROTC field training encampment at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington.

Barb Hesse and Pat Olson were honored by the CMST school board for their volunteer work on behalf of the school recently.

Glacial Lakes State Park had some new improvements at the park, the most obvious being a 32-foot-long pier with a 30-foot wide “T” at the end is handicapped accessible and mostly geared for kids. The pier was assembled on the ice the previous winter.

Three Starbuck Elementary classmates and graduates of Minnewaska Area High School took all three top positions in the Glenwood Waterama Queen pageant. Megan Nygaard was selected Waterama Queen while Ashley Wink was named first princess and Shana Danielson was named second princess.

The 116th annual Pope County Free Fair would open on Wednesday at the Pope County Fairgrounds in Glenwood. Like past years, the fair would include food, rides, livestock and more. This year’s fair would mean a little more to anyone who had participated in, volunteered for or was connected in any way to the 4-H program because 4-H would be celebrating its 100th birthday.

A 40-year-old Starbuck man died after his vehicle rolled over off Highway 114 near Holmes City in Douglas County.

A five-month-old boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 29 south of Starbuck in Pope County. The head-on crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 29 and Pope County Road 41.

At a special meeting, the board of education of Minnewaska Area Schools named Todd Beecher head basketball coach for the 2012-2013 school year. Beecher was one of three candidates interviewed by the activities committee of district July 16.
