Little chilly these days. Gilman Aaberg enjoyed Friday evening with another Gilman in Langhei. Mr. Aaberg is superintending his father’s farm and it is needless to state he is doing well. 

Hilda Thorson is visiting her sister, Mrs. Hans Hanson near Lake Hazel at present, taking care of domestic work. 

A crowd of young and old people gathered unexpectedly at Tom Veum’s in Walden Saturday evening to surprise Oscar Rorvig. He will leave for Starbuck Monday.

The saloon needs two hundred thousand boys annually to recruit the great army of drunkards. Are you such a priceless individual that you enroll with them? 

100 YEARS AGO

A bay girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ole Vinge on Feb. 4. 

The new piano purchased by the Fron choir, arrived last Saturday. The choir is also considering putting in book racks on the backs of the pews so that better care may be taken of the hymn books when not in use. The matter will be taken up with the congregation. 

Rev. G.O. Forde was tendered a surprise after services at Indherred last Sunday when the Congregation presented him with an elegant brown leather music satchel. The choir had already given him a fine baton and a music rack had been ordered but not yet arrived.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ole Hagestuen will be held at Fron Lutheran Church next Sunday afternoon, Rev. M.C. Johnshoy officiating. Mrs. Hagestuen is survived by her husband and five children, Mabel, Hazel, Evelyn, Arnold and Lucille.

Glenwood is sponsoring a ski tournament again on Feb. 12. Among the skiers of note will be Oliver “Tuddy” Kaldahl, former American and Canadian champion, who will give several exhibition jumps. Also Les Serrin, who was Class A winner at Slayton in ‘32, Philip Peterson, former American Boy Champion and Walter “Shrimp” Finden, who has a long list of Tournament wins to his credit.

Miss Alice Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Olson and Neal Gardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Gardner were married at the Farwell parsonage by Rev. J.G. Vaage. Their attendants were Irene Olson and Melvin Mattson. 

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.O. Kleven was baptized Sunday by Rev. M.C. Johnshoy. She received the name Betty Jane. 

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ingvald Aslakson on Sunday. 

The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Forde was baptized at Indherred church on Sunday by Rev. G.O. Forde and received the name Richard David. 

80 YEARS AGO

George Billehus, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin C. Billehus, died at the Wadena Sanatorium Wednesday morning. He is survived by his parents; three brothers, Clayton, Paul and Robert and one sister Lorraine. 

Helen Jean, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julian Pederson was baptized at her home Sunday afternoon. Sponsors were Mrs. Martin Ronnel, Arnold Ronnie and Mr. and Mrs. James Barsness. 

Announcements have been received here that on February 3 a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin G. Veum of St. Paul. She will receive the name Wanda Faye.

District 37 school notes: The following pupils were on the honor roll the past six weeks: Carol Rud, Clinton Rud, Della Standafer, Dora Standafer, Douglas Opdahl, Gerdes Billehus, Helen Billehus, Jerome Jackson, Paul Billehus, Robert Billehus, and Shirley Rostad. Alvina Landmark, teacher.

Miss Carolyn Aal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ingolf Aal and Phyllis Knutson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knutson received their Fairview Hospital Nurses Caps at a capping service Feb. 1 at the Hospital Chapel in Minneapolis. 

Funeral services for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Luverne Syverson were held Tuesday afternoon at the Peterson Funeral Home in Benson. Douglas Luverne was born Fe. 1 at the Swift County Hospital and died Feb. 2. 

Eight boys helped Sherman Thompson celebrate his 11th birthday at the grant Thompson home Thursday after school. 

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mortenson entertained a group of relatives for supper Sunday in honor of JoAnn’s 3rd birthday.

The temperature continues to go up and down, Tuesday was a balmy 47, Wed., 22 above, and on Friday a misty rain fell which froze on everything so driving was very hazardous. Winds up to 50 miles an hour blew a Cyrus school bus off the highway Friday evening. Cars were reported to be stalled while attempting to get up the hills even on highways.

Brian Arnold, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Lundebrek was baptized by pastor Thomas Hoversten Sunday. 

Jeanine Gilbertson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gilbertson, a member of the White Bear Lake 4-H Club, was Chosen champion for the second consecutive year in the radio speaking contest, over radio station KXRA, Alexandria on Tuesday evening. 

