October is National Farm to School Month and students at Glacial Hills Elementary School in Starbuck have been participating in a variety of activities to learn about where their food comes from along with investing time in the school greenhouse, raised garden beds and hydroponic garden! Over the last few weeks students have harvested greens and tomatoes to serve during school lunch.

Students were able to dig their hands in and can 93 pints of tomatoes last week and third through sixth graders held a salsa making contest. Each group made their own version of the tasty snack and then students and staff voted on their favorites.

On Friday Glacial Hills Elementary students spent the morning kicking off a new program called Fulfilled Fridays. The program is set to offer a large variety of classes including Horticulture and Wildlife, Outdoor Recreation and Wellness, Brain Builders and Art Exploration!

Students were grouped into two stations to do some fishing and to partake in an environmental literacy art activity. “I want to extend a huge thank you to Last Cast Bait & Tackle for providing the school with bait and volunteering their time to help with this event. We’d also like to thank the parents and Lowry State Bank for helping the kids fish at the marina! What a success,” said Jodee Lund, Director of GHES.
