Alia Randt goes low to return a shot during a second singles’ matches against Staples-Motley last week. The Lakers beat Melrose in the Section 6A opener and were set to play Litchfield this week.

The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team won its first Section 6A match against Melrose, Thursday, beating the Dutchmen, 6-1, to earn a match against top-seeded Litchfield, Tuesday (tomorrow) in the Section 6A Final Four at Rogers.

Litchfield and second-seeded Osakis are both ranked among the top six teams in state Class A.  The winner of the Section 6A Team Tourney moves on to the State Girls Tennis Tourney, set for Oct. 25-28 in Minneapolis.

The Lakers, who improved to 9-9 with the win over Melrose, also played Staples-Motley last Monday at home, losing 4-3.

It was also reported that the WCC Individual Tourney, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 at Alexandria was canceled.  The first-round was in progress when rain halted play for the day.

Coming up are the first two rounds of the Section 6A Individual Tourney, set to begin Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Rogers.  The Final Four for the individual tourney is set for Oct. 18.

During the section individual tourney, it’s expected the Lakers will have Megan Thorfinnson and Alia Randt playing singles and Olivia Bleick-Sydney Dahl and Grace Jensen-Zoey Elwood playing doubles.
