The Minnewaska Area Football Boosters are looking at adding youth football as soon as next fall.

Discussions will be ongoing through the winter and the public is encouraged to offer support and comments by attending a meeting, or contacting one of the board members, including Jason Frey (president), Matt Williamson (vice-president), Brad Jenson (treasurer) and Dorie Williamson (secretary).

“We’re still in the discussion stage, but the more opportunity for kids, the better,” the group said.  “We have an information meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 28 at the school and everyone in the community is invited.”

The group is looking at starting with 5th and 6th grade football next fall, and more than likely, it will be tackle.  The goal is to play other towns as well and develop a solid feeder program for the Lakers, which most of the successful football programs in the state currently have.

“Rather than waiting until 7th grade to learn how to put on a helmet and pads, it would be great to have that in place before then,” the group said.  “This way, the importance of fundamentals can be worked on as well as learning the playbook.  The key is the development of players to play all facets of football, safely and correctly.”
