Grandma Thompson is very low and little hope is held for her recovery. She has been sick for the last year, but until recently it was hoped she might get well, but has rapidly been sinking until she took to her bed, about two months ago. In that time she has eaten very little and is but a shadow of her former self. 

The fair weather was not fair which some say was hardly fair to the fair ones who paid their fare expecting to fare better.

Among those who are planning on going to the University this fall are Hulda Hagen and Grace Kirkwold. Alma Tollefson, Bertha Lien and Agnes Brenden will attend St. Cloud State Teachers College. 

An Indian fighter and Civil War hero died at his home in Prairie Farms, Wisconsin recently. He was Ole Swanson, a brother of County Commissioner Simon Swenson of Blue Mounds, Mrs. Ole Kleven of Starbuck and Mrs. E.. N. Barsness of  Barsness township. He is also survived by his wife and nine children. Mr. Swanson was the last survivor of the Redwood Ferry Ambuscade. 

Miss Hilda Brosvig of Terrace will teach in District 3; Miss Gladys Lida in District 92; and Miss Magdalene Aslakson in District 41 this year. 

90 YEARS AGO

Dr. and Mrs. A.F. Giesen entertained the local baseball team, Oscar Olson, Ole Bardal and the Misses Orla Pederson, Grace Kirkwold and Ella Landaas at a chow mein dinner at their home last evening. 

Mrs. B.R. Hagen entertained a group of classmates in honor of  Miss Orla Pederson, who will be bride of the month, at her home Saturday afternoon. It was in the nature of a surprise shower. 

The last chance to see the league champions play on the home ground will be Sunday at 1:30 when the local team augmented by players from Hancock and Benson will play Kensington, it was announced yesterday by Dr. A.F. Giesen, manager. 

80 YEARS AGO

From September 10, 1942

Wesley Johnson put in the reminder of the foundation under the Red Owl store Monday. This will eliminate all danger of rats getting in. 

Hans E. Hagen celebrated his 89th birthday on Sept. 7 and went to the polls to vote at the primary election on Tuesday. He lives on the home place and greatly enjoys walking to the home of his son, Edwin a mile and a half away. His grandchildren find it difficult to keep up with him, so fast he can walk. 

School opened Tuesday morning with a total enrollment of 279, about the same as last year’s enrollment. 

Dr. Robert Merrill of Morris, who enlisted in the U.S. Navy last May, was recently commissioned Lieutenant, Jr. grade and rated assistant surgeon. Left Sunday for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station on Sept. 10. Mrs. Merrill and son, Bill, accompanied him and will remain near Chicago as long as Dr. Merrill remains stationed there.

A total of 358 student enrolled in the Starbuck school with the breakdown as follows: 1st grade 30; 2nd grade 36; 3rd grade 26; fourth grade 36; fifth grade 31; sixth grade 31; seventh grade 32; eighth grade 30; ninth grade 37; tenth grade 33; eleventh grade 31; and twelfth grade 30. 

Miss Muriel Elaine Olson of Buxton, ND and Paul Hoplin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Hoplin of Lowry were married Sunday evening at Aal Lutheran Church near Hillsboro, ND. 

Mr. and Mrs. Juliet Sylvester had their infant son, Galen Juliet baptized Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Kellner and Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Jackson. 

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Ronnie had their baby girl baptized Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She received the name Ardis Joan. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Juel Brenden.

A light frost Wednesday morning put a film of white on sidewalks and cars which disappeared with the sunrise. Labor Day was cold and blustery with light showers. 

The nation’s wheat farmers have voted to continue controls on their crop, but by the smallest margin in 12 such tests since 1941. 

The Starbuck Fire Department under the direction of Chief Norman Hagen, has just completed the second course in Firemanship Training as provided the Trade and Industrial unit of the Vocational Section, State Department of Education. This course consists of a minimum of ten hours instruction and is presented with the cooperation of the Starbuck school officials.

Mrs. Dale (Shirley) Anderson has been selected as Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America for 1972, according to Alice Femrite, elementary principal of the Starbuck school. Nominated earlier this year, these teachers were selected for this national honor on the basis of their professional and civic achievements.

Old tyme threshing on the Russell Sylvester farm Monday brought out hundreds of onlookers. The tractor, an old Farmall F-20 owned by Harold Andert was used for power while the threshing machine , a 22” John Deere was furnished by Terry Walker. Several people changed off pitching the oat bundles. One bundle load was pulled by a team while the balance was pulled by small tractors. 

Congressman Bob Bergland was honored at a reception held at the Minnewaska House last Friday evening.  He had the opportunity to visit with several residents.

A tragic fire swept through the LeRoy Dokken mobile home last week and completely destroyed the home and all of the belongings of the Dokken family. The home was located on the Tilford Dokken farm. The Dokkens lost all of their belongings and carried no insurance. 

Pat and Rachel Olson have sold Olson’s Red Owl in Cyrus to Harold and Shirley Lykin of Minneapolis, who assumed ownership Sept. 1. 

Independent School District 614 of Starbuck shows a decrease in enrollment of 22 students with the largest decrease coming in Grade 7. The total enrollment for the elementary grades is down four from last year with the largest decrease in the secondary grade of 18. Total enrollment for the entire Starbuck school district for this year is 421 compared to 443 last year.

They sprung up like magic. A number of tornadoes danced across their way across Pope County and Western Minnesota last Wednesday as unstable weather produced the threatening weather. 

What was once a barn on Steven and Ann Mullins farmsite north of Cyrus was demolished to nothing more than rubble by the first of many quick forming twisters. The tornado just missed hitting the Mullins’ new rambler home that is currently under construction.  Neither Steven nor Ann were home when the storm hit. 

The Pope County Board of County Commissioners again delayed action on the tentative approval of a contract with Lakeland Mental Health after reviewing second quarter figures compiled by Marilyn Moen of that agency.

Rosettes and pastry shells sold in a lot of places around the country come from Starbuck. There has been a Starbuck connection on those items for a number of years, but now Pastry Shoppe Inc. owner, Larry Kittelson has brought the business to Starbuck. 

The Minnewaska District Hospital received confirmation from its accounting firm Wednesday that its financial condition in fiscal year 2002 was much improved over 2001 and it is moving in the right direction. 

Pope County Auditor-Treasurer Mary Pischke gave the county’s board of Commissioners a pretty dire account of the county’s finances at a budget meeting on Wednesday morning. Sometime after the meeting adjourned, however, Pischke discovered a mistake that made her calculations overly dire.

Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck welcomed new Administrator Murray Finger last week Tuesday (Sept. 4). 

50 years ago, Arne Pederson of Starbuck built a ball diamond on his farm halfway between Starbuck and Benson. On August 18 of 2012 another game was played there. The number of people that showed up, fans included was about 55 people. Arne Pederson received a framed certificate that people signed congratulating him on 50 years.

There were smiles, handshakes and a round of applause at the Tuesday Sept. 4 county board meeting as commissioners officially declared Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012 “Mary Schley Day.” The day was named to honor long-time Pope County Human Services employee, Mary Schley, who recently retired after 33 years of service.
