The hospital patients are doing well. Ross Bloom of Morris went home last Friday. Mrs. Polley of Hancock is rapidly recovering. Mr. Moen of Glenwood is gaining and Mrs. Steele of Coleraine, also is improving. There were two operations Wednesday, one was upon Mrs. Stoen of Villard and the other was Mrs. Larson of Langhei.
A remarkable and unique gathering was held at the manse at Indherred Friday. It was an Old Ladies’ Party at which there was no one under sixty winters. Old Grandma Troen, being 88, had the seat of honor.

Miss Ausilgu Sorenson concluded her visit at the Forde home on Tuesday, and left for Grand Forks, where she resides.
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Johnson, Mr and Mrs. Albert Gorder and Agnes of Morris returned Tuesday from a trip to Itasca State Park, Walker, Brainard and Little Falls.
Mrs. A. R. Scheutz, Mrs. Ed Olson, Mrs. J. A. Overson, Miss Anna Tranae and Miss Bertha Nordstrom were pleasantly entertained for coffee by Miss Olga Nordstrom Saturday afternoon.

There is an increase of three pupils in the high school and a decrease of seven in the grades in the Starbuck School this year. There are 173 in the grades and 115 in the high school. Due to the large number of freshman and sophomores it has become necessary to hire a part time teacher. Claremont Gorder has been hired at a salary of $60.00 a month. The salary for substitute teachers this year will be $3.00 a day.
A surprise farewell party was held for Mrs. Ole Sando on Monday. She plans to move to Rosholt, S. D. to make a home with her son Melvin.
Funeral services for Mrs. Guro Torgerson were held at the East Zion church on Saturday, Rev. K. R. Palmer officiating. She is survived by the sons, Torgy of Starbuck; Tom of Langhei; Nick of Rolling Forks; and one daughter, Mrs. Edward Hoff of Superior, Wisconsin.
Harris Engebretson, local football coach, says the football prospects look rather serious this fall, with the heaviest schedule since the origin of football in Starbuck.

David Wollan, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Wollan, has been granted a Gold Star Merit Award by the Cal-Aero Flying School, Ontario, Canada and his name has been inscribed in the Academy Hall of Fame in recognition of having completed the course in flying training without an accident of any kind.
Harold Pfiffners of Warren, Minn., arrived here last week to take over the local Starbuck Oil bulk station which has been operated by Harold Vold for the past two years. Mr. Vold left last week for Idaho to be employed in defense work.
Isaac, 3-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ingolf Kamrud, was run over by a trailer loaded with fence posts on Friday afternoon last week, but fortunately was not seriously injured. He was riding with the hired man on the trailer, when the team made a start and he fell off. Both wheels on one side of the rubber-tired trailer passed over his body. Examination revealed no broken bones.

There were 385 pupils enrolled in Starbuck Public school for the year 1952-1853.
Mons Ness, 74, prominent New Prairie resident, passed away on Thursday at the Minnewaska Hospital.
Wedding vows were exchanged Sunday at Hillsboro, N. D., by Muriel Olson and Paul Hoplin of Lowry.
S/Sgt. Marvin Maanum received his discharge from the Air Force at Wichita, Kansas last week.
Before an alter of gladiola and garden flowers at West Zion Lutheran church, Donna Erickson became the bride of Marvin Braaten Saturday.
Miss Clara Dahl arrived last week from Portland, Oregon from a week visit at the Thomas Dahl home and other relatives.

All weeds on the acreage diverted under the Feed Grain and Wheat Stabilization Programs must be sprayed, mowed, disced, or plowed under by September 1. The request comes from the County ASC Committee who is responsible for the administration of these programs. C. H. Bennett, the County Chairman, warns that if weeds on the designated diverted acres are not timely controlled, no further payments shall be made for the farm and any payments previous made shall be refunded.
Small Grain harvest is about complete in this area. Corn and soybeans look fair to good but need more moisture. Corn is in the dough stage, two weeks behind in development. Some soybeans are turning yellow.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Berg will observe their silver wedding anniversary at an open house at the Fron Lutheran church at Starbuck on September 2, from 2 to 5 p.m. No cards have been issued. All relatives and friends are cordially invited.

