Lakers fall to Paynesville despite being tied at half

The Minnewaska Area girls basketball team is still searching for its first win of the year after losing a home game to Paynesville last Tuesday night, 49-45.
The Lakers, who dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference, were also set to play at Morris Area, Thursday, but that game was postponed for the second time due to weather. The new date is Tuesday, Jan. 24.
The Lakers are set to take part in the SMSU Tourney, Tuesday, Dec. 27, before getting ready for a game at Litchfield, Tuesday, Jan. 3 and a home game with West Central Area, Thursday, Jan. 5.
Paynesville 49, Waska 45
The Lakers fell to 0-6 overall with a 49-45 non-conference loss to Paynesville last Tuesday night at home. Minnewaska Area led early, 15-11, but the Bulldogs came back to tie up the game at halftime, 27-27.
In the second half, the Lakers scored just 18 points while Paynesville scored 22 to earn the 49-45 victory.
The Lakers shot 31 percent from the field (19-for-61), including 3-of-22 from three-point range. Minnewaska Area also hurt itself at the line, going just 4-of-10.
Megan Thorfinnson had 17 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Lakers. She was 7-of-17 from the field.
Brooke Kolstoe added eight points and seven rebounds, while her sister, Jayda, had seven points and a team-high eight boards.
It was the low point total for the Lakers, who have scored 47 points three times. The 49 points allowed was also a season low.
Sydney Dahl chipped in with seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks for the Lakers, while Alia Randt, Lauryn Ankeny and Leslie Murken all had two points, and Avery Fier added four rebounds and two assists.
