The weed ducks are getting so numerous that the boat Minnewaska on Tuesday almost ran into a flock of several hundred.
A party from Iowa purchased Ferris Councilman’s farm in Hoff last week for $40 per acre. A good price for land as the buildings were about ready for dilapidation.
A Literary Society has been organized in the high school for the purpose of developing the school literature and promoting interest in good literature, reading, debates, etc. The officers elected were Edward Barsness president; Laura Gaarder vice president; and Agnes Engebretson, secretary.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Ole Heltner at the Immanuel Church on Wednesday, Rev. G. O. Forde officiating. Mrs. Heltner died last Monday after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, Ole, and six children, Olive, Julia, Ervin, Arthur, Lillian and Anton. A son Raymond died 4 years ago. A sister and five brothers also survive: Mrs. David Barsness of Surrey, N.D., Gust and Ole Engebretson of New Prairie; Emil and Martin of De Lax, N.D.; and Anton of Westhope, N.D.
At the services next Sunday morning a class of eighteen will be confirmed at the Fron Church by Rev. H. O. Koefod. The following is the class roll: Melvin Opdahl, Donald Amundson, Julius Pederson, Henry Rud, Alida Skaaden, Alice Brenden, Agnes Hagen, Hazel Urness, Verna Urness, Cora Aaberg, Bertha Sando, Myrtle Kvilhaug, Luella Haugen, Clara Anderson, Lucille Dalva, Myrtle Kleven, Dora Erickson and Lillie Anderson.

The Farmers Store stock was sold by the trustees, W.C. Torgerson and W.C. Rodgers, the past week. The hardware stock and fixtures were sold to a firm consisting of Irving Helgerson and Chester Peterson and C.V. Ostrom, and the general stock was sold to H.A. Juster, who is owner of stores in Northland South Dakota.
Supt. W.A. Peterson and Coach Claremont Gorder drove to Morris last Thursday evening to attend the district athletic meeting. The meeting was called for the purpose of arranging for the district and sub-district basketball tournament.
Glastone Stenson took Kermit Wollan to Minneapolis this week where Kermit hopes to be able to be able to enter Dunwoody Institute. He was unable to continue as a student at the Augustana College at Sioux Falls.

A quiet wedding was solemnized at the parsonage on Sept. 19th at 1 o’clock when Miss Jean Stadsvold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stadsvold of Starbuck became the bride of Milton Edward Rorvig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rorvig of Nora. Rev. K.R. Palmer read the service.
Kermit Hanson, Seaman second class is missing in action according to a telegram received Wednesday morning by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Hanson, from the Navy Dept. Kermit, age 21, was graduated from Starbuck high school class of 1940. He enlisted in the Navy Oct. 11, 1940, the first Starbuck boy to enlist in the navy.
Maxwell Smedstad, son of Mrs. B.O. Smedstad, bought the barber shop at Hoffman recently. Mr. Smedstad has been engaged as a barber at Morris for 13 years. He is married and has two children.

Dr. W. W. Wrolson, who was discharged from the army Sept. 17, was here this week making arrangements to reopen his dental office, Oct. 13.
Relatives and friends came on Saturday evening to help Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Olson celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
A total of 396 pupils are enrolled in Starbuck Public Schools this year. The largest in history.
Eugene Robinson of Northfield arrived last Wednesday and is employed as printer-operator at the times.
Miss Magna Peterson and her niece, Theresa Peterson, returned from a trip last week to Washington, D.C., where they were guests of Miss Olivia Peterson.
Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Olson of Hoff observed their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday with an open house at their home.

Several hunting seasons will open in Minnesota Saturday, Sept. 22, the Conservation Department reminded today.
Celebrating her 103rd birthday, on Monday, was a strenuous day for Hannah Troen, Starbuck’s “Grandma,” but the excitement of the day’s events were met with the same ruggedness that characterized her 103 years.
The 11th annual county-wide auction of prize blue ribbon 4-H livestock at the Pope County Fairgrounds netted $5,500, an increase over last year’s sale. The attendance was excellent.

The Starbucks Lions Club held their first meeting of the year on Monday evening with a dinner and an attendance of 47. A number of guests and prospective members were present and enjoyed comments by Christian athletes
Pastor James “Jim” Sumption announced his resignation as pastor of Indherred Immanuel and St. John’s churches to be effective October 31st.
The Department of Natural Resources announced last week that it will not close the pheasant season in west central Minnesota counties, as requested by several area sportsmen’s clubs.

Total domination. That about sums up the way the Starbuck Bucks played in handing the Hoffman- Kensington Patriots their second loss of the young season by a 37-6 score.
Ronald Branch, brother of Charles Branch, Starbuck young man who was killed in the Viet Nam Conflict, responded on behalf of the Branch family to the gathering of dignitaries, officials and interested persons assembled at the Starbuck VFW for the dedication ceremonies to name the softball field area after young Branch.
The Starbuck City Council met in special session last Monday evening to discuss and act on several problems that had to be deal with before the next regularly scheduled meeting Oct. 11.

Minnegasco will install approximately three-quarters of a mile of natural gas main along Highway 29 south of Starbuck later this month. The mains will serve the Busy Bee Ceramic Shop and other new customers in the area and will be completed in early October.
Starbuck Upper Elementary students take part in Minnaqua Program. This is an educational program designed to teach kids about recreational fishing, along with lessons in conservation, water resource, ecology and environmental ethics. It was started by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in 1990. The primary goal is to increase the publics’ awareness, understanding and appreciation of Minnesota lakes, streams, rivers, and wetlands through educational fishing clinics and workshops.

Starbuck Elementary school held an upbeat celebration of America and a somber remembrance of the tragedies of September 11th. The school held a ceremony in the morning, which included a moment of silence, patriotic songs and a flag folding presentation.
The opportunity to run for Starbuck city office came and went Tuesday with only four people filing. Milo Holte will run unopposed for his second 2-year term as mayor.
With few decisions to make at the primary election, most voters in Pope County made the decision to stay away from the primary election polls on Tuesday. A total of 1,081 of the 6,811 registered voters in Pope County voted in this year’s primary, the lowest turnout in several years.

The Morris-Minnewaska swim and dive team hosted Sauk Centre last Thursday night. The Gators came out more aggressive than in recent meets against the Streeters, hitting the visitors with a lot of firepower early in the meet.
At a short city council meeting on September 17 the council compared the budget to what having a city superintendent cost was last year to what it would take to contract with PeopleServices to take care of the city water and wastewater plants. After some discussion the council approved the PeopleService contract for three years.
Representatives from Pope and Stevens counties accepted a grant sponsored by the national Veteran Justice Corps and the Minnesota Council on Crime and Justice which will enable the two counties to hire a veteran advocate.
