Prohibition won in Glenwood after the hottest fight on the option question ever witnessed in that beautiful lake city. This means Glenwood will be “dry” for two years; Lowry, as usual, went “wet” and as usual by a very slim margin, this years coming down to 2 votes 27-25. The cause of the failure in Lowry is directly chargeable to temperance people themselves who seem to be more or less of the dead-head variety. We again hear the old song that there are too many Bohemians in Lowry, but the Times is of the opinion that there are too many temperance people there.
Anton Aaberg was seen hunting for a cow that had strayed away Sunday.
Drives to Lowry will be $2.00 for single rig and $2.50 for double rig beginning April 1, 1913. Star Livery, E.A. Wesen, Mgr.

W.C. Torgersen, clerk of the school board announced at a special meeting, that the School Board would defer the matter of calling an election to vote bonds for a new school building for at least a year. The number of pupils in the school at the present time are; 84 in the high school; 43 in the 7th and 8th grade room: 47 in the 5th and 6th grade room; 48 in the 3rd and 4th grade room; and 53 in the 1st and 2nd grade room.
Last Tuesday, men from the village got out with shovels and picks and spent the entire day opening the state road to Benson. Those taking part in this shoveling bee were: Henry Olson, Raymond Noyes, Harold Peterson, Herman Tessem, Casper Forbord, John Overson, Oscar Engebretson, Carl Amundson, Ole Olson, Pearl Heegard, Harry Thorstad, Hans Mortenson, Henry Overstad, John Mickelson, Milo Hagen and Julius Billehus. Casper Forbord came in to get lunch for them, which was furnished by Dr. Christenson, Geo. C. Arneson, Rud and Gorder, Anton Aaberg, E.A. Erickson, Henry Hanson, B.C. Bergson, Wells Engebretson Co. Farmers Store.
Olaf Wollan took Leonard Berg entirely around his mail route last Tuesday with his Overlander car.
Miss Gertie Stadsvold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stadsvold of Rolling Forks and Mr. Edwin B. Hagen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Hagen of Barsness, were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents on Thursday by Rev. Chr. Pederson. Miss Valborg Stadsvold was her sister’s attendant and Mr. Leo Hagen was his brother’s attendant.

Miss Arlene Naig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Naig of Langhei, and Mr. Harold Maanum were married by Rev. K. R. Palmer at the Parsonage on Sunday, Feb. 26. Miss Luccille Dalva was the bridesmaid and Mr. Raymond Maanum best man.
Gustav Johnson, former violinist with Oscar Danielson’s orchestra will present his company of Swedish entertainers at the Starbuck Town Hall March 10.
School Notes: The seniors elected the following newspaper staff on Monday: Editor in Chief, Oliver Kamrud, assistant editor, Lloyd Rundquist, athletic director, Joy Nelson, General News Editor, Geneva Larson.
The Viking Hockey Club elected the following officers for the coming year: pres., Orville Thompson; secy-treas., Harry Thorstad; reporter, I.H. Helgeson; coach-Bob Thompson; captain, Alfred Aaberg; ass. captain, Conrad Pederson; Rreferee, Bob Thompson.

According to announcements received by relatives here, Miss Helen Hanson was married last month at San Diego, California to Sergeant Harold Henry of Cincinnati. They will make their home on the coast for the time being. Mrs. Henry is a sister of Mrs. Ingval Larson of Starbuck.
Starbuck residents were thrilled when they saw the picture of one of Starbuck’s young women in the Rotogravure section of th St. Paul Pioneer Press on Sunday, Feb. 28, 1943. Lt. Lucille M. Larson, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Larson was featured in many places showing her work as an Army nurse., She is stationed at the Army Air Force Base, Flying Squadron at Independence, Missouri.
Pvt. John Bustad, Camp Hale, Colorado, came home Saturday evening, having received his honorable discharge from the Army, due to the fact that he was past 38 years of age.
Mrs. John Lynch attended the capping exercises at St. Mary’s Hospital in Minneapolis Sunday morning, Her daughter, Mary Jane, is a member of the class.
A 9-1/2 lb. baby boy, Odin Peter, was born to Mr. and Mrs. O.S. Barsness Monday. This is their first son. They have four daughters.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Hanson are the happy parents of an 8 lb. 5 oz. son born Tuesday afternoon at the Glenwood Hospital. He is their second son.
A girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Steen Feb. 18.
Carls Anderson, 69, who has long been a resident of Lowry and has been a janitor at the Lowry school, was found dead in his home Saturday, Feb. 21st. The death was said to have been caused by a bad heart. Funeral services were held Feb. 26 at Norunga Lutheran Church.
Glenn L. Bennett, Lowry, volunteered for induction and will leave with a group that will be leaving March 9.
Donald, a junior at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Odin Rem, a Junior at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa and Cpl. John Rem, recently returned from 14 months overseas service in Korea, visited their parents, Rev. and Mrs. Rem over the weekend. Cpl. John Rem will leave for Fort Sill, Oklahoma soon.

