From February 21, 1913
Another of the old and sturdy pioneers has passed away. Ole J. Haugen, 83, died last Saturday surrounded by his wife and daughters, who made his last days on earth as happy as kind hands could make them. He is survived by his wife, Bertha and seven children: Mrs. Erik Overson, Mrs. E.P. Byhre, Mrs. J.P. Olson, Mrs. M.P. Eidberg, all of Starbuck and vicinity, Mrs. Charley Olson of Litchville, ND, Olaf of Blue Mounds and Julius of Glenwood.
Starbuck is a good little town. Everybody is feeling friendly to everybody else and business is humming. Starbuck is the place to locate, for anyone looking for a thriving business place.
Little Winona Jergenson celebrated her 5th birthday last Friday. Winona is a little valentine.
100 YEARS AGO

Dr. W.W. Larson moved his dental equipment into the new clinic building last Monday, and now occupies the three rooms on the south side opposite the waiting room and Dr. Christenson’s office room.
This week one of the worst storms this vicinity has seen in many years completely tied up railroad traffic so that we have had no mail since Tuesday. Many people had trouble getting home from town because the wet snow froze over the horses eye’s so they couldn’t see where to go.
A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Ostgulen of Minnewaska on St. Valentine’s Day.
Funeral services for Lars T. Hogy will be held Saturday at the Cyrus Lutheran Church at 11 o’clock and the St. Johns Church at 2:30, Rev. Forde and Rev. Quammen officiating. He is survived by his wife Ida and six children: Gerda, Clarice, Edna, Lorna, Luther, Raphael and Victoria; two sisters, Mrs. L.S. Ronnie and Mrs. John Lybeck; and one brother John P. Hogy.
Because of the snow storm last Tuesday many teachers and pupils didn’t get home. From Dist. 53, the teacher and pupils stayed at the P. W. Sylvester home; from Dist. 41, they all spent the night at Oscar Wesen home, and in the Kamrud school they all stayed in the schoolhouse over night.

Fire starting from an overheated stove caused damage estimated at $100 at Immanuel Church in Walden Sunday morning.
In the home declamation contest held at the Starbuck School last Saturday, the following were first place winners: In the dramatic group, Geneva Larson; in the oratorical group, Eldred Nelson; in the humorous group, Pearl Norby.
A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Engebret Braaten on Feb. 11.

Mrs. Nels Stenson received a telephone call from her son, Roy, who is stationed at Big Springs, Texas on Sunday morning saying he was fine and hauling bombs for pilots at the airfield there.
Leland Delano, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Danielson was baptized Tuesday at the E. Braaten home by Rev. M.C. Johnshoy. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Berge of Starbuck. All the fliers will receive pilots wings and some will be commissioned second lieutenants, while others will be appointed to the recently created rank of flight officers.
John Rud of Oakland, California, formerly of Starbuck, has four sons who are serving in the U.S. Army. They are John Rud, stationed at Oakland, California; Silas Rud, stationed at Camp Grant, Illinois; Leroy Rud at Camp Kohler, California; Loren Rud pf Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and James Rud at Camp Wallace, Texas.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mathias Pederson, 96, were held at East Zion Lutheran Church Feb. 5. She is survived by one son, Carl; one brother, Olaus Stadsvold; and three grandchildren, Mrs. Luella Stundheim, Mrs. Thorlief (Clarice) Landaas and Palmer Pederson.
Mr. and Mrs. Elom Colden entertained relatives and friends Saturday afternoon in honor of Marjorie Colden on her first birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Berg had their infant son, Darryle Keith, baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church Sunday. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Iver Eide, Beverly Evjen and Erling Brevig.
Quick action in driving by Lowell Maxwell saved the life of Gary, 3-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Ronnie, Monday morning. Maxwell, on his way to Starbuck on highway 28, saw the door of the approaching car open and the child fell out in the path of the truck he was driving. He applied the brakes and swerved to the side, missing the ditch, in an effort to miss hitting the lad who rolled over across the road, head over heels, into the ditch. Medical attention in Starbuck revealed burns from his tumble and a few lacerations. The mishap happened when his mother and Mrs. Clarmont Ronnie were on their way to Cyrus. Their three children were alone in the back seat.

