From November 29, 1912

Conrad A. Maanum and Mathilda J. Monson were married on Wednesday in Langhei by Rev. Pederson. Mr. and Mrs. Maanum will locate on their farm in Hoff which has recently been secured and appointed for their abode. 

Fifteen babies have been born in Starbuck to date during 1912 according to statistics furnished by Jens Solhaug, Village Recorder. That will give the teachers something to do in a few years.

Anton Mickelson of Cyrus and Emma Rorvig of Starbuck were quietly married on Friday of last week, only a few witnesses attending.

100 YEARS AGO

From November 24, 1922

Rev. M. Casper Johnshoy, to whom Fron’s congregation of Starbuck extended a call to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Rev. H.O. Koefod, has accepted the call and will move here with his family the first part of December.

George Olaf Holm, an American member of the Lutheran Mission has been kidnapped by bandits in Honan Province in China. He is the third American missionary to be captured by the bandits and they are also holding the five-year-old son of one of those men. Mr. Holm’s wife, the former Alvilda Rygh of Pope County, Minn., is still in China. 

While Martin Aune was attending the social in Dist. 92, his horses ran away carrying with them a telephone post to which they were tied. 

At a meeting of the Stockholders of the Farmer’s Elevator last week, it was decided to close the elevator and wind up affairs of the business. Lack of patronage was the reason given for closing.

Saturday morning was the coldest day so far this year. Most of the thermometers registered 10 degrees below zero. 

The Pope County Symphony Orchestra is to play its third annual concert in Morris on Sunday evening, Dec. 4. Last Monday the orchestra played its first concert of the season at Elbow Lake to a capacity crowd of two thousand people.

The community was saddened when the report of the death of Emmert Herbst, brother of Mrs. Alex Kapsner, reached here Friday afternoon. His death came in an airplane accident at West Palm Beach, Florida. He was a 1938 graduate of Starbuck High School.

Twins, a boy, Richard and a girl, Ruth were born to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnsrud at the hospital Nov. 19. 

Heler Carlson and Wallace Aaberg of Starbuck are among those from Pope County who will leave Dec. 3 for Fort Snelling where they will be inducted into the Armed Services.

Glenn T. Berge, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.H. Berge of Starbuck, is making those landings more perfectly for he has passed another marker on his quest for wings and a commission as a pilot in the Army Air Force. He has moved to the upper class at this Army Air Force basics flying school and will soon go to advanced flying school for the last phase of his training in powerful planes, similar to those used in actual combat.

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Troen were honored on their 60th wedding anniversary at the new Fron Church Sunday, Nov. 22. They have five children: Marie (Mrs. Casper Gorder), Peter, pastor at Baltic, S.D., Olava (Mrs. Casper Johnshoy) of Fron congregation, Starbuck, Ellen (Mrs. J. Melvin Moe) of Olivet Congregation, Fargo, N.D., and Magnus on the home farm.

Pvt. Donald Aaberg was injured in Korea on Nov. 9. He was operating heavy weapons when he was injured. He is the 343rd hospitals in Japan. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Aaberg only know that a shell entered his ankle causing a compound fracture.

Miss Adeline Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Larson of Starbuck, and Melvin Moe of Willmar were married at the Fron Lutheran Church Nov.15. The couple will make their home in Willmar. 

The following Starbuck men will report for induction on Dec. 4: Gilbert LeRoy Anderson, Kenneth Joseph Brevig and Harold Charles Jackson.

Herman Mortenson, while telephoning the highway department at Willmar as to the conditions of the roads to the cities Tuesday, was dumbfounded when the office gal asked him, “Herman, are you having turkey for Thanksgiving dinner?” Mortenson stammered, “I don’t know if I will get any further” The office girl replied, “I was talking to Herman in our office.”

From November 22, 1962

Parent-teacher conferences in the elementary department of the Starbuck schools were attended by almost 100 percent of our parents. It was very encouraging to note that many fathers took the time and interest to come also. 

Under the able leadership of Commander Henning Myking, the American Legion has gone over the top for 1963. This is the earliest date in several years that the response to legion membership has been so good. 

The Senior class of Starbuck High School, under the direction of Miss Marilyn Blegen, gave an outstanding performance at the high school auditorium on Friday evening, Nov. 16, when they presented “The Boarding House Reach,” a three-act comedy written by the Art Craft Play company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

College graduates are now able to take advantage of a new Officer Candidate School enlistment option available in the Regular Army, it was announced by Master Sergeant LeRoy Minlschmidt and Staff Sergeant Richard W. Krekelberg, local Army recruiters at St. Cloud. This is the first time a program such as this has ever been offered, and it will affect many college graduates who are interested in obtaining a commission.

