Homecoming game won with school-record 41-yard field goal
Sept. 20, 1962 – An 18-month-old Starbuck boy died as a result of drowning in Lake Minnewaska. His body was found by his father after he was playing in the family’s yard and disappeared.
Three Glenwood Soo Line employees came close to death when a run-away string of 55 cars, most of them loaded with lumber, went on a rampage. The Tribune reported, “Because Sonny Johnson had a ‘feeling,’ Marv Vollrath and Wylie Bogie are alive today.” Nine cars were eventually damaged or derailed in the incident.
The starting line-up for the Glenwood High School football team in the homecoming game against the Morris Tigers included Dave Wedum, Steve Olson, Dave Chan, Paul Swenson, Ralph Femrite, Curt Peterson, Ken Kuhns, Lyle MacIver, Dennis Sager, Bill Malyon and Steven Kettells.
Sept. 28, 1972 – Glenwood’s first Our Little Miss pageant honored the following winners in one category or another: Our Little Miss Susan Green, Kate Wahlquist, Kristen Bremseth, Debbie Frank, Miss La Petite Michelle Barsness, Jodi Blair and Christi Cooley.
The District No. 612 Board of Education OKd a tax levy of $518,356 to continue the business of operating the Glenwood/Lowry schools. The new tax levy was 13.3 percent higher than the previous years. A two-year wage and fringe benefits package for the teachers of the system was also approved by the board. Total increase over the two years amounted to 8.6 percent.
The Rev. Harold Ward was set to arrive as pastor of Glenwood Lutheran Church. He would come to Glenwood from Ortonville.
The county’s delegation to the state market Livestock Show and Horse Show came home having done themselves proud. They included Lois Blair, Karen Zehrer, Lee Blair, Jennifer Thiesse, Kathy Opdahl, Kelly Erickson, Richard Schumacher, Theresa Caskey, John Caskey, Jeff Tweit, John Tweit, Gordon Moen, Clint Theisse and Alan Bryce.
Sept. 30, 1982 – A Burnsville man drowned in Lake Pelican after his canoe capsized. Pope County law enforcement agencies dragged the lake before the body was recovered. Law enforcement officers had a busy week with two county men charged with sexual misconduct, a fire, a stolen truck, a hit-and-run, a motorcycle/truck accident and attempted break-in, several smaller thefts and vandalism.
Candidates for homecoming king and queen at Glenwood High School included Jeanne McIver, Karla McCrory, Debbie Schuett, Shannon Endres, Barb Rombach, Tricia Butler, Mitch Anderson, Wayne Olson, Robyn Zimmerman, Jeff Olson, Jon Arneson and Bob Haima. The annual homecoming game was scheduled to be played against Paynesville.
What was the biggest airplane for some time to have landed at the Glenwood airport did so because of renovation to the Alexandria airport. A 15-passenger Grumbler Gulfstream turbo-prop spent a couple of days here while its corporate passengers visited an Alexandria manufacturing facility.
Sept. 28, 1992 – Reigning over the 1992 Homecoming Week at Minnewaska Area High School were queen, Tracy Anderson, and king, Brian Malyon. They were crowned during the coronation ceremonies held at MAHS auditorium. Special guests were the 1991 royalty, Mindy Ronnie and Mike Andreas. Senior members of the 1992 royalty were Heather Dengerud, Mary Ostendorf, Amy Schroeder, Nicole Wagner, Angel Holte, Leah Halvorson, Andy Dziengel, Brian Honkomp, Ryan Schlief, Ryan Shae, Kit Pennie and David Ask. Junior class attendants were Karena Olson and Ted Reichmann. Sophomore attendants were Jenny Lundebrek and Jackson Burns. Kelly Berg and Josh Zavadil were freshman attendants. The junior royalty were Jill Foslien and Casey Boutain, first graders at Starbuck elementary.
By a four to one vote, the Pope County Board of Commissioners voted not to reappoint county assessor John Verlennich to another four-year term. In a related article, Verlennich requested that the board reconsider its decision not to reappoint him. This request came from his attorney, Richard L. Pemberton, the day after the board voted not to reappoint him.
Sept. 30, 2002 – After nearly two-and-a-half years of blood, sweat and tears, Glacial Ridge Health System (GRHS) was ready to celebrate its grand opening at the Medical Center in Glenwood. According to Doug Reker, GRHS administrator and CEO, nearly all of the available services would be on hand (including the CAT scan, emergency helicopter, specialists, etc.) at an open house for people to see.
With his team trailing by one and 47 seconds left on the game clock, Minnewaska Area Senior Vance Walker, who spent the majority of his high school career beating goalkeepers in soccer, boomed a school-record 41-yard field goal that gave the Lakers a 25-23 edge over Albany, the state’s top-ranked class AAA school, at the Lakers’ homecoming football game.
Oct. 1, 2012 – More than a month after the Glenwood City Commission was asked by Pope County if it could place a “Glacial Lakes Trail Kiosk” at Barsness Park, the commission gave its approval at Wednesday’s regular meeting. The kiosk will be placed on city property near the entrance to the Pope County Museum, it was stated.
Grain is piling up as the trucks keep pulling into the newly remodeled Prairie Lakes Co-op elevator in Glenwood. The improvements at the elevator have drastically reduced the time farmers wait to dump their grain trucks. Harvest has been going well, if a bit dusty from the lack of rain in the area.
The 2012 HOPE Award was given to Peter and Anita Ruegemers of Villard, and the 2012 National Quality Award will be awarded to Stephen and Hope Galens of Clifton Springs, N.Y.