Miss Marjory Kyvig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kyvig, has been on tour with the Augsburg College Band. 

Miss Janet Smedstad, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Odell Smedstad, has been on tour with the Concordia College Concert Band. 

Ruth Hagestuen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius J. Hagestuen and Alice Kyvig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kyvig were among the 47 student nurses who received their caps at capping exercises at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis Feb. 1.

Last Tuesday afternoon, January 30, the Instrumental Music Department of Starbuck High School hosted the annual South-Half District 21 music Clinic. Jerry Luedders and his classical Saxophone Quartet of St. John’s University provided both an exciting recital of saxophone virtuosity and a most interesting and informative clinical discussion of saxophone playing. 

The Starbuck High School held their annual Valentine Dance last Saturday night and as in past years, a king and queen were picked. This year’s Valentine Queen chosen was Barbara Tharaldson, daughter of the Dennis Tharaldsons. Craig Hagen will reign as king. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hagen. 

Hundreds of youngsters fished at the Scout Fishing Derby last weekend and as usual, with so much commotion, not too many fish were caught. The prize catch didn’t go to a scout but rather to a father who was along with his daughter in the event.

Curtis Bredeson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Bredeson will be on tour Feb. 6-13 with the Concordia College Concert band to parts of Minnesota and Canada.

A daughter, Sarah Francys was born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wigley of Mason City, Iowa Feb. 3. Dr. and Mrs. Donald Bucher are the grandparents. 

Timothy J. Anderson, son of Arden D. Anderson of Starbuck, has been promoted to the rank of Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force. Anderson is a jet mechanic at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia.

Funeral services for Mabel Hildebrandt, 91, were held from the federated Church in Morris  February 4. She is survived by two daughters, Helen Hildebrandt of Breckenridge and Mrs. Richard (LaVerne Landmark) Hemming of Morris.

Carrie Ostendorf and Christian Johnson were named MAHS Snow Week Queen and King last week. 

The tri-district of Starbuck, Glenwood/Lowry and Villard have individually and collectively approved the consolidation of the four districts.

Funeral services for Virgie Lida, 85, were held at Minnewaska Lutheran Home  January 12. She is survived by two sons, Charles of Starbuck and Douglas of Coon Rapids. 

Shanna Lynn Carrico of Ranchester, Wyoming and Steven Lunderby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lunderby of Starbuck were married October 10, 1992  at Ranchester Community Church. The couple will make their home in rural Starbuck.

The Starbuck Jaycees plan to become a force in the community in 2003. The group named it’s new board of directors and set a goal to increase their membership and lead the local chapter to make a difference.

Those of generations ago may remember a time when it was typical for doctors to travel to the homes of their patients, but that has not been the norm in the recent past. Sue Zaic, Director of Minnewaska Home Care and Outreach, and the Home Care staff plan to begin giving patients who may otherwise go unnoticed a chance to receive better, more comprehensive health care. 

Students from Starbuck, E.N. Nordgaard, and Villard Elementary Schools gathered, along with their families, at the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood  for a night of folk dancing. Christopher Yaeger, the artist in residency for all three schools, led the large crowd in several dances from around the world. The students revealed all the dances they learned during the time Yaeger spent with them at their respective schools.

Starbuck Horizons welcomed a familiar face to their efforts. Cory Holten, a student from the University of Minnesota Morris is going to be working with Horizons and the community of Starbuck to help local businesses get exposure through the new website. He will be reaching out and visiting with Starbuck businesses and organizations throughout March and April. The website will take over the existing starbuckmn.org.

Jason Krebsbach of Central Minnesota Housing Partnership (CMHP) had a request for commissioners last week. He attended the regular county board meeting to ask if the county board would allow CMHP to provide funding to eligible rental property owners in Pope County who are looking to make improvements  to their rental property. 

The Women of East Zion Lutheran Church have just completed compiling a cookbook. It is a book of traditional and up-to-date recipes. These are recipes that have been passed down through generations of church women dating back to the beginning of the ladies group in 1889. The book also includes memories from individuals who share thoughts of past experiences at East Zion. Also included are comments and recipes from six former pastors or their wives.
