110 YEARS AGO

From February 28, 1913

Little John Erick Charles Johnson, age 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Johnson was taken very suddenly sick Thursday of last week. All the care and love that skilled physicians and anxious parents and grandparents could devise were applied, but his little life passed out Friday morning. His death was due to spinal meningitis. Funeral services were held at Fron Church Tuesday afternoon and burial was in the Fron Cemetery.

Last week the relatives and close friends of Miss Ida C. Dyrstad gathered at 3 o’clock in the afternoon in the house of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dyrstad in Minnewaska Township to celebrate the event that made her Mrs. Henry G. Miller. The couple will make their home in Saskatchewan, Canada. 

A pretty wedding took place at the Langhei church last Sunday when Palvin O. Pederson and Valda Knutson were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony. The bride is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Iver Knutson and the groom is the son of Olaus Pederson.

At the meeting of the board of directors of the Shipping Association last week Otto Olson was re-elected manager. 

John J. Berg of Blue Mounds was quite badly injured last Sunday when he fell off a straw stack about ten feet high, landing on his back and fracturing several ribs. 

The following program will be given at the  Mimer’s Y.P.S. at the school house Sunday evening: Vocal solo, Mabel Rosen; Reading, Oswald Gorder; Piano solo, Lillian Hustad; Recitation, Esther NBorland; Clarinet solo, Ralph Forde. 

Funeral services were held at the Minnewaska Church on Tuesday for Martin Tolstad, Rev. T. Klevan officiating. He is survived by his wife Marbie, and five children: Marcus, Rhoda, Helen, Karen, and Claire Pearl. 

90 YEARS AGO

Miss Ruth Marion Bredeson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Bredeson, and Mr. Carl M. Evensvold, son of Mrs. Anna Evensvold of Grygla, Minn., were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents on Feb. 22, Rev. M. Casper Johnshoy performed the ceremony. The bride was attended by her sister Esther Bredeson, and Mr. Overstad was Groomsman. 

The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Haugen was baptized on Thursday by Rev. M.C. Johnshoy. The little boy received the name Warrine Orville. 

Dr. W. W. Larson has been unable to take care of his dental work the past week due to some burns on his hands which he received when he tried to extinguish a small blaze in his garage on day last week. 

Mrs. Henry Olson, wife of Henry Olson, Pioneer Cyrus business man, passed away early Tuesday morning. Mrs. Olson is survived by her husband and six children. The Olsons had celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary last July.

Sylvia JoAnne, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Opdahl was baptized Sunday afternoon. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hanson and Mr. and Mr. Tegner Hustad.

The Sub-District No. 2 Speech Festival will be held in the Starbuck school auditorium Wednesday evening and he following are working on their selections now: Joan Hagert, Ruth Larson, Clarice Westby, Sylvia Nelson, Marceline Akers, Ray Johnson and Nels Forde.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Simonson (LuVerne Thorstad) of Glenwood Feb. 17. She is their third daughter. 

About 15 young people enjoyed a tobaggan party on the hills near T.C. Bergs Friday Evening.

A number of women helped Mrs. Syver Aaberg and Mrs. Ole Braaten celebrate their birthdays on Monday afternoon. The two women are sisters and share the same birthday.

Mr. and Mrs. Thilmer Olson announced the marriage of their daughter, Helene Ilene to Mr. Aloysius J. Gorecki of Minneapolis on January 31. The couple will make their home in Minneapolis.

The former Maybel Reveling, in a letter enclosing a renewal to the Times, writes “My name has been changed to Mrs. H.J. Milstroh and my new address is 1828 Park Avenue, Minneapolis, MN. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Ole Sonsteng, 94, were held at Lake Hazel Lutheran Church January 26. She is survived by three sons, Arnold of Frazer, Montana, Carl of Bensonand Edwin of Larslan, Montana and Two daughters, Mrs. Obert, and Minnie, both of Minneapolis. 

Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Baukol was baptized Kim Martin at the Baukol home Sunday. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Roger Darrington.

A transaction was recently completed by Luther Kristensen and the Brunswick Company whereby Earl Larson took over the operation of the Star Lanes Bowling Alley. Duffy Abrahamson will act as manager.