The Starbuck Lions Club is sponsoring a “Dunk the Clunk” guessing contest. The object is to guess when an old car, located at the Starbuck beach will sink to the bottom. You will also be asked to give the date, hour and second. Deadline for the entries are March 15.
Jeffrey Keith, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Disrud, was baptized Sunday, Feb. 10 at First Lutheran Church of St. Louis Park. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Disrud and Mr. and Mrs. Earle Genson.
Mr. and Ms. Howard Womeldorf (Delores Smedstad) are parents of a son, Eric Dean, born Wednesday, Feb. 6. He is their 5th child and 3rd son.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hannah Troen, age 103, were held Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Fron Lutheran Church. She is survived by four children: Rev. Peter Troen of Minnewaska Township, Mrs. M. Casper Johnshoy (Olava) of Starbuck, Mrs. Melvin Moe (Ellen Pauline) of Moorhead and Magnus of Minnewaska Township.

In a joint announcement by the First National Bank, Richard Engebretson of Starbuck Electric and Carl Dahlseng, a business transaction was completed whereby the First National Bank purchased the present Starbuck Electric building located north and adjacent to the bank building. Starbuck Electric purchased the Carl Dahlseng building which presently houses Fred’s Carpet Service just east of the Old West Shop.
Loans on farm-stored 1972-crop corn, barley, oats, grain, sorghum and rye will not be extended beyond current maturity dates, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced today.
The Starbuck High School Instrumental Music Department will present its annual Mid-Winter Concert Thursday evening, February 15, at 8:00 o’clock in the high school gym.

Joyce A. Forbord, 16, daughter of Myron and Ida Forbord of rural Pope County, will appear with the distinguished Minnesota All-State Vocal Choir at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis Feb. 19.
Boyd Bredeson was honored with a plaque commemorating his many years of service to the Starbuck Chamber of Commerce at the regular monthly meeting.
Funeral services for Ross Landmark, 66, of Terrace, will be held Friday, Feb. 18 at West Zion Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Violet; three sons, Vernon, Greg and Darold; and two daughters, Mrs. David (Karen) Clausen and Mrs. Roy (Vicky) Weaks.
Airman Shawn E. Signalness son of Roger and Gloria Signalness, of Starbuck, and Susan Mithun, daughter of Sidney and Janice Mithun of Cyrus have completed basic training with the U.S. Air Force and have been assigned to Keesler AFB, Mississippi.

Funeral services for Luvern Lundebrek, 48, were held at East Zion Lutheran Church January 30. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; and three children, Aaron, Patrick and Janel, all at home.
Linden and Doreen Pederson of Richfield are the parents of a son, Derek John, born Feb. 11.
Jeanine Langman, daughter of Jim and Gloria Langman of Starbuck, and Stephen Junker were married at the home of the bride’s parents on December 19. The couple will make their home in Omaha, NE.
Jason Schumann was named the 1993 recipient of the Alexandria Press Club’s annual $1,000 Mass Communication Scholarship. He is the son of Mark and Sue Schumann of Starbuck.

Minnewaska Region Health Systems was represented by some cape wearing jumpers at Winterama’s Polar Plunge in Glenwood. Minnewaska Lutheran Home administrator Mark Anderson (pictured in the Times), Greg Rapp, Physician Assistant at Minnewaska District Hospital, and Jill Solmonson, member of the Minnewaska Ambulance crew, all took the plunge.
Phil and Elva Landgraf’s fingerprints can be found all over the Starbuck community in the form of their gardening skills and Phil’s woodcarvings and photography. The contributions of the longtime Starbuck residents are now being recognized as they have been named the Heritage Days Parade Grand Marshals. The couple moved to Starbuck with their three children in 1956 and never looked back.

The Starbuck City Council met for about three hours on February 11. Minette Johnson and Steve Larson of the Starbuck Arts Advisory Council presented the council with information about Holly Skogen Park grant.
Last year the council approved and appointed arts advisory council that wrote a grant to LRAC (Lakes Region Arts Council). The grant is designed to include and enhance arts in small cities. Philip Rickey is the artist that will be doing the sculpture work for the project.
Members of the CrossWind Lutheran Parish gathered on the ice of Lake Minnewaska on February 17 for the sixth annual Frozen Chosen Worship Service. The group sang a few songs and Pastor Paul Johnson led the group in prayer.
