From August 2, 1912
Ole Berg and Miss Josie Hanson were married at Glenwood on Wednesday and returning to Starbuck, the bridal party held the wedding festivities in the town hall and supper being served at Johnson’s restaurant.
One of the settlers of this region and his wife were honored by their friends last Sunday, the occasion was the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr, and Mrs. Peter E. Barsness. Rev. Koefod was the speaker of the day and the toastmaster was M. Wollan. Iver J. Lee, T.T. and T. O. Ofsthun, Carl N. Nelson. Mayor Shipstead and Dr. Eberlin also made appropriate speeches.
Bennie Hegg and party broke the record last Tuesday evening by catching 29 large pike in one hour.

The dedication services and fifty year festival held in the new brick church in Immanuel Church Sunday was a great success and will be remembered by the congregation.
Dr. L.L. Gibbon left last week for San Francisco with his family. He is a member of the O.R.C. and was ordered to report for duty August 1.
The Misses Dagny Gorder, Alma Dahl, Ruth Svenning, Magdalena Aslakson, Anna Tangen, Helen Larson, Helen Foelschow, Caroline Lee, Nora Bagne, Borghild Arneson, and Mrs. H. L. Larson are camping at the Fossen-Eidberg cottage this week.
Mrs. Will Cocking and two sons of Centralia, Wash. are visiting at the home of her brother, Elmer Wesen.

The Hospital Aux. had their annual meeting on Monday. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs. Alfred Gorder; vice president, Mrs. A.P. Norby; and Mrs. William Peterson was re-elected treasurer. The aux. now has 31 members.

That the men have nothing on the ladies when it comes to doing emergency war work was proved Monday evening when three Starbuck women went out to Iver Reveling’s farm and shocked up 12 acres of flax. They are Agnes Tollefson, Mrs. John Moan and Miss Alice Flagstead. Mrs. Amry J. Stensby of Cyrus has filed for County Superintendent of Schools. Mary has taught school in rural schools of Meeker and Pope Counties and one year in the Cyrus Consolidated School. She served as Cyrus Postmaster from 1919 to 1935.

Connie Chevalier, seven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Chevalier of Benson, was rushed to Minneapolis for eye surgery Wednesday, after being bitten in the eye by a farm dog near their cabin on south shore Lake Minnewaska. Connie; her sister Carrie, 8, and Cathy Thompson from Minneapolis were attacked by the dog as they entered a field to hold a picnic. Both Carrie and Connie were treated by a Glenwood physician, who suggested that the younger girl be taken to Minneapolis for treatment. Fortunately, H.G. Thompson, father of Cathy, and next door cabin owner to the Chevaliers, had a private plane, and flew Connie immediately to Minneapolis.

Mr. Joe Merrill of Glenwood was the third and last candidate to file for the State Representative post in district 15A. The newly formed district includes all of Pope, most of Stevens, and about half of Swift counties.
Mara Totushek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Totushek of Starbuck, was named as first princess of Glenwood’s Waterama Sunday evening. She was one of the four Starbuck girls to participate, along with one from Lowry.

Starbuck’s Bob Hagert received congratulations from his teammates following his third quarter interception in the Minnesota High School All Star Football game last Saturday evening at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. Hagert’s heads up play was not enough to overcome the metro team, who went on to claim a 24-14 victory over the Out-State team. Other players included Jeff Sajdak [31] of Grand Marais and Todd DeBates [23] of Stewartville.
The “Velkommen” community, Starbuck, officially opened its formal campaign to welcome all visitors and passers-by to attend its Centennial from June 25 through July 4 of 1983. The attractive sign was placed on the community signs at the four entrances to Starbuck by the Minnesota Highway Department. Meetings and plans for the gala event are well underway, with a majority of the community actively involved in one or more of the various projects.

Therewas a mixed reaction Thursday night, July 30, at a public hearing held at the Pope County Courthouse regarding the re-forming for a county-wide House and Redevelopment Authority. Township officials who were present from Hoff and Rolling Forks townships expressed concern over rising taxes and felt the HRA would benefit residents in those townships very little if at all, yet they would be taxed equally with all other taxing entities.
A total of $4,540,048 has been distributed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources of 67 Minnesota counties, according to DNR Commissioner Rod Sando. “Each year, the DNR makes a significant contribution to the budgets of counties throughout the state, through the in-lieu-of-tax payments.” Sando said. “Our partnership with the counties and local governments are important to the DNR.”

Ajournalist from Nigeria is finding that Americans are warmer and kinder than the stereotype. Olabode Adesina Opeseitan “Bode” for short, is in Pope County this week as part of a rural Minnesota visit during a four-month stay in the United States. Bode is the deputy editor of the Nigerian Tribune and also the paper’s internet editor. Bodes visits so far included a trip to the Pope County Fair and the Demolition Derby which he cannot frankly understand. “I think I am going to write a story about it,” he said.
Dan Erickson, the son of Harry and Ada Erickson of Starbuck, was awarded the Dairy Sanitarian Award by the International Association of Food Protection.
A 16-year-old juvenile was apprehended early Sunday and appeared in court Monday for his alleged role in a burglary at the Cenex C-Store. According to Starbuck Police Chief Bruce Gilbertson, the alarm at the store went off at 4:26 a.m. Sunday. Police are also investigating an attempted burglary at Samuelson’s Drug Store the week before which may be related to the C-Store break-in.

Seventy-six families from around the state, one from each county, have been named a “2012 Farm Family of the Year” by the University of Minnesota. The Arne Stoen family was chosen as Pope County’s 2012 Farm Family of the year. Arne Stoen is a 4th generation farmer who began farming on his grandfather’s homestead in 1956. When he first began, his operation had grain, cattle, hay, dairy, feeder cattle and hogs. Along the way he added Suffolk sheep.
