The Minnewaska-Morris Gators swimming and diving team won two home meets last week.  The Gators topped Holdingford last Tuesday at UM-Morris (105-81) and also beat Perham-New York Mills, Thursday at UM-Morris (106-80).  

“It was a busy week for the Gators, but we were able to pull off two wins this week,” coach Sam Oellien said.  “Clare Barnstuble had a personal-best on Tuesday with a 195.4 and then again, Thursday, with a score of 208.25.  

The Gators are 2-2 in the WCC and 4-3 overall after the latest wins.  This week, the team was set to host Montevideo, Thursday, at UM-Morris before competing in the section true-team meet, Oct. 14-15 at Alexandria.

Gators 105, Holding 81

The Gators improved to 2-2 in the WCC with a 105-81 victory over Holdingford last Tuesday night at UM-Morris.  Minnewaska Area won seven of the 11 events, including a 1-2-3 finish in diving and in the 400 freestyle relay.

Becca Femrite won the 200 freestyle in 2:13.7 and also won the 100 backstroke in 1:11.45.  Clare Barnstuble continued her strong diving season with first with a point total of 195.4, while McKenzie Luetmer won the 50 freestyle (26.19) and Malena Longtin won the 100 freestyle (1:00.35).

In addition, the 200 freestyle relay team of Makena Thoen, Melena Longtin, Serena Mellgren and Luetmer was first in 1:50.97, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Femrite, Melena Longtin, Mellgren and Luetmer led a 1-2-3 finish for the Gators with a time of 4:03.7.

“Lots of new section qualifiers and personal bests this week, including Sage Barnstuble, who saw a great time drop of nine seconds in the 200 freestyle, which at this point of the season is amazing,” coach Oellien said.  

•  The Gators also won the JV competition, 93-38, with the following Gators placing first:  200 yard medley relay of Akayla Werk, Yavonne Vanhorn, Alejandra Garcia Bernabe and Shelby Hoberg in 2:57.22; Jenna Detko in the 50 yard butterfly (44.66), Violet Frank in the 100 freestyle (1:17.22) and 100 yard backstroke (1:36.35), Gabby Schneider in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:28.64) and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Maria Heidelberger, Tommie Devick, Sadie Daniels and Ella Larson in 5:32.03.

Gators 106, Per-NYM 80

The Gators had seven titles again on the way to a 106-80 victory at home against Perham-New York Mills, Thursday.

McKenzie Luetmer had a first in the 100 freestyle (57.85), second in the 50 freestyle (25.95) and firsts with the 200 medley relay team of Makena Thoen, Serena Mellgren and Avery Svec (2:09.03) and 400 freestyle relay team of Becca Femrite, Melena Longtin and Mellgren.

Femrite also had firsts in the 200 freestyle (2:10.4) and 100 backstroke (1:12.8), while Mesa Kittelson won the 100 freestyle (57.85) and the 200 freestyle team of Avery Svec, Melena Longtin, Thoen and Soffia Stadtherr won with a time of 1:52.05.  “Our 200 medley relay team of all seniors got first and there were a lot of new section qualifiers, including Avery Svec, who made the section qualifying time in the 100 freestyle,” coach Oellien said.  “Avery has been so close for so long and has really been working on the little details, like her start, which is what made all the difference.”

•  The Gators won three events in the JV competition, won by Perham-NYM, 83-65, including the 200 yard freestyle won by Isabelle Emmert (2:42.54), the 100 yard freestyle won by Allie Staples (1:17.38) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Ella Larson, Rudy Baylor, Sadie Daniels and Staples in 5:19.99.