Harry Klyve, rural Starbuck, was elected to serve on the Region 4 Development Commission now in the process of being organized. In a meeting chaired by Joe Gandrud, Glenwood, Pope County Township officers selected Mr. Klyve to represent this area.
Arthur Larson announced this week that he has sold the building housing the local “card room” to Chuck’s Red Owl. Charles Blocher stated that he has no definite plans to change the building and the card room will continue to operate as in the past.
Larry Kittelson, Starbuck, was elected as chairman of the Pope County Republicans at their annual caucus Monday evening at Glenwood. He replaces Dennis Martinson, Glenwood, who has served as chairman.

Ron and Carol Hovendick are the parents of a son, Michael James, born at the Minnewaska District Hospital March 3.
Carl Simonson will be honored at a dinner next Sunday at East Zion Lutheran Church for his 33 years of service as custodian at the church.
Paul and Sue Kirkwold of Starbuck participated in the Land O’Lakes annual meeting Young Farmers program held Feb. 21-24 in Minneapolis.
The Strommen Truck Line was honored by the Starbuck Shipping Association at their annual meeting last week, for their annual meeting last week., for their many years of service. Harold Strommen, owner of the business, has sold out that portion of the trucking business to Don Tersteeg of Starbuck.
Helen Hagert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hagert , suffered a broken collarbone and multiple cuts and bruises in Daytona Beach, Florida Sunday when she was struck by a motorcycle, knocking her to the street, while she was coming out of church.

Pope County Sheriff Gerald Moe has submitted his resignation to the Pope County Board of Commissioners March 3 after serving 11 years. Moe has accepted a position in the sheriff’s department of Pennington County and will move to Thief River Falls. The board has named Pope County Deputy Mark Hedner to fill in as interim sheriff.
Births: a son, Jordan Paul to Paul and Mary (Henriksen) Christianson of Savage March 1; a son, Trevor Short to Lee and Carol Sundheim of Placentia, CA January 30.
Curtis Danielson, Kim New and Anne Philipsen were the first, second and third place winners in the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Starbuck VFW.
Rick Bangsund of Starbuck was the $5,000 lottery winner at Petro Plus last week. He received a lottery ticket March 2 with his purchase of $12 or more.

When the Minnewaska Lutheran Home Auxiliary was formed in 1960, the group had no plans and no idea they would still be working on behalf of the home forty years later. The ladies of the auxiliary have shown what staunch determination and dedication can bring. Their fundraising efforts have continued far beyond payments on the building itself.
Poachers could have their fish and games license seized and face stiffer penalties, including having their boats, motors and trailers confiscated, under the state’s new gross overlimits regulations that go into effect March 1. The new laws are based on established restitution values that determine payments made to the state by poachers for illegally taken game and fish.
When the Minnewaska District Hospital became a Critical Access Hospital two years ago, it added approximately $350,000 – $400,000 in revenue to its bottom line per year – a huge boon by any standard. Now the Minnewaska Medical Clinic (formerly Starbuck Clinic) stands to improve its Medicare reimbursement in much the same way, according to a representative of the Minnewaska Regional Health System’s accounting firm, by applying to become a Provider Based Rural Health Clinic (PBRHC).

The Pope County board authorized a workflow change within county departments that will streamline county land transfers. With a transfer of duties, allowable by Minnesota statue, land transaction documents will now be the sole responsibility of the Pope County Recorder’s office.
Darlene Christman, director of the Pope County Hearts and Hands food shelf, just got done crunching the numbers for food shelf use in 2012. The adjectives she used were “startling,” “mind-boggling,” and even “frightening.”
Dalen Gosseling of the Starbuck Telephone Company gave the Dr. Seuss book, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut to every second grader at Glacial Hills Elementary on March 1. It was “Read Across America Day”, which is the national celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The students read Seuss’s Biography, some of his books and had Snack, Snuggle and Read all afternoon to celebrate his birthday and the end of I Love to Read month at GHES.
