Track teams compete at Litchfield Invitational at NLS

The Minnewaska Area girls track team placed third and the boys team was fifth at the 7-team Litchfield Invitational. The meet took place Thursday at NLS High School due to poor track conditions at Litchfield.
Winning titles for the Lakers were Lauryn Ankeny in the 1600 meter run (5:50.36) and the boys 3200 meter relay team of James Ward, Zach Palmer, Nick Ankeny and Maeson Tank (9:11.01).
This week, the track and field teams are set to host the first Minnewaska Invitational, Tuesday (tomorrow) before competing at the Pierz Invitational, Friday, April 21. Also coming up is another Minnewaska Invitational, set for Monday, April 24.
Coaching the teams this year are head girls’ coach Jennifer Johnsrud, head boys’ coach Zach Traphagen and assistants, Jacey Schlosser, Kayla Sorenson, Linda Mills, Gabe Eisenbacher and Nathan Snider.
Litchfield Invitational
EVW-Kimball dominated the girls meet and Annandale edged Litchfield for the boys title during the Litchfield Invitational, Thursday.
Minnewaska Area placed third in the girls’ competition, picking up one first by Lauryn Ankeny in the 1600 meter run (5:50.36). The top six place finishers earned points with points being awarded as follows, 10-8-6-4-2-1.
The Lakers did a great job in the relays with the 1600 meter relay team of Teagan Stark, Dacia Fleury, Ankeny and McKenzie Luetmer placing second in 4:30, and the 3200 meter relay team of Kiearra Wilmes, Stark, Luetmer and Ankeny earning second in 10:40.9.
In addition, the 800 meter relay team of Alannah Christensen, Alia Randt, Payton Andreas and Lyla Stadtherr was fourth in 2:02.44 and the 400 meter relay team of Christensen, Andreas, Brooklyn Meyer and Mya Lindemann placed sixth with a time of 55.86.
Fleury added a second in the 300 meter hurdles (52.07), while Jayda Kolstoe was second in the shot put (35-1 1/2) and third in the discus (96-10), and Luetmer added a second in the 400 meter dash (1:05.11) where Stark was also fourth (1:07.24) and Makena Thoen was eighth (1:12.27).
In addition, Lindemann placed fourth in the 100 (13.31) and fifth in the 200 (28.07); Brooke Kolstoe was ninth in the 800 (2:54.36); Kiearra Wilmes was sixth in the 3200 meter run (13:49.31); Sophia Wallin was 10th in the 1600 (6:47.88); Luetmer was fourth (31-4), Ankeny seventh (30-3) and Alia Randt ninth (29-5 1/2) in the triple jump; Phemie Oeltjen was seventh (7-0) and Kendra Wilmes 10th (6-6) in the pole vault; and Brooke Kolstoe was tied for 10th in the high jump (4-6).
The Kuechle cousins helped EVW-Kimball dominate the girls meet, helping their team win eight of the 18 events with Litchfield winning five.
• In the boys competition, the 3200 meter relay team of James Ward, Zach Palmer, Nick Ankeny and Maeson Tank earned the lone title for the Lakers with a time of 9:11.01.
The Lakers also had two runner-up finishes as Jayce Kovarik was second in the pole vault (10-0) and the 800 meter relay team of Carter Meyer, Josh Hippe, Owen Meulebroeck and Kaiden Harvey was second with a time of 1:40.77.
Minnewaska Area also picked up points from its other two relay teams as the 400 meter team of Meyer, Hippe, Conner Stein and Harvey placed fifth in 49.11, and the 1600 meter relay team of Ankeny, Kovarik, Ward and Tank was fourth in 3:49.54.
The Lakers had a good night with the hurdles as Hunter Stadsvold was third in the 110 meter hurdles (19.1) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (46.67), and Meuelebroeck added a fourth in the 110 hurdles (19.8) and sixth in the 300’s (48.31).
In addition, Tank was third (2:04.32) and Ward fourth (2:26.93) in the 800 meter run; Ankeny was fourth (5:12.66) and Ian Mills 10th (5:38.85) in the 1600 meter run; Palmer was fourth (12:08.75) and Mills sixth (12:22.97) in the 3200 meter run; Meyer tied for sixth in the 100 meter dash (11.89); and Tristan O’Neil was seventh in the 200 (25.3).
Field events didn’t go as well for the Lakers as Ankeny was sixth (36-10) and Harvey ninth (35-4 1/2) in the triple jump, Ward was tied for 10th in the high jump (5-0), and Stein added a sixth in the pole vault (6-6).
Annandale won the meet with 120.5 points despite winning only four of the 18 events.
