Tennis team clinches WCC title

The Minnewaska girls tennis team clinched at least a share of the WCC title with three conference wins last week over MACCRAY (6-1), YME (7-0) and Melrose Area (7-0). The Lakers, who also dropped a 5-2 decision at home to NLS last Tuesday, improved to 7-7 overall and 7-0 in the conference with the latest three wins.
The Lakers were set to close out the WCC schedule, Tuesday (tomorrow), at Sauk Centre before playing at Osakis, Thursday, and competing in the WCC Tourney, Saturday, at Alexandria.
Five Lakers have double-digit wins past the midway point in the season — Grace Jensen (12-3), Avarie Uhde (11-6), Jayda Kolstoe (11-6), Zoey Elwood (11-6) and Katy Vold (10-7).
Minnewaska 6, MAC 1
The Lakers moved one step closer to another WCC title with a 6-1 victory at MACCRAY, last Monday. The match had been scheduled for Sept. 15 at Waska, but rain forced a postponement and the two schools decided to meet up at Clara City instead.
The doubles teams swept three points as Sydney Dahl and Olivia Bleick won 7-5, 6-3 at first doubles, Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles and Avarie Uhde and Katy Vold earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at third doubles.
In singles play, the Lakers earned three more points, including a 6-2, 6-0 win by Megan Thorfinnson at first singles, a 6-2, 6-1 victory by Alia Randt at second singles and a 6-4, 6-3 win by Jayda Kolstoe at fourth singles.
The Wolverines, who hadn’t lost a WCC match until meeting up with the Lakers, earned their lone point at third singles in a three-set win over Olivia Danielson (1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-7 tiebreaker).
Minnewaska 7, YME 0
After a short trip down Highway 23, the Lakers swept the YME Sting in another WCC contest, 7-0. The Lakers lost just 12 total games in the four singles’ matches and four games in doubles.
Megan Thorfinnson led the shutout with a 6-1, 6-3 win at first singles, while Sydney Dahl won at second singles (6-1, 6-2), Olivia Danielson prevailed at third singles (6-1, 6-3) and Avarie Uhde was victorious at fourth singles (6-0, 6-1).
In doubles, Olivia Bleick and Alia Randt earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at first doubles, Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood earned their sixth-straight win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second doubles and Jayda Kolstoe and Katy Vold earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third doubles.
Six of the Lakers’ seven wins this season have come by 6-1 or 7-0 scores.
NLS 5, Minnewaska 2
The Lakers fell in a close non-conference match with NLS, 5-2, in what might end up deciding the third seed in the upcoming Section 6A Tourney. NLS picked up straight-set wins at first, third and fourth singles, as well as first doubles, while the other three matches went three sets.
Alia Randt earned a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 10-4 tiebreaker win at second singles for the Lakers’ first point and the team of Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood continued their winning streak with a 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 10-0 tiebreaker victory at second doubles. It was the seventh-straight win for the duo.
The Lakers almost picked up one more point, but the Wildcats rallied for a 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 10-4 tiebreaker win at third doubles over Avarie Uhde and Katy Vold.
Minnewaska 7, Melrose 0
The Lakers did not lose a set in sweeping Melrose, Thursday at home, 7-0. Megan Thorfinnson led the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at first singles.
Minnewaska continued its doubles’ success this season as Olivia Bleick and Sydney Dahl won 6-1, 6-3 at first doubles, Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood won their fourth match of the week with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at second doubles and Katy Vold and Avarie Uhde prevailed 6-1, 6-4 at third doubles. In addition, Alia Randt won easily at second singles (6-1, 6-2), Olivia Danielson earned a win at third singles (6-4, 6-4) and Jayda Kolstoe prevailed at fourth singles (6-4, 6-1).