For the second year in a row, enrollment at the Starbuck school has declined. Unofficial figures shows 565 students enrolled while last year the count was in the neighborhood of 600. Two years ago it was 625.
A county-wide solid waste meeting held last Wednesday in the courthouse, with representatives from at least 10 townships and 4 incorporate municipalities in attendance, appeared to solve little regarding this area’s solid waste problem. Nevertheless most who attended left with a better understanding of what has to be done regarding solid waste management and what is the present status of solid waste management in this area.
Plans are being made for a ‘half-way house’ somewhere in this part of Minnesota with a strong possibility it will be located in Glenwood. A group of interested citizens met at the Glenwood Lutheran Church Thursday evening under the direction of Robert Brandel, director of the Pope County Family Service Department to discuss and expedite a half-way house for this area.

A “SHINY” RED APPLE helps the two newest additions to the Starbuck district #614 teachers ranks prepare for the start of another term. Mr. Dale Hanson will be the senior high school English instructor plus will be the assistant girls’ volleyball coach and head girls’ and boys’ track coach. Cautiously debating whether or not to take the apple is Miss Debbie Mensing, who will be the new Learning Disability [LD] teacher.
A special meeting of the City Council was held last Monday evening for the purpose of conducting hearings on street improvements on John Street to 9th Street, and East 6th Street and Moore Street.
Minnewaska Lutheran Home Aux. Group III is sponsoring the 3rd Art Show by the Glacial Ridge Artists to be held Sept. 9th at the Starbuck Senior Citizens Center from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The painting to be given away is a watercolor by Emma Erickson.

Three members of the Adult Mental Health Advisory committee met with the county board to give an update of what they consider needs for mental health in the county and resolutions to solve the situation. It was stressed during the presentation that the county could have two providers for those needed mental health services.
To enlighten the students about the daily news highlights of international and national interest is the main reason why the Minnewaska Area High School board approved the airing of Channel One.
A special meeting of the Starbuck City Council was held Monday evening, August 24 for the purpose of, first, holding a public hearing on the Water Improvement proposal; and secondly, to approve the preliminary 1993 budget. The public hearing portion of the meeting was held because it is a requirement of the Small Cities Grant Application, and since no one was present for this public hearing, the meeting moved on to review the approval of the budget for the coming year.

It was called “The Dig” and it is taking place on the Leland Pederson place on the west end of Pelican Lake. What people are digging for are traces of encampments of Germans and Norwegians dating back to the time frame between 1080 A.D. and 1215 A.D.
Teacher Rich Bond was pictured at the Starbuck Elementary School Monday going through a few things to get ready for school next Tuesday. Teachers were back at school Tuesday through Thursday for workshops and to get their classrooms ready for next Tuesday morning.
Alexandria Technical College hosted its third annual tuition-free science, technology and engineering camp for girls this summer. The purpose of the camp is to expose young women to the possibilities of a career in the manufacturing early enough to influence their choices of math, science and technology courses.

The Starbuck Lions Club has been around since 1956. Many members have had an impact on the community of Starbuck over the years with two longstanding members in particular, Dr. Don Bucher and Earl Rundgren. Rundgren and Dr. Bucher were recognized with an award for their many years of serving the community as a Starbuck Lions member on August 24 by outgoing president Dalen Gosseling and incoming president Greg Rapp.
What was a standing pool of water after the August 1, 2011 storm and high water levels. Al and his wife Diane decided to clear out the water and plant wildflowers. The Sheldons have had people stop by and check out the wildflowers, some even said they were going to plant their own wildflower gardens.
Free food…really? Really. No strings, no hoops, no forms, no problem! All kids attending Minnewaska area schools, grades kindergarten through seniors, now have the option to start their day off right with a full, free breakfast.