Wanda Jean, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Amundson was baptized Sunday, Feb. 17 at Minnewaska Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Gorder, Jr.

The new home of Mr. and Mrs. George Wesen was the scene of a housewarming party Thursday evening when about 14 relatives, friends and neighbors gathered to honor them. 

Relatives and friends honored Mr. and Mrs. Arnold  Gorder, Jr., Ronnie and Kathryn, at a housewarming party Friday evening. The Gorders moved into their new home in the northeast part of Starbuck December 1.

Glenwood survived a second half Buck rally to pull out a 56-52 win here Tuesday night. The Lakers took an early lead and never relinquished it. At the end of the first quarter, they lead 14-10, and by the half the Lakers had opened a sixteen point lead over the sluggish Bucks. 

In place of the annual skating party this year, we will all take part in a Juliette Lowe Fund Follies. This will be held at The American Legion Building on Saturday, February 24th with curtain time at 1:30. 

At a special meeting of the Fron Lutheran church last Sunday, that body voted to co-sign a note for $28,000 to assist a new Lutheran church in Alexandria with its building program. Rev. Paul Ranum, a former Starbuck resident, is the pastor of the church. The vote was 101 in favor and 17 against.

Elmer Swenson, manager of the Farmers Union Oil Company for the past 30 years, was honored for his dedication at an Appreciation Night Saturday evening. 

Wayne and Jan Ronning announce the birth of a daughter, Tracy Lynn, born Feb. 21.

Funeral services for Ella Mather, 90, were held from the Fron Lutheran Church Feb. 12. She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Wilkes of Palatine, Illinois and a son, Wayne of Hopkins. 

Tim Owen, son of Jim and Barb Owen has been accepted for enrollment in the fall of 1983 semester at the University of South Dakota at Vermilion.

Funeral services for Mabel Barsness, 89, were held at the Glenwood Lutheran Church Feb. 15. She is survived by two sons, Joel of Starbuck and Lawrence of Rochester and one daughter, Barbara Swedenberg of Mendota Heights. 

Snookie and Lisa Berg of Maple Grove are the parents of a son, Trenton Ray, born Feb. 13.

Starbuck Elementary Students-of -the-Month are Luke Anderson, Ashlei Freeman, Adam Aaberg, Rochelle Tvrdik, Isaac Thomas, Shawn Peterson, Mindy Martin, Jodie Moen, Angie Pederson, Billy Kuhn, Sarah Fredrickson, Rod Hedner, Jennifer Jergenson, Amanda Disrud, Todd Starns and Andy Disrud. 

Graveside services for Richard Rosten, 65, of White Bear Lake, were held Feb. 27 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in White Bear Lake. Among his survivors are three sisters from this area, Ruthe Dahlseng of Starbuck, Elizabeth Braaten of Cyrus and Irene Raaum of Elbow Lake.

Harry Klyve, pictured in the Times, displays a “Unity Flag” that he has kept since World War II. A momento he pulls out every now and then to remind himself of a time long ago. 

The Central Minnesota Foster Grandparents Program is run through Catholic Charities. Starbuck Elementary School has had this program for more than 15 years and those involved have witnessed changes in themselves, as well as the students they work with. 

The Starbuck Area Chamber of Commerce met on Feb. 12 and welcomed new board members before getting down to business. Jeannie Pladson, Chris Carlson and Sandy Knutson are beginning their terms on the chamber board and Corbin Corson was welcomed as the new city council liaison, though he is likely only a temporary liaison.

Bev Paulzine of rural Alexandria has a passion for fishing so much hat she has her own fish house, her own gear, her own all-terrain vehicle and the confidence to go ice fishing all by herself. During the winter, you’ll find Bev in her cozy, 7-by-12-foot, six-hole fish house she’s affectionately named “Big Blue.” She usually sets up on Lake Reno, Maple or Mary. 

Franny Moen, owner of Franny’s Bar and son Mike Moen presented a Budweiser mirror in honor of the late Jim Fifield to Jim Bagley and Jan Pithey (Fifield’s nephew and niece) during the fishing tournament award ceremony on February 23. 

As a part of “I Love to Read” Starbuck community members came to Glacial Hills Elementary School on February 21 to read to the different classes. The third graders took time to pose while City Council member Lyle Katzenmeyer read them a story.
