Lakers crowned conference champions

Feb. 28, 1963 – The Soo Line was about to petition to drop the two trains through Glenwood. The railroad wished to drop the two trains between Glenwood and Portal N.D., due to financial considerations. The Interstate Commerce Commission had already told railroad officials once that the trains must stay in operation. 

The annual World Day of Prayer observance in Glenwood was to be held at the First Baptist Church. Women taking part in this event were Clarice Buchholz, Mary Gilman, Gloria Doebbert, Mrs. Bernard Nelson, Mrs. Wayne Spear, Pansy Johnson and Margaret Rygh.

The Villard Mallards had clinched the Little 8 crown. Coached by Bob Blaine, the Mallards ended the season with a 13-5 record, the best in some time for a Villard basketball team. Staters for Villard included Dave Tank, Howie Sorenson, Ted Reichmann, Jerry Jenson and Butch Judkins.

Jerome McCarty, a Glenwood math teacher, was awarded a scholarship for advanced study at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. He had taught in Glenwood for 17 years. This was not the first time he had been given a major math/teaching award. 

March 1, 1973 – Moen’s Jewelry was about to open in Glenwood. Both Ron and Pat Moen, owners of the business, were expected to work in the store. They would sell jewelry and repair watches.  

Thirteen Glenwood High School students were planning to leave on a trip to Germany, accompanied by their German instructor, Gunnar Fosker. The 13 were Paul Bennet, Becky Jacobson, Rick Kleinschmidt, Tom Mork, Dian Manthei, Rick Wheeler, Jim Bennett, Dave Lee, Deb Domke, Diane Weispfennig, Les LaCroix, Steve Mikkelson and Betty Wildman. 

Two area men were injured in snowmobile races at Brooten. One was hospitalized in Willmar, the other in St. Cloud, following initial treatment at the Glenwood Community Hospital. Both suffered from serious fractures.

March 3, 1983 – Township voters were heading to the polls to elect officers and to their annual meetings to discuss a wide variety of business. Township officers and residents were expected to talk about what to do with revenue sharing monies, a county-wide fire sign system, bids for blading, snowplowing and mowing township roads, etc. Most townships would also elect at least one supervisor and/or other officer.

The Glenwood City Commission had been told that final negotiations were underway for the purchase of land for the city’s proposed sewage treatment facility.

Award winners at the annual DHIA banquet included the Roger Tollefson farm, Lonnie and Cindy Hoium, Steve and Marie Anderson, Ken and Jackie Thurk, Dale and Becky Stivland, Ron and Nancy Reichmann, Jim Pitzen, Daryl Barsness, Norman nissen, Jeff Aslakson, Gerald Dahlseng, Dan Braaten, Bill Eiler, Clarence Reichmann, DuWayne Rajdl and Allan Nygaard.

March 1, 1993 – The Lakers girls’ basketball team opened subsection 6 play in Osakis with a convincing 73-25 quarterfinal win over Eagle Valley. The Lakers were rated first in the tournament.

The Lakers boys’ basketball team was crowned the West Central Conference interconference champions following their 63-54 win over Litchfield, winners of the West Central Conference north division.

Technology was growing, not only at Minnewaska Area High School, but at the elementary school level as well. Teachers at E.N. Nordgaard were finding the uses for a new camera, which required no film, were endless. Dorothy Jenum, principal at ENN, noted that schools were beginning to phase out of computer labs and were developing work situations within the classroom for more flexibility.

March 3, 2003 – Grant Herfindal may be new to the Farm Service Agency office in Pope County as its director, but he’s plenty familiar with Pope County. “I’m very familiar with Pope County Farmers,” said Herfindal, who came to Pope County’s FSA office after seven and a half years in the same role in Meeker County. 

The Glenwood City Commission’s monthly work session was a short one and minus a couple commissioners. Commissioners Bill Ogdahl and Sherri Kazda didn’t miss much in the way of decisions, as the meeting was largely informational. The commission did agree to allow City Administrator Dave Iverson to begin negotiating the sale of a parcel of land located east of Second Street Northeast. 

March 4, 2013 – Viking Library System library card holders now have access to more than 100 popular magazine titles in digital format. Residents of the six-county region can sign up online with a Viking Library System library card to obtain an account and then immediately begin to download their favorite magazines. 

Bill Ryan, a disabled Vietnam veteran who was seriously injured while serving in the United States military in Kooche, Vietnam, gave an emotional talk to the public and those who attended the 14th annual Stoen Farm Supply Workshop last Thursday at the Minnewaska House. 

Beautiful March weather helped attract a large crowd to the Main Event-International Hetteen Cup snowmobile races on Lake Minnewaska on Saturday. The Main Event has become an annual attraction in Glenwood with the snowmobile race track set up on the lake just in front of Lakeside Ballroom so the spectators can watch from the Lakeside’s patio as well as from the ice. 

As part of Minnewaska Area Elementary School’s “I Love to Read” month, students had a chance to visit with one of Minnesota’s most beloved authors/illustrators, Nancy Carlson. Carlson’s speciality is teaching kids to feel good about themselves and others. On Feb. 22, Carlson spoke to MAES students about her writing and illustrating process and answered questions from curious fans of all ages.
