The Minnewaska Area girls’ cross-country team finished second in a pair of competitive invitationals over the last week.  The Lakers finished behind Milbank during the 8-team Milbank Invitational, Sept. 10, and also finished as runner-up during the 12-team NLS Invitational, Thursday.

Lauryn Ankeny was fifth and Kiearra Wilmes sixth at the Milbank meet, while Ankeny was sixth and eighth at the Little Crow Invitational.

Maeson Tank continues to lead the boys, placing third at Milbank to help the Lakers finish third of 11 team, and sixth at NLS, helping Minnewaska place eighth of 17 schools.

The only meet scheduled for this week is the Melrose Invitational, set for Tuesday (tomorrow).

at Milbank Invitational

Maeson Tank placed third overall to lead the Laker boys to a third-place finish among 11 teams at the Milbank Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 10.

Tank ran a time of 16:44 to finish 32 seconds off the winning time of 16:12 set by Payton Brown, who led his Milbank team to the title with 34 points, followed by LQP-DB (61) and Minnewaska Area (72).

Finishing second for the Lakers was Nick Ankeny, who placed ninth overall with a time of 17:46, followed by Zach Palmer in 30th (19:05), Ian Mills in 34th (19:22), Jayce Kovarik in 40th (19:43), Chase Wacker in 51st (20:09), Carter Dinsmore in 54th (20:24) and James Ward in 56th place (20:29) out of 73 racers.

In the girls’ competition, Lauryn Ankeny was fifth (19:59) and Kiearra Wilmes sixth (20:48) to lead the Lakers to second place.  Milbank won the 8-school girls’ team title with 35 points, followed by Minnewaska Area with 44 and Flandreau with 52.

Elsey Hagen was next for the Lakers with a time of 21:41 to place 18th, followed by Piper Citrowske in 21st (22:00), Aubrey Stark in 26th (22:21), Teagan Stark in 33rd (23:01), Izzy Bautista in 41st (24:58), Autumn Hess in 43rd (25:01), Alexx Carlson in 45th (25:56), and Molly Hjelm in 48th place (26:55) out of the 55 total runners.

Flandreau’s Faith Wiese won the girls’ race with a time of 18:41 over 5000 meters.

•  In the 7th-8th grade races of 3K, Owen Greene was sixth (12:30) for the Laker boys in a race won by Sisseton’s Ryder Graff in 11:43, and Sydney Ankeny was second (13:06) and Emma Koehntop 20th (15:39) for the Lakers in the girls’ race won by Wahpeton-Breckenridge’s Lucie Comstock in 12:51.

•  In the 4K JV competition, Caden Manderschied was 28th (18:12) and Ryan Koehntop was 38th (19:03) for the Minnewaska boys in a race won by Montevideo’s Ethan Andresen in 15:53, while there were no Lakers running in the girls’ race, won by W-B’s Gracie Falck in 18:05.

at NLS Invitational

Redwood Valley had three of the top five runners to edge the Lakers for first place in the girls’ competition at the NLS Invitational, Thursday.  RV totaled 74 points, while Minnewaska Area had 89 and LQP-DB had 92 to finish in the top three in the 12-school meet.

Hailey Werk, of Morris, won the race with a time of 20:26, while RV had runners place second, fourth and fifth, and Lauryn Ankeny led the Lakers in sixth place with a time of 21:26.

Kiearra Wilmes (21:58) was right behind in eighth, followed by Elsey Hagen in 19th (22:40), Piper Citrowske in 21st (22:46), Aubrey Stark in 42nd (23:59), Teagan Stark in 65th (25:33), Autumn Hess in 68th (25:59), Izzy Bautista in 74th (26:23), Alexx Carlson in 75th (26:25) and Molly Hjelm in 86th place (29:35) out of 91 total runners.

In the boys’ competition, Redwood Valley edged Sauk Centre for first (72-84) with NLS placing third with 124 points and the Lakers placing eighth with 210 points out of 17 full teams.

Brandon Kampsen, of Sauk Centre, won the 115-runner race with a time of 16:06, while Maeson Tank paced the Lakers in sixth place with a time of 17:41.

Next for the Lakers was Jayce Kovarik in 40th place with a time of 19:43, followed by Zach Palmer in 41st (19:43), Ian Mills in 59th (20:32), James Ward in 66th (20:41), Chase Wacker in 84th (21:13), Carter Dinsmore in 93rd (21:46) and Jaden Anderson in 97th place (22:03) out of 115 total runners.

•  In the 5K JV race, Caden Manderschied was 59th (24:08), Ryan Koehntop was 60th (24:08) out of 90 runners for the Lakers, while in the girls’ JV race, the Lakers did not have any runners.  

•  In the boys’ 1.5 mile junior high race, Owen Greene was 23rd (10:57) and Rylan Tank was 51st (12:03) out of 79 runners, while in the girls’ race, Sydney Ankeny was 12th (12:01) and Emma Koehntop was 28th (13:30) out of 42 runners.
