14-year-old saved two lives
March 14, 1963 – The controversy over whether or not to dissolve the Sedan school district had boiled into the news again. A petition to dissolve the district and annex parts of it to Glenwood and to Brooten had the desired number of signatures, and the petition would be presented to the county board of commissioners for action.
An elderly Villard man was Pope County’s first traffic fatality in more than two years. The man was killed when his vehicle left the road, smashed into two trees and came to rest in a ditch. Family members believed he may have suffered a heart attack prior to the accident.
Glenwood Lakers’ coach Dave Hegna was quited as saying that his boys’ basketball team was “better than their record” showed. The Lakers had lost to Henning in the first game of district play. A powerful Wheaton team had defeated the Starbuck Bucks 79-56 to claim the district championship. Among those on the court for Starbuck were Bob Brenden, Rich Thompson, Mark Brenden, Keith Boyd and Dave Bardal.
March 15, 1973 – The mayors of Pope County met in Glenwood’s new municipal building to discuss regional planning. Included were Walter Ohmstreich, Cyrus; Robert Schroeder, Long Beach; Oliver Hoplin, Glenwood; Gene Watnass, Starbuck; E.F. Schluter, Sedan; and Leo Dahl, Lowry.
Pictured in the Tribune participating around town in the high school’s “job for a day” program were Harley Hanson, Sue Peterson, Keith Kerfeld, Kathy Beecher, Ann Kinney, Beth Bowen, Diane Weispfennig, Pat Lund and Marie Wold.
By a three-to-one margin, members of the Minnewaska Golf Club voted to purchase additional land located just west of the club. Don Bishop, club director, told members, “Even if we don’t expand to 18 holes in the future, the land will never go down in value.”
March 17, 1983 – Randy Schlief, after falling 12 feet to a concrete floor, drove himself from his place of business where the accident happened to Grant Hustad Co. where medical help was summoned. As a result of the accident, he suffered a fractured pelvis and a fractured wrist and sustained damage to one leg.
The junior high band was to play in a concert. Involved in the presentation were Ann Claeson, Michele Danielson, Kristen Martinson, Jean Besonen, Kristen Tank, Kelli Schwartz, Heidi Rust, Stacey Janssen, Pam Nelson, Chris Zimmerman, Stephanie Schroeder, Robin Kristo, Danelle Christianson, Lorie Jenum, Stephanie Howe, Holly Dengerud, Mary Stone, Amy Feigum, Kathy Dean, Colleen Erno, Ann Swanberg, MaryJo Meyer, Lisa Bowen, Brad Vold, Cory Mikkelson, Amy Bjurlin, Mike Lundblad, Michele Maher, Michele Bishop, Carol Bryce, Tammy Bryce, Jennifer Jackson, Cameron Johnson, Michele Lee, Eric Heieie, Kevin Bentler, Troy Salonen, Sarah Anderson, Kevin McCrory, Laurie Peterson and Micholene Marczak.
March 15, 1993 – The Minnewaska Lakers Boys’ basketball team was pictured on the front page of the Tribune celebrating their subsection 6A-2 championship over Browerville Tigers 91-59. The team was to go up against the Pelican Rapids Vikings in the Section 6 tournament at Concordia College.
Pope County had been notified that former county assessor, John L. Verlenich, had filed a lawsuit seeking damages for what he contended was wrongful termination. He was hired as a county assessor in 2979 and was terminated Sept. 22, 1992 effective Dec. 31, 1993.
Glenwood Retirement Homes, the collective term to describe Glenwood Retirement Home and related residential facilities, changed its name to Glenwood Retirement Village.
March 17, 2003 – It’s not very often that a person who built something comes back 50 years later to repair it, but that was the case at Lakeside Ballroom. Lester Ogdahl installed the floor at Lakeside in 1953. Last week the Glenwood City Commission approved his quotation of $5,790 to refinish the floor. Ogdahl said that it took his crew of four men six days to install the three-quarter-inch maple flooring.
A 14-year-old babysitter probably saved two lives in a house fire. Samantha Revak was babysitting a 4 and 5-year-old in a rural home several miles from Glenwood when the smoke detector went off.
March 18, 2013 – In its 50th year of operation, Glenwood Retirement Village (GRV) is planning an extensive renovation and building project.
While the project still remains in the planning stages, GRV administrator Mary Krueger and Jeri Zuber, of Yanek Companies, the company hired to do the design and construction, were at last Tuesday’s Glenwood City Commissioners meeting to layout the preliminary plan and keep the commission informed. No action was requested from the commissioners last week.
Glenwood City Commissioners decided at last Tuesday’s regular meeting that the city had no interest in purchasing the three buildings known as “the Culligan Buildings” on the north side of Minnesota Ave. in downtown Glenwood. The property and buildings were forfeited to the State of Minnesota for nonpayment of taxes, and Pope County Commissioners recently classified the parcels, valued them, and then offered the city the first chance to purchase all three parcels for $1 each, or $3 total.
