The Lakers had only one competition during the week, but it was a hectic one as Minnewaska Area had four matches in one night at the Minnewaska quadrangular last Tuesday night.

Prior to the start of the quadrangular, the Lakers wrestled West Central Area in a WCC contest, losing 47-24.  After that, Minnewaska wrestled the other three teams, beating BOLD (66-18), but also losing to Paynesville (51-25) and Border West (50-28).

The Lakers fell to 5-7 overall after the meet, which includes a 1-3 record in the WCC.  This week, Minnewaska Area was set to host a triangular at home, Tuesday (tomorrow) before taking a week off to prepare for a quadrangular at EVW the following Tuesday.

During this week’s triangular, the Lakers are set to wrestle Sauk Centre-Melrose at 5 p.m. and Kimball Area at 7:30 p.m., while SC-Melrose and Kimball tangle at 6:15 p.m.

Through the midway part of the season, the Lakers have seven wrestlers with at least 10 victories — Miles Wildman (16-0), Chase Smith (15-1), Nick Ankeny (14-2), Myles Reichmann (12-4), Chase Boelke (12-5), Jayce Kovarik (12-6) and Xander Johnson (10-8).

at Waska quadrangular

The Lakers opened up the home quadrangular with a conference match against WCA-Ashby-Brandon/Evansville.  Minnewaska earned five victories against the Knights, taking a 24-18 lead with all five wins coming in the first eight matches.

It was all WCA from there as the Knights won the final six matches to earn the 47-24 victory.

Miles Wildman opened up the match with a 16-12 victory at 106 pounds and, after a loss at 113 pounds, Chase Smith (:31) and Isaiah Rosario (1:26) picked up pins at 120 and 126 pounds for an early 15-6 lead.

WCA won at 132 and 138 pounds, while Minnewaska earned its other two wins with a 5-2 victory at 145 pounds by Nick Ankeny and a pin in 3:16 by Braylen Scharmer at 152.

•  The Lakers had little trouble with BOLD, winning 66-18.  Minnewaska Area won 11 of the 14 matches, picking up six pins and five forfeit victories.

Miles Wildman (:54) and Jude Bailey (3:36) gave the Lakers an early 12-0 lead with pins and Chase Smith’ forfeit win at 120 pounds increased the lead to 18-0.

BOLD earned its three wins at 126, 138 and 152 pounds, but the Lakers also picked up wins by Garrett Jungclaus at 132 pounds (pin in :47) and Nick Ankeny at 145 (pin in 2:52) to put Minnewaska Area up 30-18 after eight matches.

The Lakers swept the next six matches, getting quick pins by Jayce Kovarik (:48) and Xander Johnson (:37) along with forfeit victories by Nathan Dell (170 pounds), Chase Boelke (195), Noah Jensen (220) and Eric Bowen (285) to complete the 66-18 rout.

•  During the 51-25 loss to Paynesville, the Lakers earned five pins, including pins by Miles Wildman at 106 pounds, Chase Smith at 120 and Noah Jensen at 220, along with a 3-1 decision by Nick Ankeny at 145 pounds and a 15-7 major decision by Jayce Kovarik at 152.

Paynesville had five pins and three forfeits for 48 of its 51 total points.

•  Border West, which nipped Paynesville in one of the other matches, 32-31, to earn the quadrangular team title, beat Minnewaska Area in the final match of the night, 50-28.

Three of the Lakers’ wins came in the final four matches as Xander Johnson (182 pounds) and Chase Boelke (195) had forfeit victories and Noah Jensen won by a 27-second pin at 220 pounds.

Earlier, Miles Wildman opened up the contest with a pin in 1:48 at 106 pounds and the Lakers’ other win was a 13-5 major decision by Braylen Scharmer (145).
