From August 9, 1912
Confirmation services were held at Fron church last Sunday and ten young people were confirmed. They were Milleanna Englund, Cora Fossen, Cora Holte, Clara Lysgaard, Mabel Swensrud, Anna Westberg, Syver Aaberg, Edwin Stockland, Martin Rorvig and Norman Lund.
Aage Peterson returned Monday from his summer trip to his native land and birth place near Stenkjer, Norway.
100 YEARS AGO
From August 4, 1922
The village council requested that the following be published: The council, upon repeated petition from the business men and citizens of Starbuck, decided to put on an adequate police force to check the indecent behavior of some boys and girls under eighteen years of age and to safeguard against the entry of bandits and yeggs into the town. Upon careful deliberation, they decided to get four men to work in two shifts, two to the shift, two being on duty from 8 o’clock in the evening to 1 o’clock a.m. and the other two to work from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Miss Edna Wollan of Glenwood was here to try to interest some of the local girls in forming a girls’ basketball team. The road running north from Starbuck is in such bad shape it’s almost impassible. It seems to be no one’s place to look after it and the consequence is it’s almost always in a dangerous condition. The people who must travel on it have a right to expect it to be better taken care of.

Funeral services for Melvin Dullum were held Wednesday afternoon at the Indherred church. Rev. Forde conducted the service in Norwegian and Rev. Dalager assisted him, using the English language. H.K. Myking leased the Ove Johnson building on Wednesday and expects to go into business here. He operated a store at Wildrose, N.D., for about 6 years.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Leonard Pederson, a well known Starbuck lady who died Thursday, were held last Monday, August 8th, at 1 p.m. at the Pederson Home in Starbuck and at 2 o’clock in the Fron church. Rev. M. Casper Johnshoy officiated. The pallbearers were six of Mr. Pederson’s brothers, namely, George, Julian, Melvin, Bert, Oliver, and Hartvig Pederson.

Lowell Knudson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Knudson of this city and one of Benon’s national Guardsmen has been promoted to Corporal. Mr. Knudson is the son-in -law of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hanson of Starbuck.
Dorvan Skoglund, who is taking a special course in Civilian Flying at the Alexandria Airport made his first solo flight this week.
Lt. Mark Theodore Kasper, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Kasper of Lowry received the Silver Wings of the Army Air Force at Kelly Field, Texas, on August 5th.

Funeral Services for Lee Lund were held at the East Zion Lutheran Church Friday afternoon. He is survived by his wife and five children: Eldon, Mrs. Walter (Elaine) Hippe, Lorne of Starbuck, Mrs. Paul (Verna) Rother of St. Paul and Lavon at home
Mrs. Lloyd Landmark entertained a few children and their mothers at the park Thursday afternoon for Gary’s 7th birthday.
Gerdes Billehaus and Kathryn Lorvig, both of Starbuck, graduated at Concordia College in Moorhead Aug. 1.
Funeral services for Marvin Hoverud, 43, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church on August 1. He is survived by 1 sister, Marie of Sauk Centre, and four brothers, his twin Henry, Albert, Clarence, and Clifford.

The heavy rains since last spring have raised the level of lake Minnewaska 15 inches, The gauge registers 3.08 over the spillway at Starbuck.
Mr. George Matthews, distinguished Negro tenor soloist, will appear to both worship services in Fron Lutheran church on Sunday morning, August 12th, at 8 and 10 a.m. He will bring an unusual program of inspirational music reinforced by the World of God at these two services.
Morris phone building moved, no services loss. Six operators remained at their switchboards for the hour-long ride. The 30 by 40-foot brick building was moved 90 feet from the front to the rear of the lot.

Greg Starns, coach at Cyrus High School this past year, has been hired by the Starbuck school system, as basketball coach to replace David Tank who recently resigned. He will also be the physical education teacher.
Kayo Aslagson, son of the Harry Aslagsons, Starbuck, has accepted a teaching position at the Kimball high school system.
Five area students have been accepted at UMM, Morris. From the Starbuck vicinity they are; Scott Bartlett, Jerry DeGier, Andrew Pederson and Richard Zink have enrolled while from Cyrus, Lynn Solvie will be a student at UMM.
Star Motor Co. of Starbuck has been selected as one of the nation’s outstanding Ford dealerships and has received the Ford Motor Co. Distinguished Achievement Award in special ceremonies held at Alexandria last week. Of the forty-some dealers present, only three dealers received the award.
Sarah Aune, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Aune, has accepted a teaching position at the Willow River High School. She will teach business education.

Mark Dayton, DFL-endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate, will speak at a rural rally and hog roast August 15 at Runestone Park near Kensington. Warren Spannaus, DFL-endorsed candidate for governor, and Jim Nichols and Gene Wenstrom, DFL candidates for the U.S. Congress, will also attend the rally and hog roast.

As a community project the Starbuck Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Allen Bros. Circus in Starbuck on Monday, August 17th behind Starbuck Elementary, with performances at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
4-H’ers from five counties have been practicing judging cows together this summer – and their practices paid off on Monday at the Swift County Dairy Judging Contest. In the junior division, the team from Pope County placed first overall.
Camden State Park hosts 9th annual wildlife art exhibit. Ten regional wildlife artists will be exhibiting and selling their work under the shade of ample and basswood trees in the north picnic area.

A salute to agriculture and old time tractors called Country Day will be held Saturday, August 17 in Starbuck with a long list of events on the schedule.
Olabode Adesina Opeseitan “Bode” for short, is in Pope County as part of a rural Minnesota visit during a four-month stay in the United States. Bode is deputy editor of the Nigerian Tribune and also the paper’s Internet editor. He is one of nine fellows in the World Press Institute which brings journalists from around the world to learn about the United States.
Dan Erickson, the son of Harry and Ada Erickson of Starbuck, was awarded the Dairy Sanitarian Award by the international Association of Food Protection. The award recognizes the recipient for excellence in public service and achievement in the profession of dairy sanitarian.

Dragon Boat Festival activities filled last weekend with fun for people of all ages. The Prairie Lakes Co-op team posed with their trophy after winning this year’s Dragon Boat races.
Bridge replacement project in Starbuck begins Aug. 20. Motorists on Highway 29 will experience delays when a bridge replacement project begins Monday, Aug. 20, over Outlet Creek.
Private boat launch to be built for South Pointe RV Park patrons. The proposed boat launch is located roughly between Monte Beach Drive and South Lakeshore Drive on the south shoreline of lake Minnewaska.