Approximately 250 women attended the “Ladies Appreciation Day” sponsored by wives of the chamber members Saturday afternoon. Nine display tables were set up showing ideas for Christmas as well as for use throughout the year. All items shown were made by local talented ladies from our community. The women also had the opportunity of doing some Christmas shopping while there. 

The Red Cross Bloodmobile visit at Glenwood resulted in a good turnout of 210 pints donated in the one day-six hour appeal. It was reported there were 31 rejects for various reasons and 21 first-timers. 

A hearing on a special application of a “certificate of need” by the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck was held at the Court Chambers in Glenwood Thursday. Judge Paulson, Milaca, was the presiding officer. The application to the Central Minnesota Health Planning Council was a request for approval to make the local home a 75 resident home, or in other words, an additional 16 more than the present 60. One room would be lost in the present plans which would be used for a treatment center.

aJim L. Ozbun, son-in-law of Odell Smedstad and the late Blanche Smedstad of Starbuck, became Dean of the College of Agriculture recently at Washington State University. Ozbun is a native of Carson, N.D. 

Patti Murphy, a senior member of the Moorhead State University volleyball squad was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Minnesota Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Championship and to the All Northern States Conference volleyball team last week. 

Starbuck school staff members were honored last week during American Education Week for having served their district for a number of years. Those honored were Arnold Pederson, Lola Lommel, Edith Erickson, Helen Bollum, Warren Olson, Robert Frank, Jerome Flom and Warren Baukol. Non-certified personnel honored were Rosalie Sorenson, Eunice Erickson, Corrine Hoium, Orlin Kleven and Lois Thiesse.

From November 25, 1992

Approximately 50 parents, one grandma and a sister became seventh graders for a day last week at Minnewaska Area High School. Junior High Principal Wayne Norby masterminded the event which allowed parents to switch places with their seventh grade student. It was a chance for a “hands-on” experience. Some MAHS 7th grade parents returned to the classroom in a one-day experiment of the students and parents trading places for part or all of the day in school. The parents who took part participated in all of the activities during the school day, including riding the bus, eating lunch in the cafeteria and attending classes. 

A large barn on the Ed Sievert farm in Minnewaska Township was totally destroyed by fire of a yet undetermined nature last Thursday afternoon. Neighbor Bob Friesen saw smoke coming from the barn from his home and called 9-1-1. When the Starbuck Fire Department arrived, the barn was totally engulfed in flames and the only thing they could do was to contain it and prevent it from spreading to other buildings.

Rob Rinde purchased the building which housed The Friday Shop with historic renovations in mind. He and Kate Hall were prepared to purchase another building when Rinde “serendipitously” encountered Joyce Wahlquist when he happened upon The Friday Shop, and she explained the historic significance of the building and the former look of the interior. 

The Christmas Extravaganza fundraiser garnered large crowds and raised a considerable amount of money for local daycare providers. The fundraiser saw steady crowds on a chilly Saturday. Visitors were able to buy crafts, but also learn of the reality of domestic violence problems in Minnesota. 

The Starbuck Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors met Nov. 12 to discuss many issues including the Heritage Days craft show, the Christmas Light Show and the new town map.

Volunteers were ready to serve the public who showed up for the free Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes and all the usual Thanksgiving trimmings. The event, put on by community volunteers who do the cooking, serving and even driving meals to those who cannot get out, attracts a large number of dinner guests. This year, 449 meals were served; 251 at Minnewaska Area High School and 198 delivered to homes. 

A new face will be on the sidelines at Minnewaska boys’ basketball games this season. Todd Beecher takes over the helm after the resignation of longtime head coach Phil Johnsrud. Beecher has worked in Minnewaska basketball for many years, coaching youth teams, traveling teams, summer league team and now the Lakers’ varsity team. Beecher is familiar with the players, having coached many of them from their youth and during the summer. 

The seventh-grade girls’ basketball team, coached by Linda Mills, kicked off Tuesday night. The girls played New London-Spicer at the elementary school. Minnewaska will field just a seventh-grade team this year, not an eighth grade team. The eighth-graders were moved up so Minnewaska could once again field a “C” team. The girls played the NL-S eight-graders in game one and the NL-S seventh-grade in game two.
